Shoegaze is a genre I don't have a lot of experience with. I try to right this wrong by listening to a shoegaze playlist for an hour and then attempt to put together a shoegaze appropriate Afford-A-Board. Did I get close? should I revisit this concept in future afford-a-board videos?

tips: throw a fuzz at the end of the chain, play a bunch of rich jazzy chords, like sevenths, throw in some dissonant chord shapes here and there, bend the trem rhythmically as you strum and BAM you've successfully made what sleep deprivation sounds like

.......Dont forget making your double echo match, and I don't have a bowl cut. I use two reverbs variated, 3 echos and compression with wah screamer hits. Light distortion or only hits here and there as inflections. I play goth rock classic era, and this is something I excel at. Anything from U2 to Pink Floyd "pong" mastery helps. ~~~They are not shoegazer bands as Slowdive is a better example. They were examples of guitarists who like to play with "pong" echoing".

Hey Ryan, I love your spirit! Watching this video made me really happy! I'm teaching shoegaze styles on my channel and must say: You did it really well! I'm impressed how close you've been to the tone. Good work! Many viewers already recommended My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive. They are a perfect start to discover the genre. My Bloody Valentine represents the "fuzzy" and "vibrating" shoegaze style (in my opinion). Jazzmaster guitar with whammy bar + reverse reverb into some vintage fuzz into a Marshall Amp with a slighly overdriven clean signal. Perfect for playing Mayor 7 chords! Slowdive represents the "spacy" shoegaze style. Warmer guitar clean sound -> chorus (or phaser, flanger) -> long decay reverb (shimmer) -> delay (sometimes dual delay) ... but that's just one example. In the end it means: at least 70% wet reverb and long delays. :) It must be wet!!! I personally love Astrobrite and Ringo Deathstarr the most. Very fuzzy stuff using Fender jazzmaster or jaguar guitars! The clean signal should be very thin or middy. Try a short Gated Reverb into your favourite fuzz or overdrive and bend the whammy bar in the middle of your chords ...if you have one on you guitar. If you like you can add some chorus (tremolo, vibration ect.) and delay as well. Love your channel! Keep it up!

Kitchens of Distinction works for a more post-punk vibe with jazzy chords hidden in the spaced-out sounds. The guitarist uses TONS of delay and reverb. Picture Slowdive jamming with Police-era Andy Summers, and you're close.

Hey, I'm not an expert- but, back in 1989-1991 I was in a few bands that get called 'shoegaze"- and I still show up to concerts for bands that have been called 'shoegaze"- so just a few things I can add- as for playing, pick as gently as you can, virtually all of us were using pretty massive amounts of compression. Most of us were punk rockers who heard the Cocteau Twins, so we were still playing very, very basic progressions, just with tons of effects. This was the era of rack mount gear, so while the pedals were all over the floor- a lot more of the sound was made by digital rackmounts- I cannot count how many Alesis Quadraverbs I saw. That's the other thing- the Boss and EHX reverbs available at the time were terribly terribly noisy- so as often as not, it was actually 2 or 3 digital delays, set on relatively short repeats, with the aforementioned rack unit providing the actual reverb, along with the amp, if you had enough money for an amp with a decent reverb. As for drive- much has been made of the Big Muff, but I only knew of Kevin Shields having one- almost everyone was actually using a Heavy Metal distortion- either a Marshall, or Boss, and then, using neck pick ups to avoid the ice pick tone. So, for people now to try to get a "shoegaze" tone- just set it up the same as a "post rock' or "worship' board, and you should be about 90% of the way.
@LeeGHThomas
@LeeGHThomas 4 жыл бұрын
Matt Van Mantgem this is a good reply. Post-rock would be a good jumping off point and honestly IMO/YMMV the crowd wont realize the difference between a HM, a muff or a damn blue driver with the gain cranked. Maybe on a recording but you can get away with a lot of “cutting corners” live.
@mattvanmantgem8600
@mattvanmantgem8600 4 жыл бұрын
@@LeeGHThomas Thanks- yes- there's a semi-famous story of Ride playing Amsterdam with no effects at all- just unholy amounts of gain on their amps. With live sets- it's all about having hooks. You have a riff, or a vocal melody that's recognizable to the audience, and it almost doesn't matter at all how it gets delivered. Ever notice the popularity of "unplugged" sets in the 1990's? That's why. If the hook gets across, the exact instrument, or amplifier doesn't matter, much less the exact stompbox. Heck, most of Kevin's famous massive board only gets used for the 'holocaust' section of "You made me Realise" at MBV shows- in other words, it's literally "just for show".

Make more Shoegaze content. Tips: Flanger, pull the Spring Reverb. If you can find a reverse reverb, that’s how the MBV swells work. Don’t overthink the rhythmic end of things. Simple, droney is sort of the ideal. To get you to a different headspace. Overall: epic goodness considering how little you know about the genre. I’m super impressed.

@madmac66
@madmac66 4 жыл бұрын
gmscurto not a stupid question, ask away, that’s how we learn.....reverse verb is like a reverse delay where the tail is ‘cached’ and then played back in reverse after the set length of time - really cool effect. Gated verbs were used a lot in the 80s especially on drums (Phil Collins in the air tonight). Bands like MBV used them a lot on gtr too to cool effect. The verb is ‘gated’ after a set amount of time, that is a noise gate is slammed shut, thus ending the effect abruptly

Like you, I had not been into shoegaze at its "moment" but the reemergence of Ride not too long ago caught my ear and I began my dive into the genre to catch up with the past, so to speak. Yo man, Ive been into this genre for about a decade so I can try to give my two cents. First of all I would suggest putting the fuzz or whatever distortion afer the reverb. To kind of get that signature airy sound you want to use a plate reverb with the decay turned all the way up so the sound trails. Another signature sound is the reverse reverb. Unfortunately there arent many cheap pedals you can find with the feature, i think i saw a chinese one for like 50 or 60 bucks once. Using reverse reverb in concert with a jazzmaster whammy bar is what really gives you that trippy bendy sound. Look up how kevin sheilds plays to give yourself a better idea of how to do it, it honestly sounds great. Though i havnt done it myself because i dont have a second reverb pedal, i reckon that throwing a plate reverb after the the reverse would sound amazing as well. I know that bands like showdive, which i believe you were listening to as I recognized some of the pictures on your tablet also use several delay pedals near the end of their boards. And from my own experience, there seems to be several schools of thought on shoegaze. My bloody valentine and the horrors both utalize that bendy reverse reverb whammy bar sound. Bands like slowdive still have the bendy sound but kind of round it out with more spacy delay effects. Bands like cocteau twins or the meeting places use what i think are reverb combos to gain an airy trailing sound. Check out the youtube channel pedal partners or the shoegazer channel if youre interested in the music and sound. Also more recently there have been pedals made that cater almost exclusively to shoegazers like the loomer, so there is a lot of interesting equiptment on the market that can really make your sound rad. Also, if you want to emulate the sound well, i think a common shoegaze trope is heavy distortion with tons of effects during a heavy chorus, but then during the verse theres often a really clean sound, i think most will just use an overdrive. You see it happens in songs like when you sleep by my bloody valentine and wavvy gravvy by flying colours. Anyway, you were sounding pretty good man, i hope you dove a bit deeper into the shoegaze rabbit hole. Theres a lot of really awesome stuff to uncover.

Pity Sex and Whirr are epic shoegaze bands. The Adventures is a shoe gaze band that was made up of the lead singer and guitarist as well as the bassist from Code Orange. The fuzz plus detune-modulation into reverb into dirt plus more reverb, chopped up into reverse delay is, in fact, St. Kevin Shields' magic potion, at least in the most basic terms, so I have to admit you nailed the "shoegaze" thing on the head! FWIW, the term "shoegaze" came about because the guitarists were always looking down- at their pedals- while playing, stacking boxes upon boxes to sonic glory and/or annihilation, haha...

Yea you were pretty spot on gearwise, but your approach at this could use some work. Here's a few tips that helped me. -Chose your chords to emphasize your pedals instead of choosing your pedals to emphasize your chords. -You should learn de "melted/glide guitar" technique. It's to shoegaze what the pentatonic scale is to blues rock. -One goal you should try to achieve is to make it so that it's difficult to perceive your strumming. Bass and drums in shoegaze are really rhythmic but the guitars often have a "blurred" quality to them That being said, I can't stress enough how well you did for someone who knew nothing about the genre. A lot of your first instincts (jazzmaster guitar, reverb after drive, a lot of drive) were absolutely correct!

@@textnumbers22 Nah, I was there in the Thames valley scene when it all broke. Loop, Slowdive, Chapterhouse, Lush... It was a scene spawned from trading old records, tapes and following a select few reviewers in Melody Maker and NME. VU, the nuggets comp albums, stooges, 13th floor elevators etc (I remember I was considered a bit passe for obsessively collecting Sonic Youth back catalogue stuff, everyone liked it but it wasn't cool)

Nice Job Ryan !! Check out the Digitech Stereo Reverb RV-7 on the reverse setting paired up and a Pro Co Rat or Big Muff and analog tape delay, ( I use my old Danecho ) and the BOSS TR-2 in a light setting. A good Fender or Vox amp with a good reverb tank to support the RV-7 while in reverse.You don't need a huge board to get that lush Kevin Shields sound btw- I have that same Squier Jazzmaster in Sonic Green, one of the best purchases I have made in the last 5 years. Keep up the great work !!

Oh man, thanks for this video. I'm a bassplayer, using quite a similar kind of board, using mainly cheap pedals. I'm still in doubt wether to name my ambient droning stuff bassgaze or shoebass... Anyway, you absorbed the genre quite quick, kudos for that.

You can get more of the swirly fuzzy reverb if you can get a reverse reverb and put a big muff fuzz after the reverb

I think you in fact did gaze at the shoe my friend! In my opinion that was some solid riffage. very 90’s, 10/10. Matter of fact is that certain aspects of shoe gaze have become a bit more mainstream so those ambient overdriven tones can be used on a whole bunch of stuff. definitely one of my favorite affoardaboards.

Great sounds, as always. For my money, the Digiverb is the best reverse/gated reverb in a pedal format, stick that in front of a distortion or fuzz, into your favourite modulation, into a digital delay. Glide into your chords with the vibrato and you're all set

The secret to contemporary shoegaze is to tune down, tune some strings down even more, play weird shapes on the low strings. Thick walls of fuzz, overlayed with wobbly reverb-soaked high drones and emotional vocals. Play the unwound strings open or fret a note and let it sustain.

Great idea for a pedalboard-building theme with the "afford-a-boards"! I must admit I was shocked that you were unfamiliar with the Shoegaze genre- this has probably been posted dozens of times already, but a good, quintessential shoegaze album that serves as a good starting point, My Bloody Valentine's opus "Loveless" is an absolute must-listen... perhaps this is one of those "maybe some bands I like are actually Shoegaze and I didn't know it" things you mentioned early on, ha ha…

Excellent video! Love the experimentation! The tones sound great! Try something a little down tempo, a little more drone-y, almost depressive. One of my favorite songs to play around on with long reverb tails is ‘How Does It Feel’ by Citizen. Those tones with what you have now would be perfect! Keep up the excellent work!

For making shoegaze, I typically put my dirt after reverb if I want a noisy My Bloody Valentine style tone. For something more chill (Slowdive, Lush, etc.) I keep the chain more or less traditional, aside from stacking reverbs
