Shoei Personal Fitting System - Full Process Explained - Get the right fit!

Shoei has just launched their P.F.S. or Personal Fitting System in the UK, and I went along to the first event, held at Bikestop in Stevenage. The PFS is a highly technical method of ensuring you get the perfect fit for your Shoei Helmet. It's the same system used by professional racers from MotoGP, the Isle of Man TT, BSB etc. You too can now get this sophisticated offering via a network of premium Shoei retailers, so I took the opportunity to go through the whole process with Chris from Shoei UK to show you exactly what's involved, and what the results are. A massive thanks to Chris and Martin for allowing me to hijack the launch event to bring you this video.

Brilliant idea and very simple, with decent helmets costing £400 and above it’s a shame all manufacturers don’t do the same, especially as it is probably the most important bit of kit we buy. Well done Tony another good un.

Shoei is already offering this service in France. They adjusted the foam of my GT air 2 last year. It’s a big improvement in comfort and silence!

Great video Tony 👍🏻 I was amazed by the PFS. Having had an Arai pro fit which was lots of back and forth, bit here, new problem here, bit there, etc. The PFS was right first time! Unbelievable! I went with the x-spr pro which didn’t fit at all stock, literally 4 pads and boom. I’m a shoei convert!

A difficult product to demonstrate in the sense of how it feels at the end, but it was obvious that it was a better fit at the end than the beginning. A great service. I think they would do well at the ABR with this service.

I got the neotec 2 last year, find the wind noise slightly louder than my previous neotec 1, now the 3 is out, I'd definitely have this fitting service if available. 👍

Exciting. I'm in Louisiana. I have a very large head. Currently I have an HJC I90 5XL with a 4XL liner. My jaw width and cheek width are likely larger than 5, maybe 6XL. My cranium fits fairly well in the 4XL liner. I'm a Goomba-headed American. I look forward to this PFS system.

I also have a big coconut and was limited to HJC helmets until the new series Schuberths were released. They fit me great.

Good watch, first-time viewer! If you are prepared to pay best part of a grand for custom proper fitting leathers then i dont think an extra £50 for a custom fitting helmet is much to pay at all!

No Worries, the computer shows which pads are required where dependant on the measurements. They are rolling it out across 10 dealers around the UK. So far only Bikestop, The Biker Company in Cheltenham and Moto Legends in Guildford have been announced.

I purchased a Neotec 2 awhile ago and felt it was too small. It hurt within 15 minutes and I couldn’t put on my glasses. My previous helmet was a Neotec that fit comfortably but the salesman said it was too large and I needed to go down one size. I returned to the store and bought a thinner crown piece that gave me more room. The helmet is now comfortable to wear for hours. I may buy thinner cheek pads however. At the price of this helmet, $699 USD, shouldn’t some custom fitting be included in that price? I paid $50 for the crown piece. Replacement cheek pads are another $55 USD.

I imagine many retailers will ‘throw in’ the PFS service when you buy the helmet, but that’s down to them. It is essentially a separate service though

My helmet made my jaw hurt after about 45 minutes, to the point I'd have to pull over and take the helmet off for a bit. Ended up just cutting open the cheek pads to trim the foam down and sew it back together. Looks crap but doesn't hurt anymore

Very interesting, I struggle to find helmets that fit the top of my head, my cheeks and my chin consistently well. Shoei and Arai happen to be the best fit most of the time, would be really interesting to see if i could get a perfect fit this way!

Would be worth investigating, whilst I was there in the shop a guy with an unusual shaped head came in. He’d had lots of problems getting a helmet to fit properly and although it was a tough one, Chris managed to get a Neotec 3 to fit perfectly.

@Geshmaal Haha, no he looked quite normal, but ‘unusual’ in terms of getting a helmet to fit. He had a round head, but quite a flat crown.

I'm rather sceptical folks. 4 different measurement points offers two sizes and one of which is clearly uncomfortably small; what am I missing? I wear 3 different Arai helmets but a Neotec 2 was simply too tight against my forehead. Bought a Schubert C5 in a Large, Medium in everything else, and bought the long oval conversion lining. It's not an Arai but is a flip front that doesn't give me a headache. Thanks Tony.

It suggested two sizes, which as Chris said they’ll always try two sizes anyway. The measurement doesn’t take into account things like your cheek and jawline, so although a smaller helmet might fit snugly on the skull, if you have fat cheeks (like me) or a more protruding jaw for example, that would make it less comfortable. I’m the opposite it seems, a couple of Arais fit me, Shoei is normally very good as is Nexx and Nolan, but despite many attempts I just can’t get a Schuberth to fit me.

Sounds great, I had a right faff getting a helmet to fit my apparently humongous head. Curious though... I've always been told helmets will loosen up so should feel tight to start with. Is that because of how much we compress the liners each time? I'm wondering.... If we get a perfect fit helmet, will it loosen up too much or be spot on for ever as liners not getting too compressed?

Chris said you’ll get a maximum of 10% bedding in. If the helmet is too tight to start with that’s not going to be comfortable. The perfect fit is snug and allows for a small element of bedding in

It’s a £50 charge for the service, either for a new helmet or an existing one.

The tool and the PFS system give you a starting point very close to the final fit.

I think it offers a lot, it means you start with a better idea of what’s going on rather than just asking the person ‘how does that feel. You should already be a starting position close to where you need to be, then it’s just a bit of tweaking. It’s the helmet I was buying, so to be able to get it fitted was a bonus. I could have worn it in the size off the shelf, but once having it fitted I realised how much better it was.

It's a regular service now the staff have all been trained. You just need to make an appointment.

Not always, but I want to use this helmet to replace my RYD as my main ‘camera’ helmet and a flip doesn’t work for that

They are only available through the PFS system, don’t think you can buy them separately.

Seems like measuring and guessing, but this is far better than the experiences I have had. Helmets never fit me. I would be so happy to have this service.

@@mancavemoto Guessing might have been a bad description, but it seemed like too much variance is left in the calculation. I'm aware you could have the pads reduced in the medium helmet to fit better, but I assumed that the system they are implementing would tell you EXACTLY what you needed. Like, you punch in the measurements, and it tells you that you need "these" helmets in "these" sizes with "these" specific pads in "these" places. Instead, it suggested "Medium OR Large" with X pads. Just seems less like a science, and more like an educated guess. Either way, it looks like a step in the right direction.

Anyone know the list of store/dealers that offer this? checked on the Shoei website and they are all in mainland Europe with no results showing in UK (scotland ideally). Recently bought a HJC on sale and it is my first helmet so not entirely sure on how its supposed to fit haha so having this kinda service would be hugely beneficial for my next proper helmet that i plan to spend quite a bit of money on and will also get used alot more as i will prob end up buying a bike during that time.

I’d recommend a hand wash at 30 degrees, although if you do use the washer, be sure to use a laundry bag to put the liner in.

I tried all the helmets in the world and non of them fits as they should. We will see how the PFS system will handle the challenge of my head shape.

I’ve fitted over 300 heads using this system and haven’t been defeated yet. There’s been some very unusual heads in that mix. PFS Day at Biker company Cheltenham this Saturday if you fancy a fit?

If it's an event it will most likely be the Shoei Technician, but the staff will all receive the full training programme.

@@mengaw-yong2490 as Chris mentions in the video, when a helmet liner beds in, it at most will be by no more than 10%, so that is allowed for when fitting.

This is more tailored than just changing the skull liner. Subtle changes to make sure there’s an even contact point all around the head

My shoei x zero helmet is the right size for me measured around the circumfrance of top part of my skull ,but gives me headaches and puts preasure on the front part of my head so i changed to AGV now no problems same size helmet. Ah yes and AGV do M/L sizes which also helps.

But as you would notice from the video, when Chris measured the circumference of my head, he went lower at the back. As he said the circumference is only part of the fitting requirements

The PFS system accounts for the shape and size of your head as explained at the start of the video. Circumference only doesn’t account for shape. I would suggest you need to lift the helmet to relieve that pressure but might need to compensate elsewhere in the helmet.

i am ml 57 58 agv size, unfortunately there are no shoie stores in Serbia, i ordered the hornet adv in large because my friend told me they are more snug. do buyers that wear ml in agv usually go for a L in shoei ? i know it ibjective and size of the head. but curious

I can’t speak for others and it’s always difficult comparing sizes per brand as they have different head forms. I have a size Large Hornet, but also fit an M/L in an AGV K6

I've been buying Shoei crash helmets for 30 years and always pick up a Large from the shelf. No fitting service or computers involved and they've always fitted just fine.

It covered my chin, but not my beard! In terms of the skull fit though it wasn’t too bad. It doesn’t take account of your cheeks, jawline etc. if you have fat cheeks like mine then the smaller of the two sizes suggested might not work out.

@mancavemoto your head circumference was 60cm so I'm surprised that you could even get the Medium on! I'm not criticising PFS, but I'm curious as I have been doing this myself over the years as these pads have been on sale fir a long time.

That’s just what a good helmet shops do, the Arai helmets have layered pads that you can take a couple of mm away a time

Really? This is the first time for a tailored service for the average consumer. What other helmet manufacturer or shop offers this pray? At best some shops offered a swap around of cheek pads etc but this is proper tailoring.

@@nikoscosmos every Arai Tech Pro and Premium Dealer, I can’t post pictures here but if you know anybody with an Arai helmet pull out the cheek pad and then pull back the sweat fabric and you’ll see that the cheek pad has layers. The skull caps come in a number of sizes.

Not quite normal, as no other system will suggest the required pads and placement, based on the measurements. Arai do the same, but its more trial and error, it just takes longer going back and forth with different pads and locations 👍

It gave two possible options, the larger size was better and all that was needed from the computer model was to switch one front pad, which was my preference. Hardly guesswork. 👍
