Portuguese person here. The "splitting up" of the world is absolutely historically accurate. And yes, it's profoundly arrogant(although that's not how it's framed in history class)
@Daniean4 күн бұрын
Yes, the Portuguese and Spanish actions in dividing up the world were indeed horrible. However, it's important to note that the English were not much better in this regard. They weren't opposed to the concept of dividing up the world; rather, they wanted a piece of it for themselves. Many European powers of the time engaged in colonial expansion and exploitation. While Portugal and Spain were early leaders in this due to the Treaty of Tordesillas, other nations like England, France, and the Netherlands soon followed suit, each seeking to establish their own global empires.
@thiagohayashi99364 күн бұрын
I (Brazilian) would say that sounds "arrogant" for today's eyes. But Portugal and Spain were the big guns in the room of the time. So, yes, it's arrogant, but also greatly justified when you have this level of power around the world.

Spain and Portugal were the World powers of the time. The Treaty of Tordesillas was signed 100 years before Shogun is set and ratified by Pope Julius II*. Spliting up the world by longitude and latitude on one side of the line Everything new and undiscovered belonged to Spain and the other to Portugal. They were the first real mass colonising nations from Europe and basically laid the groundwork for the Dutch, French and British in the following 400-500 years.

It's also the reason why they speak Portuguese in Brazil and Spanish in the rest of South America. Due to its shape Brazil is the only South American country that falls into the Portuguese half of the world.

@RainTreasure4 күн бұрын
I’m a Japanese a fan of your channel. Anjin‘s explanation about the treaty was accurate historically. Christianity was sorts of soft weapon at that era to invade other countries. Taiko Hideyoshi Toyotomi saw it’s intention of both nations and banned the missionaries activities nationwide, so did the following Shogun afterwards. That saved the integrity of Japan and its culture for the long time before WWII.

The high lords have wives, but they can also have consorts to have more children. They usually stay with the wives, like the heir's mother was consort to the Taiko. Also some of these families are closely related due to arranged marriages.

Anna Sawai, the actress that plays Mariko is 32 years old. That's a thing with East Asian people, especially women. For our, western standards, they tend to look a lot younger then they do. In a similar way, we (white people) tend to think black people are older, then they really are.

@@williambranch4283 I'm sorry, again that is ahistorical. De-colonisation is the process of increasing the degree to which a state is independent from the influence of its colonisers. De-colonisation began in earnest in the post-WW2 years and went deep into the cold war years. Much of Western Africa, for example, is still under heavy French influence. European colonisation, sans the American variant, is still far from over even today.

The main characters in Shōgun are based on real people. Blackthorne, Mariko, Toranaga, and Yabushige, all have historical counterparts. The original 1980 miniseries by the same name, Shōgun, a well as this current one, was based on the novel by James Clavell published in 1975 (and well worth the read).

Great show. I think in this period of Japanese history, they were not much open to western countries. They were very much split about the religious presence. Some Japanese converted, others were very suspicious. Japan did benefit however from allowing the Portuguese to do some trading there.

Japan was a mystery back then. Portugal found it first and began sharing knowledge (and religion) with the Japanese people. That's why there are Christian priests and lords among the Japanese. And that's why Toranaga did not even know about England's existence or the rest of the world. They were converted and told that Portugal was the only civilized country.

With how filthy the water was in London at that time, it is no small wonder people worried about getting sick from bathing too much. They really had no concept of clean sources of water being safer like in Japan. I'm guessing your history lessons focused more on Mediterranean and Middle East history because it was more relevant to your past. Where U.S. teaches more about the colonization periods because it was a colony.

Sorry, USA and European are usually centered around their countries. But MOST countries study the WORLD history beyond their own country during middle and high school. At least here in Brasil and other latin american countries. We start with the first civilizations, then we go to egypt, greece, rome, china, the mezo americans, the african kingdoms, then medieval europe and the rest of history from europe's perpective, but also seing it from other personectives, like Asia, America and Africa before the europeans invaded them. And then we study the Great Navigation era, and from there we keep with the european perspective. That on WORLD history, besides our own country history (wich in our case, starts with the European invasion).

The Battle of Sekigahara the major war that the finale was leading up to would be INSANE to see on screen, I also really want to see Toranaga’s ascendancy. I never understand people who compare this getting another season to the shit pool known as game of thrones seasons 7-8. This is not even close to the same situation at all we have actual history to go off of and pull from
