OK, check this out....the leader of Japan was a guy named Goroda (in real life his name was Oda Nobunaga,) and he was a murderous beast. He held no official title, but simply ruled by virtue of terrifying literally everyone. We saw him in that scene where he is chopping people's heads off and Toranaga Yoshi (Tokugawa Ieyasu) is holding Akechi Jensai (Akechi Mitsuhide) back. Goroda was the father of Ochiba no Kata (Yodo-Dono in real life.) Someone convinced Akechi that Goroda was going to kill him, so Akechi rebels. The same person who told Akechi that Goroda was going to kill him, also told him where and when he could ambush Goroda successfully, which he did, killing his guards and forcing Goroda to commit suicide. The person that gave all this information to Akechi was Toranaga...becuase he wanted Goroda dead, and viewed the Akechi clan as expendable. As a way of soothing his own conscience, Toranaga arranges for the youngest daughter of Akechi, Akechi "Maria" Mariko (Akechi "Gracia" Tama in real life,) to be married to Toda "Buntaro" Hirokatsu (Hosokawa Tadaoki,) the son of his most trusted general and advisor, Toda Hiromatsu (Hosokawa Fujitaka,) which protects her from being executed with the rest of her family. Goroda's top general, Nakamura Yaechiyo (Toyotomi Hideoyoshi,) captured Akechi and his rebels and wiped out the entire clan. He then went to war to unite all the daimyos under his leadership, and took the title of Taiko (which means Tycoon, but was a thing that meant like, "elder statesman," or something to that effect.) He was born a commoner and could not ascend to the rank of Shogun, but he was acknowledged by all as the rightful leader of Japan, and ruled more or less effectively. Toranaga fought a short battle against the Taiko, since the point of getting Akechi to kill Goroda was so that Toranaga could make a move to become Shogun. Realizing that he didn't have the forces required to fight off Nakamura, he joined him instead, putting his plans on hold until Nakamura appointed the council of regents and died shortly thereafter. As an interesting historical sidenote, the African samurai Yasuke served as a page to Oda Nobunaga himself (it was Oda that had him freed and made him a samurai,) and was one of the members of Oda's retinue when he was ambushed by the Akechi clan. He went on to survive, and join the fight against the Akechi clan before then disappearing from the historical record. The "Yasuke," anime show depicts Yasuke serving as Oda's second when he commits seppuku, which is, at very least, in the realm of possibility. Given that the show features robots and shape changers and magic and shit, I'd take it with a grain of salt, but it is possible.
