After watching several reviewers completely miss the mark on this episode, storyline, and the characters, it's so refreshing to see reviewers who actually understand what's going on. Rather than just crapping on the series, characters and writing because a character you loved ended up dying, you two are seeing beyond the surface to understand the brilliance of the writing and acting.

its bad writing. how can you like Toranaga after that. are we not suppose to be routing for him?. not isoida. to use your son's death and make your best friend die in shame and abandonment so he can live and gain the crown. your not a likeable character! and dude talking about 4d chess and lvls etc however if you have to sacrifice everything to reign over ruins what's the point?! so no idea what his 7D chess move. all its's seam to done is derail a lot of people from this story!

Toranaga is thinking on behalf of all of Japan. It's bigger than his friendships, his son, his family as a whole. Sacrifices have to be made.

@@benwarwick4290 1. It seems you lack deep understanding of Japanese culture. 2. Toronaga told Hiromatsu "then die by my side in Osaka", which meant: Please stick to me, stick to my vision and go along" If you don't it is your own fate to choose. It is you alone choosing Seppuku, it is you alone." Toronaga already made up his mind, so Hiromatsu had to make up his own as a free man. 3. Toronaga as the Leader could not yield in front of his Generals, because he is the Leader, he is the one at the top, the one achiever, the one in command. When the Generals uprisen in protest, Hiromatsu understood what needed to be done: step in and set aside the Generals from the argument so he could make it on his own. 4. Duty & Loyalty have great depth in Japanese society. 5. "If you look and see nothing, then look harder"

I have been watching reaction videos from various youtubers. It is unfortunate that sometimes there are people who only understand the scene between Toranaga and Hiromatsu on the surface and consider Toranaga ruthless and stupid, but I am glad as a Japanese that you two understand it so well. To Toranaga, Hiromatsu is like a limb cut off by frostbite. It is a great blow, but a necessary sacrifice to keep alive something more important.

It even goes further than that I believe. Hiromatsu understood that the consequenses would be worse if he didnt do what he did. This meeting might have escaladed to the point where Toronaga's plan would've gotten out. Hiromatsu saw this. They would've had to fight a lost battle and face a sure death for all.
@user-kd9mu9vn2g
@user-kd9mu9vn2g Ай бұрын
@@youpvanligten5788 I agree completely. Toranaga and Hiromatsu's lines in the seppuku scene were the opposite of what they really meant. Hiromatsu thought this was not a futile death, and Toranaga was trying to avoid Hiromatsu's death. Even Toranaga's Eightfold Fence, which is more robust than anyone else's, could not fool only Hiromatsu. That is why I cried when Toranaga finally showed his true feelings to Mariko with his voice trembling and tears in his eyes. At first glance it looks like Toranaga did something cold and cruel, but it was really Hiromatsu who was cruel. He knew that Toranaga could not refuse his offer, and he himself said that he would commit seppuku. Just as Toranaga's spies are everywhere, so are Ishido's. And the letter he was reading just before Lady Ochiba visited Ishido was probably from a spy. Hiromatsu understood Toranaga's heart better than anyone else and chose to make sure the hidden plan was secure. In exchange for Hiromatsu's life, Toranaga's plan became solid. If Toranaga became Shogun as a result, then Hiromatsu's goal would be accomplished. I think this is expressed in Gin and Kiku in episode 8. I thought these women were intentionally staged as a mirror of Toranaga and Hiromatsu.

After rewatching episode 8 for a second time, I think that I better understand what happened in the pivotal scene were Hiromatsu committed seppuku. I first thought that the seppuku was planned in advance. However, now it now seems to me that it was NOT pre-arranged for Hiromatsu to commit seppuku to sell the ruse. I think that was a brilliant improvisation by Hiromatsu after he saw that the other vassals were confronting Toranaga about going to Osaka as being a ploy. To save the situation, Hiromatsu came up with the brilliant idea in the heat of the moment of committing seppuku to crush any doubt that going to Osaka was genuine and not a ploy. When Toranaga tries to persuade Hiromatsu not to comit seppuku, he says to Hiromatsu: "Then die by my side at Osaka." There is genuine feeling in Toranaga's eyes and his manner seems to indicate that he is pleading with Hiromatsu not to do this ultimate act of sacrifice which Hiromatsu has just proposed. Hiromatsu then replies: "You are throwing away all that we have fought for." I think that this is Hiromatsu's coded way of telling Toranaga that there is no choice, but for him to die in order to save the secret plan from unravelling (all that they they have fought for) and to convince any spies that there is no secret ploy and that Toranaga is actually surrendering. Toranaga then looks over at the dissenting vassals (who might be spies), and sees that Hiromatsu is correct--there is no other way but for this tragic sacrifice to be made by Hiromatsu. Wow. Very powerful stuff.

Toranaga didn't want his son or his friend to die. But he suspected Yabu was a spy, and didn't know how many others were spies. Hiromatsu mistakenly gave the ploy away when he told Yabu that Toranaga was not going to surrender. He realized too late what the plan was, and by commiting seppuku reversed his mistake by solidifying Toranagas surrender to the spy Yabu. Great episode.

Great point at 30:05 by rekkai , Toranaga did say this isn’t just about preservation of a few but the entire of Japan. He’s thinking about the entire realm and knows the dark days it’s been through under the former former Taiko (Ochiba’s tyrant father who was killed by mariko’s dather Jinsai) throughout the entire show Toranaga has referenced keeping the realm safe like Rhaeneyra in HOTDS1 when daemon called for war. Both heads of their clan knew full well what it really means for all out chaotic war but they are thinking of the many, instead of the few. Not easy to do but the highest man at the top is the most loneliest as the Taiko in ep2 said.

Even during his first battle, he was not happy with that victory because of the raw brutality he witnessed and had to commit in order to maintain peace. If his son and best friend have to die in order to avoid an all out massacre THAT THEY WOULD MORE THAN LIKELY LOSE, so be it.

Now his banner-man can act on their own without putting the rest at risk, they can plan an attack or do something else and Ishido will just assume that they are acting at freewill (since most of Toronaga's council are disagreeing with him and even committing sepukku) . Toronaga knew this would happen without saying a word. Also hiromatsu is a G he knew what to do, he set himself as an example of going out with honor after going against his lord (Harakiri), because he sensed that toronaga's generals could rebel, but now they can't because that would be dishonorable (honor means everything). I've seen reactions where ppl just called the writing bad or just trashed the show after hiromatsu died, but i realized that when watching the show you have to chose between being "the falcon that takes the bait and gets captured, or you fly high and see beyond the lure that was thrown at you" loved the reaction btw y'all are great 😁

I feel like you two actually understand the deeper meaning and subtleties of each episode that others seem to miss and your conversations afterward always draw me in. I feel like it may be difficult for a lot of westerners to understand the culture and tradition of Japan, especially ancient Japan. Being part Japanese myself growing up in the States, I even have difficulty with it at times. There's a reason why Tokugawa (whom Toranaga is based) had a reigning and (mostly) peaceful 250+ year dynasty. All the pieces had to be put in place for success. Anyway, thank you again, Looking forward to the next episode!

I don't think Hiromatsu was refering to Mariko when speaking with Buntaro. It was more about setting feelings aside and trusting your Lord when it "appears " he is defeated. That's when Buntaro looked at Toronago and things clicked. Hiromatsu also asked the same of Fujii. Fuji was also denied.

I really felt this episode with both you guys and really enjoyed you both anticipating the long game even though the plan is not visible. In chess, often strategic players don’t mind long grueling end-games a lot more than tactical players who prefer to attack more in the middle-game than to defend or maneuver. I will really miss Hiromatsu’s voice and wisdom. I agree he has to coolest voice and cadence.

@Syntell & @Rekkai Question for you guys: Given your superb analysis & analogy of the protagonists with the Chess game, how would you rank MARIKO? She's obviously not a grand master like Toronaga moving the pieces, setting the stage & with the grand vision, but she's moving along next to him in every step of the plot, and now is her time to execute a master stroke. What are your thoughts? Cheers

there are "reviewers" who only pay attention to the entertainment. Just the surface. You 2 brothers pay attention. Actual attention and are able to see the big picture. this series, novel has always been about strategy and Toranaga is the master. Even if it takes the sacrifice of his loved ones, he is willing to do whatever it takes to look out for his people and country. not personal conquest.

..the Sengoku Jidai period of Japan produced the most capable military and political leaders in their time. Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Takeda Shingen, and Tokugawa Ieayasu...the last man standing..Tokugawa who is the RL Toranaga. Ieayasu was not as brilliant a general as the others, but he was a master politician strategist in the context of their culture. For people who say the original Shogun series was better, it is for a westerner, but the new series is more in line with actual Japanese perspective.

Yabushige is pretty predictable, the reason why he didnt protest is simply because he needs to look loyal, he knew Toranaga wary of him because of his connection with Ishido, so at the very least he will keep put a loyal face with Toranaga.

In the official episode podcast, the producer said the other lords were ready to pull their swords to commit seppuku but Hiromatsu stepped up to do it in their stead. Toranaga never meant for Hiromatsu to die, but Hiromatsu did it to keep up the act.
@alcor4670

@@Syntell A small detail: the generals - like Hiromatsu - only had their wakizashi under their belts. Even if they chose to start a coup -- which was very highly unlikely -- they would easily be outnumbered and cut down by those guys sitting along the walls (who held their bosses' katanas). No, they were most likely going to commit seppuku themselves. Knowing how old he was (as he mentioned back in Ep. 1 iirc), Hiromatsu knew Toranaga would have a better chance at Osaka if he didn't lose these three. He saw this, and saved them by doing it himself in their place. And since spies were most likely watching the whole thing he most likely hammed it up for their benefit, making sure that they'd report back to Osaka that Toranaga was indeed broken. Probably the only honest things he said to Toranaga during that performance was him saying goodbye, and him saying sorry.

This script may seem like fiction, but it cannot be considered fiction. This is because the model for 'Toranaga,' Tokugawa Ieyasu, actually ordered his own son to commit 'seppuku' as a demonstration of loyalty to 'Nobunaga.'

Are we to assume there is a spy in Toranaga’s ranks?? Is that who this sacrificial demonstration is meant to convince? I don’t understand why Toranaga states it was meant to sway Yabushige to turn on him, when at the end of the episode, he has Mariko inform Yabushige of his plans anyway!!! If he fills Yabushige in on the secret plan, then why go thru the ruse in the first place? For a spy ?? And if it’s for a spy, then why state to Mariko it’s for Yabushige? lol. Just confused on that part

as far as i understood. Toranga needs everyone to believe he's given up, sick and unable and in morning. they need to see his allies given up hope. as there all well known for being hot-headed. hence the wearing armour at the funeral and dude from the first ep. once word spreads that his followers have given up hope, it help sells the illusion. whatever his plan is, doing this to your friends and family is the quickest way to get backstabbed! so no idea what his 7D chess move. all its's seam to done is derail a lot of people from this story!

At around episode 5 I started to question Toronaga’s decisions. He’s like his birds soaring all alone high in the sky. This man has trust issues and I can understand that because in the end we are all alone. But your son is dead, your best friend is dead, who will this victory be for when everyone around you is dead? Who will you celebrate this victory with? Lord Hiromatsu was your right hand man and most loyal how could you let him go out like that!?

Toranaga is lonely. He lost his son, lost his loyal retainer and old friend Hiromatsu, and still he has to achieve it. It is to protect the motherland from foreign enemies who are planning to divide and rule Japan. That's why he has to be heartless.
