I’m not surprised. Maybe we get the Sekigahara battle after all. A prequel could work too. Money talks. As long as the quality doesn’t drop off, this could be good news for us. Justin and Rachel did such a great job it’s no surprise the network wants more.

I would love to see another season of quality TV like Shogun. But I’m a bit wary because we won’t have Mariko, Yabu, or Fuji, three of the best characters and actors in the series

From a quick look, I realized that FX has never won the Emmy from Drama Series (it's won a few times for Limited Series)... Shogun feels like the surest shot it's had if it gets in the Drama category...

The smart move would be to adapt the actual history of Toranaga as he actually becomes the shogun. But seeing it through a samurai or peasant perspective could be fun. There are a ton of different angles they could explore. As long as the quality doesn’t drop off like several other series that went rogue.

I thought the whole idea was to keep it as a limited series? Having read the book, I understood that’s where these character’s stories end. But on the other hand, I would actually love to see them continue the show based on the real life inspirations for the characters. There’s definitely plenty of ways that the show’s plot could continue.

We need a multiverse. Right before Yabushige gets seppuku’d, Ke Huy Quan comes blasting in from a portal stating he needs both of them. They go to the future to find present-day Maria and recruit her. Blackthorne sees all this from behind a tree and follows them. The ending has a major CGI battle, where Maria finally adopts her original name Mariko. She is about to be killed by the horde of ogres, when a missile flies through a small portal, killing the bad guy, and then we see F-35’s fly in. They decimate the enemy army. Through a portal we see a Japanese man in a suit walk through. He says he’s the first Japanese-American President. Mariko-Sama: “Father.” end season

events after Sekigahara battle was even more interesting. Toyotomi Hideyoshi's son Hideyori ( the heir ) was degraded to an ordinary daimyo, not shogun. Tokugawa Ieyasu, who was appointed as a shogun in 1603 and established the Tokugawa shogunate, attacked Osaka Castle twice in 1614 and 1615 (Siege of Osaka), forcing Yodo-dono ( Lady Ochiba ), Hideyoshi's concubine, and Hideyori, Hideyoshi's heir, to commit suicide and destroying the Toyotomi clan. They have established the world, characters in the first season. If they make season 2, Lady Ochiba and The Heir's character will become even more important with more screen time.

A cash grab implies quick and minimal effort to make more money. Sanada seems very passionate about the show, and the team that worked on it did a wonderful job. There is reason to believe that moving past the source material they could still create an awesome show. If they are able to continue the series and it’s great, is it just a cash grab? People here are being too quick to judge. Also, businesses are in it to make money. Every piece of media is created with the intent of generating revenue. Movies and shows wouldn’t exist in the scale they do now if that wasn’t the case.

We Won! And Sanada gets more work/a better $ deal! I know people are gonna complain "But the book is done!?" Yes the book is done. But Toranaga is based off of Tokugawa Ieyasu and there is plenty of real story to draw from. Blackthorn was a real person too.

I dunno man. There is a small chance they could make something good out of a second season but experience says it’s a bad idea to try to carry on once the narrative material is exhausted. Way more often than not, they end up discrediting the original with the follow up. They made the same mistake with Top of the Lake for example and to some extent with True Detective. I would be more on board with it if they made a follow on series of another book with completely different cast and characters. Shogun was so excellent that I really hope they leave it be.
