The names seem to be different, but this sounds like the story of William Adams. A British sailor who was ship wrecked on Japan in 1600. He lived the rest of his life there.

Yes, the novel was based on the real-life of William Adams- An English sailor and shipbuilder who became indispensable to the Shogun, who made him a high-ranking Samurai in the end. What is Surprising is that I've heard through a Japanese woman expert on the period(On KZfaqI), that his real experiences were much more exciting(There are extensive notes on the period and personal ones) than even the novel Shogun and I do not understand why Clavell changed anything really, probably so that he could make it shorter

@@Rowlph8888 I totally agree with everything you said. For a more 'modern' version of Adams you should look into Thomas Blake Glover, a Scotsman who moved to Japan and basically modernised the whole country. The reason the Japanese drive on the left like Britain is due to this man. He brought modern ports, engineering, a modern navy and railroads to Japan. It was also the Brits due to him that took curry to Japan through the Royal Navy

This is based off the James Clavell novels. It was also made into a TV miniseries in 1980 starring Richard Chamberlain. There are six books in his series, which he wrote from 1966 to 1995.

I got to work as background for this show as one of the Samurai. My first job in film. I was part of it from Jan-Jun in Vancouver, Canada and nearby cities. They built a replica fishing village and it was so amazing to see with all the actors hanging about. Felt like I had time travelled. It was an amazing experience. Hopefully I can see myself and none of my scenes are cut.

I vaguely remember watching this way back in the mid-80s. Local channel aired this back to back with Tales of the Gold Monkey, that much I remember. It aired on loop for at least half a year and kid me wondered why there weren't any new episodes not understanding it was a mini-series lol

Nice seeing the actor who played Scorpion in the Mortal Kombat film as well as in the last John Wick film and The Last Samurai. He was also in Avengers: Endgame.

I liked the miniseries Shogun from 1980 with Richard Chamberlain and Toshiro Mifune, and I am excited for this too! Based on the James Clavell's 1975 novel of the same name. P.S. and Clavell took part in 1980 miniseries too...

They weren't occupied by English at all. She takes off her cross as there was a tiny percentage of Japanese at this time who were Christian and it was a massive struggle for them to be so. I forgot to say the reason some Japanese were Christian was due to the Portuguese traders, again not the English. This story from the book is loosely based on William Adams a Brit who went to Japan and rose up the ranks of Japanese society

So excited for the series comes out! It’s historical fiction loosely based with name changes of actual people/events. Japan was visited by the Jesuits/Spanish first. This is about the first English Privateer to land in Japan.

It's historical fiction inspired by real events. All the names have been changed. The character Torunaga replaces the real shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu. You can see his army display the actual Tokugawa family crest. Blackthorn plays the role of William Adams, the first englishman to reach Japan, became a samurai and given the name Miura Anjin. He sailed in service to the Tokugawa Shogunate, died in 1620 at the age of 55.

From 1 January 1501 till 31 December 1600 is sixteenth century, from 1 January 1601 is seventeenth century... If you knew just a little bit of history then you knew Japan was never a colony or ocupied by any nation.Japanes was the one who ocupied regions, but in that period of time till 1800 Japan was an isolationalist state. In 1494, Spain and Portugal signed the Treaty of Tordesillas, which divided the newly discovered territories between them based on a decision by Pope Alexander VI in 1493. The treaty established a maritime border 480 kilometers west of the Cape Verde Islands, assigning the lands to the west to Spain and those to the east to Portugal, along the meridian of 46 degrees west.Spain, consisting of the kingdoms of Castile and Aragon, officially ratified the treaty on July 2, 1494, while Portugal followed suit on September 5, 1494. The Treaty of Zaragoza, signed on April 22, 1529, marked the finalization of the division of the world. So,because of this treaty Japan was supose to be a portuguese colony. In 1541, Portuguese ships arrived in Japan with military personell, Catholic priests and traders on board, but they did not establish a colony. Despite some evidence suggesting they considered or tried to colonize Japan by converting the locals to Christianity and eventually sending troops to govern the country, they ultimately abandoned this plan. This decision was influenced by the formidable military strength of the Daimyō in Japan during that period, which deterred the Portuguese from pursuing a colonization strategy similar to what the Spanish did in Latin America and the Philippines.Leave the history for someone who know it, and just resume to reactions.

I have the Paperback. Easily one of my favorite books, one of the best things Clavell wrote. Sure beats King Rat... Oh well, they can't ALL be winners... :)

So she commented on a white guy being in a Asian movie I wonder if she questions Asian people being white movies or is racism against white people just normal to her?

You shouldn't take what she says to seriously she obviously historicly illiterate (occupied by the English e.t.c.) and has been indoctrinated like most people her age to assume everything white/western is bad. Perhaps she will read the novel and get a better understanding but i doupt it.
