Based on James Clavell’s novel, FX’s Shōgun is set in Japan in the year 1600 at the dawn of a century-defining civil war. The story I heard was that a drunk spanish captain pretty much bragged about how they pillaged the south americas by first converting the common people to catholicism and then going after the rulers and take it over... but the japanese listened and swore it would never happen to them. So here comes Adams (Blackthorne in the series) who is a protestant! They just want to trade, not convert. So naturally Tokugawa (Toranaga in the series) make him his advisor on European matters.

@@cuffzter The Captain in this show is British and protestant and not trying to convert. This was always the problem of Portugal and Spain, hence why all their countries are utter shite. Their Empires are site. Brits always allowed the locals to live and be who they are, hence why the British EMpire was the best

there is a wildly intense tv series done in the 1980's it was the first "adult-tv" action/drama show I watch with my father. It had honor and family as major tenets, that being said the show introduced in me a longtime appreciation for dramatic storytelling on a grand scale - excited to see the trailers at least look like they got it right

The plot is a historical fiction based upon the end of the Sengoku period of civil wars which culminated with the epic battle of Sekigahara, and the exploits of William Adams, (the first Englishman to reach Japan), portrayed in the series as John Blackthorne

6:55 Europeans started showing up in the 1500s, by 1600 there was a war between Catholic and Protestant kingdoms. This war got exported overseas, but different Japanese lords/factions exploited the European factions that arrived for civil wars internal to Japan
