Shohei Ohtani's English speech at BBWAA dinner as he accepts AL MVP award｜MLB｜Angels｜Dodgers｜野球｜大谷翔平

Shohei Ohtani accepted his 2023 American League Most Valuable Player award on Saturday at the Baseball Writer's Association of America (BBWAA) dinner in New York City.
Speaking in English, the Japanese two-way star thanked the Los Angeles Angels, the only team he had ever played for after arriving in North America, for supporting him throughout the start of his career in Major League Baseball.
Ohtani left the Angels for the crosstown Dodgers this offseason after signing a record $700-million free agent contract.
A rare MLB player who pitches and hits, Ohtani went 10-5 with a 3.14 ERA and 167 strikeouts in 23 starts on the mound for the Angels in 2023.
He also hit .304 with 44 home runs and 95 runs batted in at the plate.

Wow! Well done, Shohei! Great speech in English! You can tell Shohei really loved playing for the Angels and appreciate his time with his former teammates and staff. I can also tell he really wanted to stay, but winning comes first.

Shohei is loyal and appreciative of the Angels and I'm sure he would have went back if they would have offered the same money. It is much more rewarding to sticking with a single team and win it there instead of jumping ship to an already stacked team. The irony is I could totally see the Angels winning it all.... That's baseball for you. @@JorgeP3911

Public speaking is tough public speaking in a different tongue is much more challenging. I’m sure the dude speaks better English around folks he’s comfortable with.

I knew he took ESL in Japan. All Asians🙋🏻‍♂️🙋🏻‍♂️🙋🏻‍♂️ took ESL😂😂😂 at one point in their life. On the reals... much respect. Not only does he focus on Baseball 24/7 but he even made time to learn the language so he communicate with western fan base. That really does show how much he cares about the game & fans

If the US media wasn't awful then I'm sure he would, but your media has a reputation around the world which is why foreign players prefer to use interpreters so their words aren't twisted to create narratives.

If he can remove his too much nasal accent, his speech would sound much more profound. And in fact, now, Ippei-san is more like his English teacher and speech writer than his interpreter. Though Shohei uses him very effectively … where he needs precision, he relies on Ippei, while he has to show his humanity he speaks with his own words. Like we sometimes rely on one’s lawyer to comment formally. Not just as a baseball player, a very bright man by nature or by nurture !

His accent sounds mix of Japanese and Chinese? Not typical of either, not easily understandable, but much better than the last time I heard him speak in English.

日本語には、英語、中国語、韓国語など他の国には無い発音が多数存在しています。実は、アメリカは、敗戦国日本の英語教育方針を決定しようとしていました。 その上で日本人のIQを調査したところ、英語教育の決定の直前、アメリカの上層部が驚愕するデータをGHQが提出した事から始まりました。  日本人全体の平均学力調査において、日本は他国のどんな国とも比べてみたところ異常に「識字率」が高く100％に近い数字をたたき出してしまい、世界一だと言う事を知ってしまったのです。 そして自分達より圧倒的に早く暗算ができる数学力を持っていたのです。これは身分関係無く300年以上前から同じでした。 この結果に驚愕し脅威を覚えたアメリカ上層部は 日本人が英語を話せるようになることで自分達を圧倒する知識と知能を身につけついにはアメリカが乗っ取られるのでは、 という危機感まで感じ始めたのです。 (実際には、日本人は、日系アメリカ人のアメリカ本土やハワイでの差別的で悲惨な状況を把握していましたし、戦前に「バテレン追放令」と言う日本人の5万人が奴隷として東南アジア欧州に運ばれ売られていた事や神社や寺が破壊されてしまい鎖国したという悲惨な経験や、その東南アジアへの移民が植民地奴隷化し悲惨で苦痛な思いをしている状況からそんな事を考える人は誰一人としてありませんでした。) 話を戻すと、そこでGHQの上層部は「日本での英語公用語化」を中止し 日本人に英語を話せる力をつけさせない英語学習の方法を日本に提案しました。  そして戦後の日本で採用された英語教育方針が「文法訳読方式」という 文法理解と目標言語を母国語に訳す活動を重視した教授法で、英会話をさせないと言う方法でした。  そういう事で、日本人はコミュニケーション能力重視の立場から批判を受けてはいるものの未だに依然としてこのGHQ政策やGHQ教育ケースが採用されています。  こういう未だにGHQ政策の英語教育が続いている日本で、他国には無い発音がいくつも存在している事を考えたら、英会話をする上で日本語なまりを修正出来ずに話せるわけがないのです。 日本人が英語を上手く話せないのは、こんな単純な理由だったのです。  大谷選手は、アメリカで生活する上でこれからどんどん英会話が出来る様になると思います。どうか、暖かい目で見守ってあげて下さい。お願い致します。長文失礼致します🙏💭💗
