Thank you for the videos Bjorn. I started learning in depth Bonsai techniques and practices just recently. I have purchased a few simple starters (Windswept Juniper, Schefflera, willow and I have maple seeds of all sorts germinating. What books do you recommend for really learning pruning?

For someone who is doing bonsai and bonsai vlog here in the Philippines, It is always an inspiration watching your video, as you generously explain the details of what you do. Your mastery of the material that you are using is very impressive explaining things like the origin of the materials even the plants growth as the season change, what to avoid so the material wont stop growing. But what i find most impressive is the hope you put to the growth of your tree and what it would look like in the years to come after wiring them. "Not making an S shape but odd contorted movement" I wish to have my very own shimpaku and train them with your videos as guide,.. Hope you will be in the country by 2021, it would be nice to see you in person and watch you work on a bonsai tree.

So, was listening to a podcast the other day and well, you said you were the only one basically caring for your garden and all that. If you ever want your 1st apprentice, im definitly not far away. (In a way im joking lol but also, it will likely never happen lol but would be the greatest opportunity for me ever!...especially being so close!) Spring is coming up fast here in TN and me and my son are going to join the NBS this year finally. He loves bonsai already and I love that. Loved the video btw and it wasnt even till about a year ago that I was interested in junipers and even pines. For the longest, in my opinion, they were soooo over used in the bonsai world and just seen to many that always looked the same in ways. Honestly ive been a part of Mirai Live (with Ryan Niel) for close to 1.5yrs and in that time I found myself being really drawn to pines especially and in the past few months, junipers. Videos like this, although ive seen this b4 lol, are great for someone in my position as ill probably never have access to great material but can make my own essentially. Looking forward to seeing part 2 and all the other videos. My son says hello and again is saying when we come visit the garden (in due time) he has to see that juniper...the RMJ behind you. He loves that one which is odd cuz he normally gravitates towards the winter silhouette of deciduous. Anyway thanks for your time reading this. Ill be glad when all the rain is over here!

Bjorn, in the video you added single wires to each trunk but, I notice that after you wired the branches and came back, the trunk was double wired, at least at the base. Did you double-wire the entire trunk and main branch? It would have been nice to see that also.

Awesome Video Bjorn! I actually have about 20 Itoigawa cuttings myself that I was planning on doing this exact technique on but could never find an article or video on how to do it properly, so thanks a ton! I just recently wired some 2-3 year old broad-leaf evergreens and some deciduous trees for my own bonsai channel you can find those videos by searching “Seedling Wiring Workshop”!

Oh I also forget to mention that I show a neat trick for finding the correct size of wire for wiring trees in the videos I uploaded, however, the quality is really low do to bad lighting on part 1 and part 2, part 3 is ok and you can kinda see it on part 4(the last tree I did)

Thanks for this & all your incredibly helpful Bonsai videos!! I did my first attempt at wiring last winter on a Juniper (Nana I think) & killed a couple of the main branches. The wire cut into them a fair bit & I thought I must have twisted & bent them too much, causing the wire to tighten. Seeing you go to work on this Shimpaku has me scratching my head about what I did wrong - any thoughts? 🤔

By last winter you mean a year ago? Wire is meant to be left in place only the time it takes to set the branch (some months but it depends on the species). Branches grow and it’s normal for the wire (which doesn’t expand) to bite into the wood if not removed promptly. I don’t know if I understood your problem correctly but I hope this helps. Cheers.

@@pansepot1490 Thanks for your reply Pat. I don't think I left the wire on too long, but maybe. I noticed the branches had died about 2-3 months after wiring. I removed the wire in case other parts of the tree were damaged so the wire was only on there for about 3 months I would say. The foliage had turned brown & dry. One of the branches was the main trunk (it was becoming a semi-cascade style tree) but interestingly, it was only one section of the trunk (& the same on one or two other branches) which died. The rest of the tree was & is still doing fine (as far as I'm able to tell in my inexperience). I'm now doing some structural pruning to reduce some over growth on one side of the tree & also to try to figure out how to style it now I've lost my apex & general idea I had this time last year.

Question I live in Philadelphia and during the winters which can be very cold. How do you recommend I store my bonsai's in the winter. No shed or colds rooms. Just a yard, I had a shimpaku and I thought if I planted the pot in a larger pot it would survive but nope. can you give me some tips or advice on keeping my plants alive during the winter.

If you want to make a shohin size pine tree try Austrian black pine , it's basically a European twin of Japanese black pine behaves the same way. Generally Scots pine are not used for shohin bonsai or atleast I haven't seen one. Hope it helps
