Another thing to appreciate about this track is that it was released in 1970...These guys are the OG founders of heavy metal AND grunge....No one was doing this at the time

I was there in the 70s, and it was never considered grunge.it was first and greatest heavy metal band ever.

@dmead4106 It wasn't considered grunge because grunge didn't exist until the late 80's 🙄 ....They were also not considered heavy metal either. They created a new sound that planted a seed in the darkest corner of the pop culture garden. In the mid/late 70s heavy metal flowers started to sprout. And a little later on, grunge flowers started to sprout in the late 80s Hope this analogy was able to help your struggle wrapping your mind around my original post. Let me know if you need further clarification

Geezer Butler (bassist) was an absolutely brilliant songwriter. The lyrics are about the depths of depression. This is a special song to me because it was played at the funeral of one of my high school friends who ended his own life in the 11th grade. I'm 61 now and was just a little girl when they burst on the scene, but I'm completely drenched in their music since I grew up listening to whatever my older sister was playing. Geezer was a slap bassist, and I think that's what you're referring to. In War Pigs, he really lays down some insane flying finger gymnastics. Enjoy your trip down the rabbit hole of BS.

The Godfathers of Heavy Metal. Ozzy Osbourne was the lead vocalist for 10 or so years then he went on to a successful solo career. "Black Sabbath" was a horror movie from the early 60's.That's where they got their name. One of the members said "Is'nt it funny that people pay to watch a scary movie, why don't we make scary music "War Pigs" "Black Sabbath" "Changes" "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" "Never Say Die"

Sabbath has been my go to all time favorite band for forty some odd years, and if your looking for everything in one song, than go no further then "Hand of Doom/Rat Salad"; by far the pinnacle of all Sabbath songs IMHO.

Black Sabbath will do this to you…I discovered Black Sabbath for myself after already listening to Ozzy Osbourne solo records and heard Paranoid for the first time on AM radio in the mid-late 1980’s. I knew it was Ozzy right away though Black Sabbath had a completely different sound from solo Ozzy. It is 2023 and I still can’t get enough of Black Sabbath:)

Its actually a dubbed in poor quality solo in the middle. Thats the way the album version was produced in 1969. Just 1guitarist, the infamous tony iommi. My favourite song by them is probably hand of doom or symptom of the universe which was a pre cursor to thrash metal a decade before metallica dropped

The truth is they needed a last song for the album and threw this together with thrown together lyrics. Turned out to be so bad ass that it became the title track for the album. I'm pretty sure you'll love every song on the album. Iron Man is a freaking riot and kind of a standard on par with this and War Pigs. Hand of Doom is tough and nasty, Fairies Wear Boots is hilarious, and Planet Caravan is just a wild trip set to a cool jazz groove. They are all hits, even Rat Salad which is a drum/guitar jam with no lyrics

I'm so glad you discovered this song, but I'm also glad it wasn't your FIRST Black Sabbath song! It's a great song, and definitely their most famous one, but not so representative of their sound. I hear you started out with "War pigs", I hear: excellent! That's a very good starting point, now you could move on to anywhere you like on the Black Sabbath trail and not be confused. Great that you appreciated the lyrics! Geezer Butler is not only one of THE most influential bassists ever (that groove, man! That groove!!), but also one of the most poignant lyricists in popular music history. Without a doubt. As you're probably aware, original Black Sabbath singer Ozzy Osbourne is also a legend in his own right, so I definitely recommend that you also check out A) his solo material, and B) the material that Black Sabbath have done with their other singers through history. They have released albums with five singers altogether, the other four being Ronnie James Dio (another LEGEND in his own right), Ian Gillan (another LEGEND in his own right), Glenn Hughes (another LEGEND in his own right) and, last but not least, Tony Martin. Unlike the others, Martin has not achieved major fame from his other works besides Black Sabbath, but the five albums he made with the band are bona fide cult classics and illustrations of his superlative talents as a singer, multi-instrumentalist and lyricist. Not so much in the US, where Black Sabbath sadly faded into obscurity from the early 80s, but overseas, definitely, and his reputation happily just keeps on growing. All these different singers brought something of their very own to Black Sabbath, making their respective eras less than cherished by many Ozzy purists, but for those who simply appreciate top tier heavy metal, there is not one album released under the Black Sabbath monicker that does not deliver.

Hey Shon, I'm dropping off another suggestion, if interested. George Benson - On Broadway (Live)" (channel: George Benson) --George Benson is an American singer and songwriter. He began his professional career at the age of 19 as jazz a guitarist. He was a former child prodigy; Benson first came to prominence in the 60's singing soul and jazz music with some very prominent and well-established jazz bands. He then, launched a very successful solo career. He alternated between jazz, soul and R&B often and touched a large audience of loving fans... and here's another suggestion for another song by BS, if interested. "Black Sabbath - Changes" (channel: Black Sabbath) --This song is from their "Vol. 4" album released in 1972 the music was composed by (guitarist) Tony Lommi and the lyrics were penned by (bassist) Geezer Butler.
