I like how the creators of the matrix first had a more complicated and in-depth story but the production team and backers said that the public is too stupid and would not understand so they changed the matrix. The humans are not batteries but are instead a neural net that helped with processing. This processing also ended up being the backbone for the matrix its self. This is why when one of the humans became woke they could manipulate the system. Like a dream, the matrix is a symptom of the processing and not the cause. The battery idea is kinda a front even in the story and is there to make the dumb people happy but the truth is told in the story later on when neo talks to the architects from halo and destiny.

If you want reasoning's and don't mind reading the other stuff then read the next comment. TL:DR: The human brain is energy efficient aka a power saver cpu. The math problems that the robots have them solve result in the matrix as the human's brains view those number crunches as a world. We also don't know if the robots have them do it every second of the day or just a little. Next, it seems the robots have a system cloud saves thing that saves the worlds and lets them edit things. So even if they aren't using humans to do math they can still live in that dream world.
