Once again, and without request, the video you didn't ask for, but now with corrected audio. Now to correct the speaker's speaking tics...

Thanks for making me go through my safe and actually think about which ones I think are heirlooms. To me they are ones passed down.

Welcome. Lemme know what stands out to you. If I did this right, you might change how I think about it too.

Personally I don't like heirloom anything. I don't like to put emotional value on items because things can be lost, stolen, broken, or sold. I have been gifted things, and I treasure them, but they become more like display items than a daily use. Plastic guns can also be repaired with the use of resins and epoxies as they can be treated much like when fixing wood furniture (shave off some plastic from one side of the gun or from plastic stock of similar color and mix in with the adhesive as you apply to the void) In some regards, they can be repaired more easily than metal where welds require a confident amount of skill to be able to add material without spreading too much heat. That said, I get the appeal of metal guns.

Thanks for the comments. I like to think of stuff as stuff. Basically everything is a tool to serve a purpose, and can be gotten rid of if that purpose is no longer served, or if the cost of keeping it exceeds the value of the purpose. That said, I think things can be valuable tools to remind us of things and people we value. My family moved a lot and doesn't have nearly any heirlooms. Even the family pictures were destroyed in a fire. So I feel what's missing. I also write wills for people and see the burden that a lot of old stuff can create, and the sadness that old people feel when their valuables aren't actually valuable to their loved ones. I figure that there's something to both perspectives, and that a bit of intentionality can give the best of both mindsets. I did say that metal guns had properties which lent themselves better to repair and longevity. The implication was that it is possible to repair plastic, but not necessarily as easy or as good. I've repaired and modified numerous plastic items, and certainly would do plastic welding or other techniques to fix a damaged gun or preserved 'grandfathered' functionality during restrictive times. I've kept plastic 10/22 magazines, which I would consider to be worthless as a magazine during the AWB, on the off chance I could work out a way to repair or improve them into a functional magazine during times when only 10 shot mags could be purchased. I've also helped a person relocate pin holes in a 80% glock which were a little mis drilled. There's nearly always a way, if the motivation is sufficient.

I have 2. The Smith and Wesson 586 6 inch gun I bought when my daughter was born. The Winchester.22 semiautomatic that belonged to my granddad, obviously. I think it’s a model 90.?.? Does that sound right? I remember him shooting crows with it when I was little. I miss that man...everyday!

Googling the model 90 comes out as a pump action. So far you are the first person to actually respond to the question asked. Did you get the 586 to commemorate your daughter's birth?

GunFun ZS yes, she was about a year old before I could afford it. Let me check my safe...it’s a model190. I stand corrected! I need to take your words to heart and shoot the thing way more often! Thanks for rekindling fond memories ZS!

GunFun ZS I do plan on it, at some point in time, but I’m not sure she can handle it. She’s got a daughter too, now. I want them both to have it when I’m gone. Now my son, he’s a different story. Not really interested in guns as much as comics and superhero collectibles. He could be rich someday.

p.s. Situations like your son are part of why I set up gun trusts for more than just NFA items. The trust can hold the guns, etc. for your grandchildren and skip your son, etc. It helps when someone either isn't a gun person, or maybe isn't allowed to be a gun person. Generation skipping is a nice feature that trusts can have.

Zs do you cast buckshot?
@GunFunZS

Not yet. The time payout isn't in it until I have the automated casting machine. I like loads such as 22 pellets of #4 buck. Based on what other people manage, that would average about 2.5 pours plus sprue trimming time to yield a single shell of buck. Do you?
