I've got loads of 620 cameras gathering dust... I thought they were useless, but it's not that hard to get them up and running!
PLEASE NOTE - there’s a pretty big mistake in this video!! 620 film was NOT discontinued in 1955… they were still making it until 1995! I have no idea how I messed that up so bad! Sorry…
This is the first of a series if videos featuring local businesses. I'll be visiting people in my local area of South Gloucestershire, popping in saying hi, taking a look around their business and taking some photos of them in their natural environment! It's an idea I had which will give me some interesting people and places to shoot, and gets me out and doing something positive for the area where I live... hopefully. If I can get the photos right.
So, 620 film. I had been ignoring my 620 cameras on the basis you can't get film for them any more. But first I discovered that the Film Photography Project (filmphotograph...) have started re-rolling Kodak films and you can buy them from places like Analogue Wonderland (analoguewonder...) here in the UK.
You pay a premium for them, of course, because FPP have to be making some money from it somehow, but they deliver to you four ready-rolled 620 films. It actually turned out to be a good way to both get my hands on some 620 spools because I didn't have any, and let me dip my toe in the water of 620 without taking on the seemingly impossible task of re-rolling 120 onto 620 myself.
You see, 620 film and 120 film are identical. The backing paper, the film itself, same size, everything. The only difference is the spools. They're different shapes, and more often than not, a 620 camera won't take a 120 spool. Some do, so it's always worth a try. But in most they won't fit.
As you'll see in the vid, first shoot was a disaster. My fault. I only had four rolls to work with, so I decided not to film test the cameras before the shoot, or I would have only had two rolls to work with.
Big mistake. Total write off. Waste of my time and the subjects. Lesson learned!
The subject for this shoot was the lovely Sue from Trashman Treasures (www.trashmancl...). She and her family run a house clearance business in Gloucestershire, clearing houses and rescuing anything that could be of use to someone. They don't want to throw anything away if they can avoid it. Which is great.
Sue was very patient... allowed me to come back a second time and do the shoot again, after the first one was a disaster. Big thanks to Sue!
I fixed the cameras, they worked second time, lessons learned etc etc.
What do you think of the photos? That Brownie Flash B is actually really good! What amazing photos.
More coming up, I'll do a vid explaining the re-rolling at some point. It really is pretty easy, I was very surprised!

A good sport indeed! She's quite interested in photography herself, so I think she was more accommodating than someone else might have been. Lesson learned on my end... test properly before heading out on a shoot. As if I didn't already know that. Oops. Thank you, and more coming!

There are som really nice cameras from that era around. And the 620s get overlooked so often because of the difficulty of getting, or re-rolling, film for them. But these two cameras that I shot with are really high quality cameras. Definitely ones to try. Never tried a vigilante, but a quick google suggests that you can pick them up super cheap also.

Absolutely charming video, and good on Sue for being such a sport! Something about this really got a fire in me to start working on some older cameras. 120 has never been very accessible for me, and I've spent a lot of time over the last 6 months falling in love with photography and learning how to do repairs on old 35mm cameras like the Electro35. There is this certain charm to taking a moment in time on such a high resolution film and having it frozen forever. My dad is getting on a little bit and has some old 620 format cameras on a shelf in his house that he picked up from an op shop 30 years ago or so, just a little while before I was born, and just tonight we looked over them together and he offered to let me fix them up and give them a go! I'd love to make some memories and experiment with such a fascinating part of our history as a species. I truly hope that film remains as special to us as people as it is to me as an individual.

Thank you for your kind words, I'm glad you found the video inspiring in some way! The older cameras always seem daunting, but in fact the older it gets, the less complex it is! Especially with the box cameras, even the shutter mechanism in those is crazy basic! As always with any camera, there are certain elements where if you want pictures in focus etc., you need to be accurate, but if you've been working on 35mm cameras like the Electro 35, either of these two cameras that I used here will be a piece of cake! Worth reading through some of the comments on this video, if you haven't already, as always the viewers collectively have so much more wisdom than I'll ever have! For the 620 cameras, it seems that the easiest way to use them is possible using a 120 film on the supply side and a 620 spool on the take up side. Then once you've developed your 620, get the spool back and do the process again. Any reason why you find 120 inaccessible? There's a whole world of cameras out there, often lovely old and simple cameras, that take 120 film and produce spectacular results. I think, I hope, that film has enough of a following to keep it going. There are several suppliers that have committed long term to producing film, and while there are film suppliers, and usable cameras, and of course people who are passionate about the art, then there will always be film photography for us to enjoy!

@@the120ist thank you for getting back to me! To be a bit more clear, I found 120 a little less accessible because I was under the impression my only options were ever going to be Yashica or Minolta more modern medium format bodies, or TLRs. I don't have much disposable income (good choice picking film, me) so the cameras I've seen around are prohibitively expensive. But the realisation that older bellows style, or perhaps box cameras might be something I can find in a quiet corner somewhere for a handful of dollars made me realise there will always be an option for me! I'm quite patient so I have no problem really committing to a shot!

My Six-20 E Brownie is a little more complex with two pull tabs. One for a 3-6 foot closeup, and the second is a yellow filter. I haven't shot it yet, but I think I'll give it a go this week.

Interesting, I haven't tried one of those. I'll keep an eye out for one. I did a video about a Box Tengor a while back, and that had quite a few more options than this one, but I wasn't that impressed. For all its simplicity, I did get some nice images from this camera. Good luck with the Six-20 E, hope you get some good results!

Um, 620 wasn't discontinued in 1955 (that was Verichrome, replaced by Verichrome Pan); I used to buy it regularly into the 1970s (and stopped only because I no longer had a 620 camera). 620 was produced by Kodak until *1995,* and came back as a specialty item (respooled) almost immediately from suppliers like B&H and Film Photography Project; now you can get new Shanghai GP3 100 in 620 (never touched a 120 spool). Given only the spool differs, I'm mildly surprised either Kodak or Ilford hasn't brought it back in recognition of the number of excellent cameras (Kodak Reflex and Reflex II, Medallist and Medalist II, and others like that Vollenda) that used 620. After all, all that's needed is new spools (which have been proven to work in plastic) and a minor adaptation of a rolling machine. BTW, many 620 cameras (more than half of Brownie Hawkeye Flash examples, likely that Brownie Flash B, and my Kodak Reflex II) will accept a 120 roll with the spool flanges clipped down to the surface of the backing as a supply, as long as you take up onto a genuine 620 spool. This makes it much easier to go out with your 620 cameras, especially if you've acquired a supply of the old, durable metal 620 spools. And tsk! The Vollenda was made by the *German* branch of Kodak (the first Vollendas were sold under the Nagel name), so of course they have the focus scale in meters.

Hmmmmm.... where in the hell did i get 1955?? I've actually just gone back through my search history to find out where I got that info from, and even the pages I visited while I was researching all say 1995... So I can only think I must have just misread it. Damn, that's annoying. Thank you for letting me know. I'll add something to the video description. And the German branch of Kodak... yes, you're right, my info was not quite there again, but at least I wasn't 40 years out this time?! The point I was sort of making still stands though, which was that my big mistake (of a growing list), was assuming that a Kodak camera would be US-made and therefore have imperial measurements. Another mistake, certainly one I won't make that one again! Interestingly I've just done a search for 620 films and there are new ones coming up that I didn't see before, namely Ilford films, but still re-rolled by FPP. As you say, I'm sure it can't be long before some of these guys do what Shanghai are doing and roll onto 620 films straight out of the factory. Thank you for the info, apologies for the mistakes!

You could have become suspicious when looking at the closest distance number. I always do with a “new” camera to find out if red is meters or feet and white is….. 1 must be meters, because no old fixed lens went as close as 1 foot.

@the120ist 2 жыл бұрын
That would have been an opportunity for me to spot the mistake yes. Another opportunity would just have been paying more attention! Not making assumptions, not being cocky, taking more time. There were many opportunities for me to avoid the mistakes. But I like to focus straight ahead, like a horse with blinkers, and try not to look too closely at opportunities to avoid looking like an idiot on youtube....

I use a couple of 620 cameras. I've been cutting down the outer rim of 120 films with toenail clippers. It works a treat, no need to respool.
@the120ist
@the120ist 2 жыл бұрын
Interesting, so is it just the diameter of the spool ends that is the issue? I thought maybe the thickness and overall length? Might try the clippers method... definitely quicker and easier than re-rolling!

@@the120ist I always use a proper 620 spool as the uptake spool and have not had any incidents like jamming. The length of the 120 spool is fine, it fits okay.

@@garychatfield6709 That could be a really good workaround actually, just using the 620 as the take up. Didn't think of that. Would save all the tedious hand rolling! Will have to see if the 120s fit in the supply slot.

I saw the comment from Gary Chatfield about trimming the spool ends. May I add, a good many 620 cameras can accept a 120 roll in the supply side without modification. They will require a 620 take up spool of course. So give it a try, it just might work and save some inconvenience.
