Shooting in Monochrome, black and white photograpy. Do you ever switch your camera's image preview screen to black and white? A lot of people do this. Some people ask "why would you want to do that?" But the thing is - shooting in monochrome actually helps you understand how to think about light, how to see light, and how to use the tools that you have, the tools that are given to you.
What is the difference between shooting and editing in monochrome vs. color? How does color affect our perception of reality? Shooting in monochrome forces you to study the light and shape your images around that light.
In this weeks video, we take a look at shooting in monochrome and losing the visual distraction of colour. Can it improve our photography? Well the basic answer is yes.
Hope you enjoy the video and if you do remember to hit the like button. If you are currently not a subscriber, please consider subscribing.

Dear Gary, you are a really top Photographer. Your Videos and especially your Photos are great. Years ago, I have been in Scotland, Edinburgh of course, but else Fort William and Maillag with the steam locomotive. When I see your photos, I am remembering my holidays. Best wishes for 2022 from Munich, Germany.

Gary, I just discovered your channel and have to say I am enjoying it. I’ve only watched a few videos so far but I’ll be rewinding to watch all previous. I’m taking particular inspiration because my wife and I (we’re in the US) will be spending this summer in the UK as we did 2019. At that time we visited the Scottish Highlands and fell in love. Keep up the good work.

I have no idea why your videos haven't shown up for me lately. I went looking for you this morning and I'm so glad I found this. There are sometimes that B&W is the perfect choice. Now I need to investigate how my camera might show me a monotone preview. -Elaine

Hi Gary. I love the monochrome look. On the pentax o shoot with I can not only preview in black and white but I can add filters and see the difference on screen. I love the infared and red filters. They really punch the textures and contrast. But if I want a softer look then the yellow is enough. It's worth noting also that it's not perfect black and white as the sensors are colour models in most cameras. You can get specific versions of cameras but they aren't cheap. So what we have does a good job for what we need. The other alternative is of course film but thats another learning curve for some. I used to shoot it daily and bought film in bulk. Remember those days? I miss it but a couldn't go back now I'm just to comfortable with digital. Great video Gary and gorgeous images. My kinda images. See you next time.

Thanks for this! I often edit photos in B&W because I do like how it can express a different feeling and highlight different parts of a scene than color does (where color can be distracting). But, I've not tried setting my camera up to preview in B&W, which would make the analysis of the scene's textures and contrast real time instead of trying to force it in post. I'll have to figure out how to set this up on my camera (Sony A7III)!

I hope its easy to find within the Sony menu, although I'm sure it will be. Many thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed it😁👍

On my A7r2 and A6400 you cannot do this, at least I can’t find a way as this comes under; “Picture Effect” and only works when shooting JPEGs only, it wont work with either RAW or RAW + JPEGs. Not sure re A7III, if it has the new Sony menus of the current Sony cameras. It does Work on my Leica Q2. Old Sony menus always been a pain in the past. Hope your A7III has the newer menu versions. Another great video Gary, thanks for sharing.
@fretless05
@fretless05 2 жыл бұрын
@@GaryMcIntyrePhotographer Sadly, it is not... nothing is with Sony's menu system. The only way I can find to get the screen to show monochrome is to switch the output to monochrome. I'm not sure that's a big loss since the color data wouldn't be needed anyway.

Excennt video Gary - not something that would immediately spring to mind with landscape, but as you have shown, there are some great moody shots to be had. It is also nice to know that by shooting in RAW you also get to do a colour version if required

I took a bunch of musician photos back in the day on B&W film. Since it was available light I did a lot of fast film and push processed. Great images but very grainy. Do you have any techniques to soften or remove the grain without softening the image?

While watching the video a thought came to my mind. Would you be able to determine the colors that offer more brightness that I would want to expose for?
@GaryMcIntyrePhotographer
@GaryMcIntyrePhotographer 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching Curt. I normally try to expose for best overall contrast,but the brighter colours in a scene to expose for would be within the yellows with tints on either side of that into the yellow/orange and yellow/green. Hope that helps a bit👍

Can I suggest you try film? Your skill level deserves a try. Additionally you won't have to deal with unneeded trash data leaving your film plane full of printable data. I have several digital cameras but limit their use to color.
