A video to inspire you to shoot with multiple exposures on your Nikon DSLR or Nikon mirrorless.
I demo the menu setup on the Nikon D750, D4 and Z6 - but it is very much the same for all Nikon cameras.

Another great video from Frederik, such a natural teacher. ☺ Digital makes this such an obtainable technique, compared to back in the days of film. I believe the ‘Gain’ function you touched on, keeps the camera from overexposing or creating odd artifacts, in the final image. I can’t explain myself well these days. 🙄 You touched on an important element in a Photography, and that is doing it in the camera, if possible. I liked the one that you liked with the tree tops and sky, such a cool effect! And the single flower, with the other background; classic example and a good one, of what the traditional multiple exposures were all about! I kinda liked the shot of the bird, but I’m glad you included that because multiple exposures done on moving subjects, under controlled circumstances, can produce awesome results. I will check out your new video you did on the lens soon, Frederik. Take care! Best, Geo 👍👍👍👍👍✌🏻🇩🇰🇺🇸

I have an old D200 for experimenting multiple exposures. A really neat feature that wasn't fully utilized when it came out. And the best part, no wasted film expense!

Agreed! With my keeper ratio when shooting multiple exposures, it would be a very expensive experience to shoot with film!

Nice video! Question: how to show the menu of the D750 in your video? HDMI cable to computer and then record? What software do I need?
@frederikboving

I have the solution Recorder 3G UltraStuido from Blackmagic designs. I think HDMI is protected to mitigate copying of movies so you need more than a cable. I use the SW that came with the cable.

Hi Jose, nothing specific for D750. I can make a video if you'd like? Are we talking very long exposures (10 seconds or more) or more ICM like (say 1/10th of a second to 1/2 a second)? Anything in particular you want me to address in the video?

Hello I need some help with my nikon d5200,it doesn't let me use the multiple exposure it's gels me that this option it's not available because of the settings I'm currently using. I don't know what exactly to chenge, can you help me?
@frederikboving
@frederikboving Жыл бұрын
Hi Rox, yes it is frustrating when it greys out the option without telling you why! It does the same if you try to upgrade the firmware with less than 80% battery charged! My best guess without knowing the D5200 is that you are shooting in RAW image quality and the camera only supports say JPG or a lower res image quality when shooting multiple exposures? Also, you cannot record multiple exposures in live view. And then I think - but the manual is a bit difficult to understand - that you need to be in one of the PASM modes, so try to change camera exposure mode and see if that helps. Best /frederik

I shot a waterfall once on a bright sunny day and I did not have any filters with me. I setup the camera to do 10 exposures, in multiple exposure mode, and it turned out the water was blurred instead of sharp.

No, you don't need to do anything special for the exposure. The camera will take care of it for you. Just set the exposure exactly as you would when you take a single shot. In multiple exposure mode, the camera will distribute the exposure across the shots.

I think most cameras would struggle in terms of computing power to manage 2 or more RAW files in parallel. Maybe some of the more modern top-end cameras (Z9?) can manage. You can of course shoot raw and then merge in post, but then you don't get the in-camera feedback that I really like.

What was Nikon thinking? This is crap and frustrating. No matter what I tried I can not make the D750 get rid of the greyed out multiple exposure setting. On my D300 no problem. Although I like the D750 but I would not buy another Nikon just because of this problem.

I asked Chat GPT and it came up with a number of suggestions for what you can check. In addition, I have noticed that the manual says the multiple exposures is not supported in live view mode. Me: The Nikon d750 can do multiple exposures. However, sometimes the option to set up multiple exposures is blocked (the menu items are greyed out). Can you help with reasons why the menu items are greyed out? ChatGPT: Certainly! The Nikon D750, like many other cameras, has certain settings and options that can be greyed out or unavailable under specific circumstances. Here are some common reasons why the multiple exposure option might be greyed out on the Nikon D750: (1) Shooting Mode: The multiple exposure feature might only be available in specific shooting modes, such as Manual (M), Aperture Priority (A), Shutter Priority (S), or Program (P) modes. Make sure you are in one of these modes to access the multiple exposure option. (2) Image Quality and Size Settings: If you have certain image quality or size settings selected, it might restrict the use of multiple exposures. For instance, shooting in RAW might limit some features. Try changing to a different image quality or size setting to see if the option becomes available. (3) Auto Exposure Bracketing (AEB): If Auto Exposure Bracketing is enabled, it might conflict with multiple exposures. AEB is another feature that captures multiple shots at different exposure settings automatically. If AEB is active, try disabling it to see if the multiple exposure option becomes accessible. (4) Exposure Compensation: If exposure compensation is applied, the camera might prioritize maintaining consistent exposure for each shot, which could affect the multiple exposure feature. Reset the exposure compensation to zero to see if this resolves the issue. (5) Flash Settings: If you have certain flash settings enabled, such as wireless flash or commander mode, it might prevent the use of multiple exposures. Adjust your flash settings to see if that allows you to access the multiple exposure feature. (6) Battery Level: Some features might be restricted when the battery level is too low. Ensure that your battery has sufficient charge to enable all camera functions. (7) Memory Card: If your memory card is nearly full or doesn't meet the camera's requirements for write speed, some features might be disabled. Make sure you have a suitable memory card inserted. (8) Custom Settings: Certain custom settings or user-defined presets could affect the availability of features like multiple exposures. Check if any custom settings you've configured are impacting the multiple exposure option. (9) Live View Mode: Sometimes, specific camera functions are disabled in Live View mode. Try switching to the optical viewfinder and see if the multiple exposure option becomes accessible. (10) Camera Firmware: Outdated or incompatible firmware might lead to unexpected behavior. Ensure that your camera has the latest firmware installed.
