I got the opportunity to shoot with Ethan Moses' one of a kind 20x24 Camera + 'Instamatic' direct positive color reversal process. It's always been a dream of mine to shoot with one of the original 7 20x24 polaroids, and I'm so grateful Ethan asked me to come try out his one of a kind camera.

Yes, finally. I want a digital camera with that sensor size and 10,000 M pixel. Then I will be satisfied. Edit: I wish it was a little bit bigger though, like 25x25? Perfect.

RA4 reversal is certainly a unique one, especially when blown up to such sizes. Though consistent results are hard to maintain, and is rather complex compared to the likes of cibachrome

Wow! I love instant photography, and I have read about the 20x24 Polaroids and seen photos of one of them, but this just brings it to another level. I still love shooting with "regular" instant film and 35mm and medium format film cameras, but I'd love to have a go at shooting portraits on a 20x24 some day (if I won the lottery). Thanks for creating an itch, I can't scratch ;-)

I think it isn't that much about winning the lottery. More about the time and effort to put into it. A ULF bellows that size like-new or made to order (specialized manufacturers in China) costs about 700-1000$. You can get cheaper when you get lucky with used. Some simple woodworking power tools (jigsaw, router, drill), the wood, some metal parts and screws, another couple of hundred $ (only). Aluminium Oxide powder in the right grits for the ground glass, some 50-100$. Two foldable heavy duty workbench stands to put the camera on, under 100$. Some picture frame glass cut to 20x24, like 20$ a sheet. Fresnel lenses? That's tricky, these large sizes cost like 200$+ a sheet and are a pain to ship, no one stocks them. Also tricky: lenses. Normal focal length for this format is 800mm, they are really rare and hard to find - with an image circle large enough to cover 20x24! Options are: the longer fast projector lenses from really big lecture hall episcopes (Leitz Epis, Beseler E.F., ...) - if you can find them, sometimes they pop on eBay, sometimes not. Here, a 600mm 3.6 or so should cover - but that already is hard to find. And they are triplets, so softer than a Tessar or Dialyte to the edge. Or: Reproduction lenses (Dialyte or Tessar types). Not as fast and literally quadruple the price of the projectors, but really sharp. Equally hard to find in these sizes, sometimes only like 10-100 have been made for the really large types (and you need 1000mm or at least 800mm to cover). So, depending on what and how many different lenses you want, you can spend between 300$ to some thousands on lenses. A pack of 50 sheets Fuji Crystal Archive paper costs 200-300$. Developing chemicals, buckets and the like, maybe another 200$. I think if you really want to pull through with it you can get by with a budget of 3000$ of material cost to build a 20x24 camera and use it. More important is the countless hours it takes to research all the things you should know - reading lens datasheets, history articles about optics, chemistry, understanding what exactly you need to get and how to construct and put it together.

Wish I could conceptually grasp the reversal process. As far as I understand, he burns away the exposed silver, exposes the remaining silver, then develops whatever’s left? …how that becomes color is beyond my comprehension.
