Too many people associate guns only with crime and death. Aside from the typical self defense argument (which I wholeheartedly support), guns can be great fun to have a day out shooting with friends and family. I feel most anti gun people aren’t familiar with that side of guns. I hope in addition to your purchases, you take time to enjoy them by taking them out to shoot. I know a lot of people who own a gun, but let it sit in a safe for years.

@@rickthe533 That's unfortunate, the ammo shortage has been a real pain, especially for new gun owners. As a college student, I was able to save up for my first gun several months before things started going downhill in March last year. When everything began to hit the fan, there wasn't a huge spike yet in ammo sales where I lived, but I knew it was coming, so I bought several boxes. I couldn't get that much because I am on a tight budget as a student, and although I have some reserves for emergency use, It's hard to afford ammo for practice.

We shot steel in the Marine Corps and pretty close. We would have little spots of blood on our faces. Fast forward 10 or so years I'm sitting on the couch watching a movie with my wife. In the corner of my nostril there was a bump. I start picking at it and what do I pull out of my skin. A piece of copper jacket from a 9mm ball round. It was surprisingly large I will say. My wife was mortified I kept that damn thing hell I wanted to put it back. Fond memories of range days. The MP5 was fun to shoot.

Hickok, we modeled our steel range around your idea of using shepherd's crooks from the local hardware store. They swing naturally deflecting jackets and lead downward, and the crooks are flexible allowing for even more absorption of the force of the rounds. Proper eye and ear pro is always a must. Thank you for pioneering the home rang ideas!

A bit of physics here: a large part of what prevents shrapnel from bouncing back at you is the swinging plate absorbs much of the energy/momentum of the bullet and thus it is not reflected back at you. When you shoot the coffin around 8 min in, one soda can bursts. Why? I'll tell you why: it was because that bullet impacted the coffin when the coffin was swinging back at you! All of your other shots impacted the target when it was swinging AWAY from you, which built up the stored momentum in the coffin! When the coffin is moving towards you and the bullet impacts then, the bullet's momentum is met with greater momentum in the opposite direction from the coffin, which mathematically is identical to the bullet impacting a wall that is moving towards you! This might be more intuitive if you imagine a head on collision on the road: if your truck moving 30 mph impacts a stationary truck of equal mass, much of your momentum is absorbed in the collision and the net momentum of the system after the collision is still moving in the direction as your truck was. But if instead you crash into a truck that is also moving 30mph towards you, that is mathematically equivalent to driving your truck impacting an immovable wall! If that truck you hit is now even heavier or faster than your truck, then the net momentum of the system is in the direction of the other truck, meaning you are going to have a bad day when you go from 30mph due east to 10mph due west in milliseconds.

I never really cared for firearms for the dangers of them, though I was always curious about some of the technical details of them. Now I know target shooting is a lot of fun, and defense of the common people is immensely important. But I just wanted to say that Hickock45 is an incredible teacher. A classic, safety oriented, knowledgeable man that takes a "dangerous" subject and applies common sense and teaches anyone and everyone on the proper practice. It's why a I followed and continue to watch to this day despite not even owning a firearm. He is an example of what the gun community should be about. Many of the comments here are surprisingly (to some communities) are also examples of this as I rarely see hateful and ill tempered comments. They are all about the products, safety and just sharing experiences. We are in a period where there is a divide where more guns means more violence, and less guns means more innocents killed a difficult and seemingly impossible situation to compromise. But that sweet middle ground is people with the respect and knowledge of what he/she is dealing with like a man like this. It's about knowledge and respect towards the risks of the hobby and educating about it. It's not political, it's not race or gender, or any other politics, but about the product and only about the product and expressing safety. Much respect for honest, genuine, channels like this.

I've been wondering about this subject myself. I made a target from a 1/2" plate and I designed it to hang at a downward angle but I still heard horror stories so I wasn't sure if I wanted to try it out.

I have my ar-500 steel free hanging from chains. No come back so far. I will have to rebuild the frame. The splatter is cutting through through the 2x6's and 4x4's

Yep.. Ditto. Just don't grab the frame.. jacket fragments will slice your hand quick. Did have 1 small piece come back about a week ago. First time in 4 years. (20 yards with a 357 I wasn't shooting.) I think it can come back if you hit it on the back swing.
@nickcase2635

Don't hang it if you are shooting within 50 yards, I hit a plate on a back swing with a 9mm and still have 8 of the 12 pieces that the bullet broke into in my leg. Surgeries and a mess. If I was to do it again, I would attach it to a fence post with the bullet deflecting downward into the ground.

9mm? 50 yards? really? The target was freely hanging and shrapnel made the 50 yard return? wow....just hard to believe...
@nickcase2635
@nickcase2635 7 жыл бұрын
Papa Bill, I never said I was shooting 50 yards. Haha mine was more like 15 yards. I said if you are shooting within 50 yards you might not want to hang it, instead I would suggest hanging it on a post angled downward to deflect the bullets into the dirt. But, to each his own. PS- if you read my other comment on this video, not just this thread, you will see that I have the full story there and I did clarify 15 yards. Sorry for the confusion.

Hickok thank you for posting this video! That helped me by answering so many questions I had about shooting steel. Does one need to worry about the post you put the shepard's hook on? Does it have to me circular or can it be any post?
@hickok45
@hickok45 7 жыл бұрын
The stand is generally not a problem, except if you are using these for rifle targets (.308, 5.56, etc.) out there at any range, you'll occasionally cut the shepard's hook and have to replace it. Remember, these things are designed for some other silly purpose, such as hanging plants, I guess, so they are not made of hardened steel, of course. A hot rifle round goes through them like butter.

I was RO at a GSSF match at our club. I was running the plate station. 8 plates @ 11yds. My truck was parked in the pit over 25 yds away from the target array. I had a tarp on the hood. At the end of the day after running a few hundred shooters on 2 racks, the tarp on my truck was covered with fragments, mostly pieces of copper jackets. They should rule out jacketed ammo at such a stage IMHO.

Hickock, A very good episode. You made some good points. 1. Using Hanging steel is very important. 2. Using Hardened steel is also very important. What you didn't say, and I think it is very important, is that people should hang their hardened steel targets so that the bottom of the target is further away than the top of the target. That makes the splatter hit the ground just in front of the target. There are many ways to do this. If done correctly, hardened steel hanging targets can be shot safely at fairly close range. Love your videos. Thank You. Duane

Use extra caution with kiddos and steel targets. Had a bounce back while shooting with my son where a jacketed round tumbled and stopped right up to our feet. Never in my life has this happened after thousands of rounds. We had a long talk about never telling momma about this 😉. It was a good opportunity to discuss shooting safety and eye protection.

Mr. Sloth Same here. Growing up as a kid there was one down the road from our house. Someone thought it would be a good idea and shoot a .22 off in the air. Well that went to my buddies house about a mile away and hit his above ground pool. They didn't know what happened until they called 911. Someone called the cops on the guy at the range and since they called the cops reporting mysterious damage to the pool he was arrested. They found the bullet in the pool since he sprung a small .22 hole in the siding.
