Today we talk about shooting the recently acquired BAR. As is per usual with older firearms, you can expect some hiccups and the need to troubleshoot. This one is no different. Fortunately, at the time of this video, I have seven months to figure it out before hunting season!
I see a gunsmithing follow up video in the future. Stay tuned!

I have a BAR in 30.06. Mine so s about 15 years old. The bolt hangs up about 1/2 way - not when shot, but just working the action. Only about 30 rounds have been fired thru this gun. I’m in Central Louisiana, and will be driving about 90 mile tomorrow to the only Louisiana Browning gunsmith, Simmons Sporting Goods in Bastrop Louisiana. I will update this comment once I get the rifle back with the diagnosis.

Definitely take the gas regulator off and clean the piston that’s inside the gas block as well as the inside of the gas block. Next I would buy a new leaf spring for the magazine and or a new magazine. Last as you also mentioned in your video replace the action spring and make sure recoil buffer isn’t cracked. I really think that combination of things will solve your feeding issues.

I have the same gun....if I run the mag with 3 in it good to go....put 4 in the mag and the last shot hangs EVERY time....if you put the clip up next to another caliber you’ll see why...nothing wrong with the gun just run 3 in the mag instead of 4.....my 270 280 and 7-08 don’t have this issue and they are all BAR....something about how the magazine is designed prevents correct feeding with 4 rounds...all my others run 4 rounds in the mag flawlessly....hope this sheds some light

I had a 243 that was made in the early 90's. I was amazed at the accuracy! 85g sierra BTHPs is what I loaded for it and it would shoot a consistent in. group, when I did my part. Why did I get rid of that rifle?!? I don't remember it ever having any function issues. Hope you get yours ironed out!

David, my first impressions of the rifle at 36 years old, it looks like it's in good condition from what I could see in the video. The wood and bluing didn't show any obvious signs of "Oops" moments. As far as the operational aspects go, gas systems can get fouled and springs age as you mentioned in your review. I'd find a gunsmith who's familiar with the BAR design and ask him to give it a cleaning and a once over. Old guns, like old cars, need a little TLC now and again. That rifle looks like a great piece, especially in the mild 308 chambering. Yes Sir, a little TLC and that rifle will be running like a charm.

My dad bought one in .270, he loved it but sadly he rested it on a tree, the action side against it, it broke something and it wouldn’t cycle, i inherited my grandpas chambered in .243, killed 2 deer with it really enjoy it, it has even less recoil than the .308, fun gun to shoot

keep the piston cleaned, and do not oil. put masking tape on the slot, where the bolt handle slides, to see if action [ bolt ] travels all the way to the rear. also, perhaps a different load

Take it apart and clean it. It will work good after that. I polish the throat area were the bullet sits in the barrel. Make sure the gas system is cleaned and degreased. The bolt needs grease or oil. Theres a fpd file or something you could download on the internet to tell you what parts need polishing. I just got a 270 bar last week and its apart for cleaning and degreasing.

Total blasphemy. But, could you free float it, add a pistol grip, and make higher capacity magazines? Not asking you to. It would be interesting though. Edit: Saw the gas system. No free floating that.
@drdrake63
@drdrake63 4 жыл бұрын
I guess I don’t understand your comment, blasphemy as in that this rifle should never have any problems? Any solid semi auto hunting rifle is going to develop issues when it gets old enough. Typically fixable without much effort. I’m sure this one is. If I need higher capacity in 308 I would just simply move to a different platform. I view this rifle the same as I would a bolt gun. If the first couple shots don’t get it, I don’t deserve to get the deer.
@jeramyw
@jeramyw 4 жыл бұрын
@@drdrake63 No no. The blasphemy part is turning this classic design into a "tactical assault weapon". The reasons to have "high capacity magazines" is for fun, freedom, protection, war, and slaughtering invasive wild boar.
