Can you explain how and what fill light is and if the settings are different between both strobes? This video is great!
@MattHernandez
@MattHernandez Ай бұрын
Fill light fills in the shadows so they get a smaller amount of light but you see some detail rather than being so dark. Yes you’d have your settings lower than the main light depending on how bright you want it.

Just enough to be out of frame. Not sure if an exact distance. I honestly don’t remember but I usually start at full power when I’m outside and adjust the power from there!

What was your ratio between main light and fill light? I have a deep focus reflector, very impressive modifier. Thank you for posting on KZfaq. Just subscribed to your channel.
@MattHernandez
@MattHernandez Жыл бұрын
I don’t have an actual ratio, I just eyeball it and go with what I think looks good. Just don’t use too much full or it will get flat.

Obsessed with your videos. Question for you: I struggle with exposing for the sky and then adding off camera flash. I seem to always get grainy photos when I try this technique.. help?!
@MattHernandez
@MattHernandez 8 ай бұрын
If you’re getting grain you just be using a higher ISO. Try exposing using your cameras native or base iso!

Do you always use two strobe lights on every shoot? Do you use just know if you are just getting started. Also what lens are you using during your sessions?
@MattHernandez
@MattHernandez Жыл бұрын
Yes I do always use lights. I might mix in natural light but the majority usually has strobes. Starting out just get what you can afford! Even if you have to shoot natural light that’s still a good thing to learn.

Do your deep focus reflectors stack on each other well for storage? None of my reflectors stack which is a pain. I was playing around with normal 7” reflectors and was surprised to find out my octa softboxes with no diffusion was like half a stop to a full stop more powerful. I probably need to play with distances more was probably 8 ft away. It’s kind of a pain to test but think I need to pull the trigger on some deep focus for daytime shots. Been trying to play with compositing shots off of our trampoline and even with 2 600s was struggling getting enough light during the day from the distance. I think the focus could probably help dramatically.
@MattHernandez
@MattHernandez Жыл бұрын
Yes you need some deep focus reflectors for sure! That’s the best way to overpower harsh daylight outside.
@MattHernandez

I always take shots I would on a normal shoot in my videos. Not everything is going to be a portfolio piece, so keep that in mind. I always use the stands as well as the field for soccer photos. Thanks for watching and the feedback!

@@MattHernandezgeneral question, have you tried shooting inside a pop up tent to control lighting during the day? I suppose you could think of it as mobile studio. Use some black backgrounds, fog and props etc. It was just a thought I had in case weather and lighting wasn't favorable.

Do you aim for 150-200 shots in total to give to the client or is that how many shots you usually end up with before you edit?
@MattHernandez

It depends honestly. I usually take anywhere between 150 and 400 and deliver a minimum of 80.

What do u get if u only have 1 light?
@MattHernandez

I think the second frame at 6:34 has only one light. The shadows would just be darker without the second light, which was just a fill light to add in detail in the shadows

@MattHernandez
@MattHernandez 11 ай бұрын
Yeah I explained why I had to use hard light in the video, but that also wasn’t the point of the video 🤣. Shooting tight, middle, wide to maximize your time was the point. I have plenty of other videos using softer lighting though. Thanks for watching!

@@MattHernandez Frankly, I did not listen, I only watched the video, and in parts. And in my opinion, this work is done poorly.
@MattHernandez
@MattHernandez 11 ай бұрын
Oh ok that makes total sense, thank you for explaining! If you had listened you’d have known that the point of this video wasn’t a lesson on why soft lighting is more flattering than hard lighting, it was on posing and shooting efficiently. That being said…I personally thought that, having no option but hard light because I left my softer modifiers at the studio (as I stated in the video), I lit it pretty well with what I did have (hard modifiers). Which I think is a good lesson in itself: making the best of what you have because every situation isn’t perfect. However, I’m always trying to improve my skills and find ways to get better, so I’m definitely open to constructive criticism from anyone I can learn from. I’d love to hear your thoughts on what I could have done to make it better. Do you have any examples of your work you could show me for reference? Thanks for the help in advance!
