You know the only thing better than shooting at 30 fps with the Sony a1? Shooting 60FPS with the Sony a7RV!!! I truly believe that within the next three years more than 50% of us will be shooting sports this way. The only question I have is whether or not we will even pull stills out of the video in the future. The new "tracking on" feature exclusively in the a7RV is amazing as you get to apply all the new AI function + tracking AF without the need of touch focus on the back screen. The only drawback I see is that the rolling shutter on this camera is noticeable with the quick pans needed to capture both the release as well as the catch. I was shooting the game at 1/640th f/2.8 at 2000 ISO with the 1.4 on and 1000 ISO with it off. What do you think?

This is superb. I've watched decades of sport and seeing the focus hold as someone weaves through a crowd is stunning. Would have been great at the World Cup👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽Happy New Year

I no longer take pictures anymore. I shoot video of everything at 60P and then pull stills from the footage. Great for concerts!

What is your workflow for pulling stills? It would seem that the A7RV would be the best camer for that.

Patrick I read your little write-up about the video! The video was clean and sharp! I didn't think about rolling shudder until about halfway through then I started wondering is there rolling shutter? If you are looking for it closely you will see it! I'm a stills shooter! Did you shoot any stills??? That's what I want to see! I'm thinking of using this camera for wildlife, and birds! I still have the a9 and it does a great job for me, for birds in flight! The a7r5 would be my landscape camera too!👍👍👍

IMHO the A9 is not really suited to anything except press work (like football). Image quality isn't actually that good, even if the tech certainly is

I have gotten into the habit of always having 2 body's with me!!! In a lot of cases the a9 is adequate for now! At some point I will switch to the a1. Lol then all my boxes will be checked! I'm not happy at all about the CF-a cards!!!😥

Hi Patrick - great video. After watching the new A9iii preview I wondered if this new camera will have this type of video tracking as using the touch tracking via the back screen isa real pain as would rather use the new upgraded EVF to frame video capture?
@PMRTV
@PMRTV 9 ай бұрын
We can already do this with the a7RV, a6700, and the two new a7C bodies. The feature is called "Tracking ON." I have some videos on this but no one is talking about it!!!! it's crazy. Yes, a9III will 100% have Tracking ON. Check this out: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/as92dpxzqLzGYY0.html

@@PMRTV Thanks. Watched the video you linked after I’d commented, fabulous news as I’d been stuck trying to find an alternative to touch tracking for the A9 & thought it was my lack of video setting knowledge…. Looking forward to some A9iii real reviews once you’ve received a unit to try at a game or 2 before making my mind up vs an A1 for my upgrade.

I'm reealy hoping the a1 will get the tracking on feature next year! This would simplify things for me considerably as I have three bodies. @@iainbimages

Great! Thank you for showing us that the A7R5 can be used in such scenarios as well, because every "content creator" says that the A7R5 has a horrible rolling shutter and don't use it for videos like you showed us! What I see this may be the case, but in the real world it doen't matter at all. Another thing is that they blame the a7RV has only 10fps in still, what seams not ot much compared to other models on the market. I aways answer them if I need more frames for any reason, I'll do a video and with 8K 24fps or 4k 60fps i have enough quality to extract a picture for further use. If I share that on instagram, facebook or any printing media, thy won't see any differnce at all. The new kid on the block doesn't even know what we had available before the digital cameras came along. My first Pentax Super A has had only 5 fps and only with an extra motodrive attachment and after 6,5 sec the film was full ! I don't understand the actual trend anymore :)

Awesome. I am getting this camera. I have a question. It feels that a long prime is a better option if one has a second cam with let's say a 24 70 or 70 200 for the closer action? My second cam would be a6000.

yes, but I wish Sony made a 300mm f/4G or a 300mm f/2.8GM lens for this exact reason!

Good content as allways! The new camera seems good at AFing! Do you know if the A1 is gonna get a new firmware update after v 1.31? with animal and bird af in video, and correction to bird af. Thanks for sharing.

hey Patrick! Hope you are well. I was wondering why you would be shooting at 1/640 if you're recording at 60p. Given the 180 rule, you'd need to be around 1/100-160. I think slowing your shutter speed down may work to minimize some of that rolling shutter artifact.

I over-crank all the time so that I can glean stills out of the video. If you use the normal one stop over frame rate, the stills cannot stop the action enough to get a good still frame grab. I've been shooting 1/1000th but I tried 1/640th for this game. In future, I'll go back to 1/1000th as it just looks better.

@@PMRTV oh that makes so much sense. I didn’t even think about pulling stills from the video.

Superb video. May I ask why the 1/640 shutter with a 2000 ISO? 60P would mean a minimum of 1/120 (if doubling the frame rate) which would likely mean a lower ISO. As always, I love what you post/share in various forums/channels. You do amazing work man. If you get out to NorCal on your BMW, shoot me a DM on Facebook. You've always got a meal waiting for you in Sacramento/NorCal. :)

thanks for the invite!!! I keep a Super Tenere out West so it's actually possible. It's in AZ right now so I can just fly and ride. @@PMRTV SUCH good advice! Grab a photo from the video with a higher speed, overcranked frame rate. LOVE it. This solves the two camera problem...using one for video and one for stills. I love my Black Rapid double sling, but it's a pain to sometimes switch off from the video body to the stills body. Thanks! And offer is always open. I don't have a motorcycle anymore, but I'm always up for meeting up and driving you around. :)
