The true comparison between these two projectors specifically is right at the beginning. Both Sony and Epson are having difficulties with “very dark scenes” such as in the movie: 1917. Sony sometimes goes dark completely so you can’t see critical detail; while the Epson 12000 turns black to an odd shade of “blue” in some of those scenes: Flits back and forth. Both situations are rather annoying and rather surprising. Meanwhile, see for yourself, there is no editing in the FOMO footage. (Dreammedia mention via an MWAVE announcer in highly edited footage BUT Dreammedia neglect to mention that its the Epson that suffers from the “blue” hue issue.) Suffice to say both Sony and Epson still have some work to do regarding the use of laser as a light source. First generation teething problems, I guess?!

@@percybedford6266 Agreed! That assumes sony, in particular, will do it?! At the MWave shootout they did say they were only using “default settings”. That would imply there was room for improvement, BUT I heard from the expert commentator that base black levels can’t be changed by calibration. It would have to be done then by a sony firmware update. I currently have a sony 285es 4K projector, so what sony does matters to me if I am going to do an upgrade/replacement. I’m sitting on my cash until this issue gets sorted. JVC is of course an option, but they are too big, too heavy, and run too loud for my particular shelf installation.

@@marvinabugov4579 I saw Flomo's short vid on the projector shootout and I made that same comment. Some one from Sony replied and he said he didn't have enough time to dial it, but he said to expect better results from the next convention coming up. I saw another vid that recently dropped on the 5000es and the HDR looked good in that vid. The blacks looked really good. The review is on Gordon Liang's channel. I think the 5000es is the best bang for the buck.

@@percybedford6266 I saw Laing’s vid as well. Meanwhile, I am waiting to see what comes from the Value electronics shootout in October. Those guys know how to do a “shootout” -- properly! MWAVE had a good “beginning” but not how Value Electronics does it - yet. The Sony commentator noted in a comment, that I heard, is that it is not just “black” but the “tone-mapping” of “base-black” (he implied sony - in order to better compete with JVC who seem to have got that issue dialed-in perfectly - need to do some tweaking in its firmware. Meanwhile, JVC needs to tweak its brightness because its “‘white tone-mapping” washes colours out at the opposite end of the spectrum. I am waiting to see before I open my wallet. I jumped too soon the last time when shortly after launching the 285es, Sony launched the 295es - that was significantly better.

Correct. Just stating a “fact” during the MWAVE shootout. Just looking for objectivity considering that whole video was publicly posted.

Cameras are not perfect, especially in low light situations like this. There were many things that were seen or seen differently at the event than what was captured on camera.

@@ascendav Except the commentator made a point of mentioning the blue hue - in real time - several times! However, I accept your point, but a pixel shifter is not what I am in the market for.

The epson was blue due to a calibration issue where blue was pushed. This can be calibrated out.

Epsom vs Sony which mind u r going to be best selling projectors, finally average mum n dad can consider high end projector now as u know few yrs ago 4K laser projector from one biggest company’s like Sony n epson, unless like me yrs ago only one I can afford where UST laser projectors from China, most people don’t really understand or do the research won’t risk buying unknown brand from AliExpress or even Amazon they put there trust n brand names, so they rely on u guys with helpful information b4 they going commit thete hard earned money, I’m sorry but read all other comments they where disappointed, hoping they going get some idea which is best suited, I know each one pros n cons, but to make simple if u going for dark room for just movies Sony is choice but for gaming I would go with epson

We had a new video producer that wasn’t as familiar with the products yet as he came from a different industry and Zak flew in to show support with only 2 hours available to shoot content but didn’t have enough time to spend at the event and give his full attention.
