Boot camp is/was a memorable time of my life. Circa 1971 I arrived Navel training Center San Diego at night. I remember how quiet it was, there were these men (in uniform) marching, as if patrolling. They off loaded us and herded us to these barracks. I was dead tired from a long day of travel, the bed was comfortable with clean sheets. As I lay in bed I’m thinking this isn’t so bad then drifted off to sleep. Three hours ours later the lights were turned on and some jerk callings us WORMS kept yelling at the top of his lungs, get the heck up!! They herded us out front of the barracks, it was cold, everyone stood shivering wiggling (like a bunch of worms). They marched us over to the chow hall for a very good breakfast. The remaining part of that day I was stripped of any semblance of my former self. I looked just like everyone else! That was just the beginning, I learned things about myself, how I was no longer an individual but a member of a group who functioned like a well oiled machine. We were no longer worms but a cohesive group of men who could follow directions. Consequences of not following direction you asked. My offense is I had mt dungarees rotated in the wrong direction, they were folded correctly but just clocked 90 degrees. That little mistake cost me 2hours of marching to the star spangled banner with a 22lb “leaded” rifle after the evening meal, everyone else was enjoying a relaxing evening. Make no mistake it wasn’t fun but it engrained in me, behaviors/attitudes and confidence that propelled me to a career that has served me well. I wouldn’t want to repeat it but I absolutely do not regret any part of it I think every young person should go to boot camp, not to go fight in a war but to give them a good starting point in life. Your son will come home a changed, a more confident man. Parents can only do so much, boot camp gives a young person a whole different perspective of life.

Proud of your son Joining the National Guard. I have many military friends so I joined my state defense force recently. Purely voluntary we supplement the guard when they need extra people mostly for things like search and rescue, but unpaid and without the ability to be deployed. However the unpaid part saves the states millions of dollars a year. Idaho's guard is inactive but many states still have theirs. We should do everything we can as civilians to make things easier on our service members.

The Rockies are spectacular but we live in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Our house is at 5600 ft. We're just around 10 miles from the highest peak east of the Rockies. I grew up here and love the Hills.

6% grade for 100 feet of elevation is 1,667 feet of road/trail. Not sure it needs to be that flat. Just keep it in mind. That was chosen for our interstate highway system for a reason.

My grandmother had that same exact painting in her house when I was growing up and it hung on the wall until she went into the nursing home at 99, She died in 2007 at 102.5. My grandfather found the painting in a hotel starving artist art sale in the late 1960’s. Heath your dog house looks nice!

I will be praying for your son in his Service career . This is from an almost 24 year veteran 4 year's in the U S Air Force and then 19 years and 10 month's in the U S Army ( 9 1/2 years in the Idaho National Guard then , 9 years and 4 months in the Army Reserve ) . I will be honest if I was asked to go serve again. I would in a heartbeat . As a good friend always says VIA CON DIOS , or " go with God " !...!...!

Aw what an adventure, as a parent I can relate to your worries, love those markets and your new rooms are coming along, love the finishing touches. I thought of young kids bouncing on the bed and how low the ceiling fan was, personally I would go for Ductless Mini-Split Air Conditioning System rather than a ceiling fan.

Still waiting for you to swap the double doors you have downstairs for one of the windows upstairs to make another outside patio spot for the upstairs space
