Apologies if someone already mentioned this, but a couple large ceiling fans moving slowly would move that heat from your wood stove around nicely, and when reversed give you a nice breeze in the warmer months. Happy for you guys getting that garage door installed. What a difference it will make out there!

The reversible ones which I think most are, would be great out there in the shop to circulate the heat in the winter and move the air around in the summer too.

Good job Heath. Your taking ownership of your responsibilities is exactly what made me fall in love with your channel 3 years ago. I wish more men in this day and age felt like you and I do about taking care of our families from a love and safety standpoint. Not that others don't love their families. They just aren't willing to put in the work to move ahead and cover the bumps along the way so that the family doesn't feel it.

How about a “carport” on the front side of the shop? Any snow that slides off the shop would land on the carport roof and then off onto the far side of the drive. Keeps the path clear and shelters whatever you park there. Design it to be the full length of the shop.

That’s side of the shop is just crying for a good 12’ deep overhang the length of the building to park your truck and trailer with a good size walkway to the door and chickens. Having all that under cover will save you a lot of time and protection from weather.

Hi there from Maine. My husband has been building over the years. Knowing how hard it is to get lumber he wanted to share a helpful tid bit ...your 1x12” that you are planning on siding your shop with, you can miter the ends of the boards at a 45 degree angle overlapping the bottom with the top to insure no water penetration and then you could use random lengths of 1x12” instead of having to wait for 16 footers.

This week, back east we had a storm come thur... A guy in NY state, sterring went out and he slide off the road. It took 10 hours to find him, he was calling 911, they could only narrow down a 3 mile strech of road. One of the State Police went out to look for the guy... while trying to get through the snow bank looking for a mail box, they had finally figured about where he was, the Police officer surprisingly found the guys driver door !!! Another person came by and helped pull the man out, he was put in the police car and taken to the firehouse, they took him to the hospital.... The guy is doing well, no lasting injuries. He was under 40" of snow ! So yeah, you need to be care full .... Merry Christmas to all ....

I believe a 2-stage snow thrower 8 feet wide mounted on the front of a bigger tractor with a heated cab would make you happy. One trip each way throwing the snow off the road 30 feet without any smashing and pushing on a pickup truck frame. Pickups only last about 3 years before they fall apart in Canada doing what you are. It's harder to push snow than move the snow off to the side. Fill in low spots for safety or the opposite side of the road if its getting blown by wind back onto the cleared road. Now that you are there permanently it's probably cheaper than repairing every season or upgrading existing equipment. It doesn't have to be new to use it maybe 30 days a year.

So add a carport to extend the roof over to your pasture fence to allow the snow to slide off and you dont have to worry about the snow piling up at your walk door or needing to remove it to get to the livestock to feed

There is a "cost" to not addressing the issues of the road for signage, drainage, culverts, trimming trees and branches, and adding gravel. You have uncertainty, damage to equipment, worry, anxiety, getting stuck, cost of unsuitable equipment. You can continue to procrastinate and fight it or meet the issues head on and spend a summer season working on the road. As you say, it's your responsibility and you use it more than anyone else, so it should be up to you to correct it. It doesn't all have to be done in one year, but if you prioritize fixing the worst areas and have a written plan, the road will continue to get better as you go.

Cedar, I know he doesn’t read these comments, so I’m relying on you to pass this friendly tip along ( and I know Heath already knows this but sometimes it takes someone saying it to make it click) but if he would get some visqueen up on that ceiling in the garage, it will hold A LOT MORE HEAT. Right now with no ceiling installed he is just heating the attic space of that garage. Have him put up plastic sheeting, House wrap , or something to trap that heat down closer to the floor until he is able to finish off the ceiling with drywall or whatever he plans to do. It will make a huge difference in the mean time. Keep up the great vids!!

A number of folks commented on the snow sliding off the shop roof. Most suggested building a shed roof over to your pasture fence. It's tough to tell in the video how far that is but it looks like 12 to 14 feet . You will fight this forever, I know, I did it for ten years on my shed. Finally fixed it for a couple thousand dollars. Now no more ice and snow right in front of the door. Sure some might blow in the ends but your side by side can easily push that out. There's nothing romantic about shoveling snow! Merry Christmas.

Had a mountain home in Hood Rive, Or. with 1 1/2 miles of private winding canyon edge road. Some days it would snow so hard that I lived in my big old military plow truck (w/o power steering) pushing snow. Moving the snow out into the canyon edge. After full melt, I had snow push decks into the canyon that were a good 15' off the road on built up snow. Always amazed me how the snow pack held that big truck with the 8' blade. Marked the trees that I pushed by. Sometimes it would snow 4-5' in a day. It had to be pushed at every 1' of snow, for if it got iced up, it could not be pushed for the rest of the winter or until thaw without blade/truck breakdowns. Wonderful place, but I finally moved to less snowy country! Good to keep on top of it. Though on the shop. Why not put a lean-to out to the fence line so snow slides into pasture. Would give clear walk way and snow free space to park a truck and the trailer???

Talking to friends who want to buy snow removal equipment, mainly snow blowers were we live, I tell them to buy for the worst case scenario as opposed to a typical snow. Looks like you know that as well. I sure bet you were happy to have welded up the snowplow bracket in the shop, out of the snow and blowing wind, than in the middle of the driveway. And now with the door you can pull it into the shop, close the door, and do it in even more comfort!
