this week i build a much needed lumber rack. This lumber storage solution was really budget friendly, only costing about 25 bucks.

A lot stronger than I expected, honesty. That's incredible that it only took 32" of plywood

You could always use a Jay Bates-esque piece of conduit as an intermediate shelf between all of those shelves. Would be easy to add after the fact. I use the conduit method in my shop and have zero problems with it what-so-ever.

I think those supports would suck up a lot of room and they can definitely hold more weight, so I am not sure I'd add an extra one. Just keep stacking up to the next support.

I have a system like this and while very strong here are my thoughts from a few years of use. When I first saw the layout I thought fill in the gaps to add more supports. Reason why is that when the space between support is large like here you start to fill that up and then when you need a piece that is at the bottom it becomes a major PITA to remove all the wood to get to the piece you need at the bottom! I think better solution is to forgo the space taken up by the supports and add more supports so each 'shelf' holds less wood making it easier to get at the wood on each shelf.

Well welcome back sir lol I like how you sandwiched the support in between the longer pieces I should have done that with mine maybe then the shelves would have been even and all my would weren't have bowed on me yeah after like 3 or 4 months I noticed all the wood on my rack was bowed because the middle support bracket was a little bit higher than the other two so like $400 worth of wood is junk now on the Rockler about the Carter Lumber rack for 69 bucks said screw it rather be safe than sorry but I did like your bill though and if I ever need another Lumber rack that's how I'm going to make it sorry for such a long comment LOL

Here in Christchurch, New Zealand we get earthquakes. So when I built mine, I drilled vertical holes in the ends of the horizontal supports and ran some rope through it. I don't know how effective it is, but it does give me some peace of mind :-)

Looks like your rack may be thick enough that you could drill holes add some 1\2 in steel rod in those gaps for more storage. :)

The things I may have done differently - NOT glue those shelf arms in place, and also allow for more frequent spacing. This would give better use of the entire height of that rack. The shelf supports will be plenty solid in the sockets, and you could put longer ones on the upper row/s, etc. Overall, you have a good system. Thanks for posting

Looks good. What type of drill bit are you using to predrill. It looks like there is a countersink built in?

Hey Ryan, just moved out to New Brunswick from the west coast, curious any good places in the Saint John or Moncton area to buy hardwoods or and plywood? Home Depot doesn't usually carry the greatest quality of plywoods =)

So, ive always stored my lumber vertically, and find it to be very efficient. However, i never see anyone else fo that, is their a reason not to. Good video though
@Shopbuilt
@Shopbuilt 6 жыл бұрын
+Blake Haskins vertical storage is definitely alot better and I will have some in my shop as well, the problem is the ceiling height, I'm actually less than 8ft so I need horizontal storage for the longer stuff.

How many light in your shop? How many 110v and 220v plugs , getting a new 784 sqft shop soon waiting on closing
@Shopbuilt

+Gary and judi Boyd 12 lights (24 4ft bulbs) plugs are ever 8ft at counter hieght and one 220v. I would recommend having plugs at both counter hieght and floor level.
