The Real Gunsmith

The Real Gunsmith

Жыл бұрын

FYI: Photos never shared before are throughout the video.
It seems that some keyboard warriors have recently decided, after watching Randy working at a lathe, that he has no knowledge of how to operate a lathe or chamber a barrel using 3 lug center chucks.
That is absolutely so far from the truth. Unfortunately, too many “machinists” have some areas lacking in their education and don’t understand the methods that Randy uses, which are, frankly, spot on, top accurate method for chambering barrels.
So Randy put together this video, for those who think he may not know what he is doing, after decades of running a lathe for his shop, but also for shops like Burris Scope Company, and Speer, CCI. Where, son of a gun, they found out his method of chambering barrels was much better than the methods they’d used over the years for their test rifles.
A bit more of a history of Randy’s experience than shared before. He is one of the few gunsmiths that builds custom rifles on a wide range of action types. He offers a wide range of rifle types and calibers for clients to choose from.

Ah, the Great P.O. Ackley (genuflecting)! Never met him but my mentor as a kid was Major N.F. McNaughton, USMC, retired. Mac passed back in 2001. Back in the day, Mac and P.O. Ackley cooked up the .243 (6mm) Ackley Krag. The result was a sporterized Krag featured in Shotgun News. During my youth, I rolled many a prairie poodle with that SMOOTH rifle and wildcat cartridge! Mac intended to leave the Krag to me, but his house was broken into and it was never recovered. :-( Now an old man, an Oklahoma kid I was lucky enough to know some of the old-timers. I knew Art Mashburn and Al Marlar, the later the gunsmith who did the hands-on work developing the Mashburn line of magnum cartridges. Following retirement, Al lived in my neighborhood and did my "personal" gunsmithing in the shop in his backyard.....

Randy, there is absolutely no doubt in my mind about the superb accuracy of your builds. Both the 25-06 AI and the stunningly gorgeous takedown rifle in both .257 WBY Mag & .300 WBY Mag are tack drivers. I have 5 new mounts and 18 tanned out hides to prove it. You are amazingly talented!

I just picked up 8 pounds of BL-C(2) for $33.25 per pound delivered. I’m replacing my IMR-4320 powder with this one for reloading .303 British and .308 Winchester service rifles. BL-C was originally for .303 British and BL-C(2) was designed for 7.62 NATO. Why the good price? The Range Rambos want the designer powders that have magic powers and cost 50 to $65 per pound delivered when ordering 8 pounds. This leaves BL-C(2) collecting dust on the shelf and now on sale.

Well old favorites are still impossibly expensive. IMR 4895 for example, can’t find any and when you can you’re going to let it go or pay up big. Old powder designed for the 06 and perfect for all 30 caliber cartridges. IMR 4350 I paid like $40/lb for the last I bought of it. Crazy.

You are a wealth of knowledge. I am very happy to hear and learn from the best. Thank God for you sharing your experiences with a lifetime of targets saved in picture frames lining your hallway of the one hole 3 shot groups. I've got a few myself, so I don't change nothing with my handloaded ammo for each one. My latest experience was with my 257 Weatherby Vanguard. Very repeatable. These groups are very worthy of proof in their own picture frames in my opinion. You're the real deal, and I appreciate your time and effort and expertise. It wouldn't surprise me if you built the rifle that Carlos Hathcock won the cup with. Please keep up the damn good work, sir.

Had the same thing happen to me at my local range. Instead of just asking for shooting tips, they get green with envy and then they set in crying like babies. I got sick of their henhouse ways after decades and now I go to another range 50 miles from home. 60 dollars a year Instead of 90, and it's a better range. I can also go there anytime the sun's up. I don't mind hanging out there cause the folks going there are country folks who don't mind asking for tips on the fundamentals of marksmanship. I gladly do my best to help, when folks ain't arrogant. Really enjoy your videos, and I am saving everyone of them for my video library when I get questions in my mind. I have been an avid hunter and reloading fool for over 35 years. I am a bona-fide fan of precision shooting and I spent a lot of time and money working up loads for each individual rifle that I own. This is very rewarding.

Years ago I was banned at our local shooting range as, with friends and oldest son, using my rifles, we were cleaning up at the matches. I offered to let others use my rifle, for a rental fee and cost of ammo and that ticked them off. I guess I was supposed to eat the cost of components to satisfy them. One guy finally asked me to build him a rifle, THEN was astounded that he'd have to pay for it!! Thought, I guess, as a mucky-muck on the shooting range board of directors he should get it free!! So I understand your frustration. Glad you found somewhere to shoot. Thank you, very much! That is a great compliment. Good shooting.

You are definitely NOT, just some guy building rifles. This is a channel of absolute truth & fact & it is enjoyable & refreshing. I have 2 customs with Hart barrels, bedded in H&S precision stocks. When I set these guns in a shooting sled & load test, they are absolutely incredible. When they are out of the sled, it’s all up to me. The guns shoot. Me ? I could use some coaching. I shoot competitions & yes, if a feller wins too often, they look at trying to disqualify his shootin iron, much faster than acknowledging his extreme ability. I heard a marksman say one day, you are welcome to use my rifle next shoot, when someone complained. The losers are always blaming, loads, wind, gear, They talk about absolutely everything but themselves. They don’t face the truth. When I loose, it’s me, it’s all me, my technique & nothing else. I’m shooting proven & capable rigs. Truth, logic & fact is what you present here.

Some comments have mentioned that they don’t think they could afford him. I can tell you his prices are very reasonable. You’re probably pricing out a full custom build. The component costs alone could easily top 3,000-5,000 depending on what you’re wanting. If you have a good action to work with, that feeds and functions properly, buy a Boyd’s hardwood stock and have him chamber a new barrel on that action and bed it into that stock. That will get you custom rifle accuracy, or darn close to it, for a price most folks can afford with a little saving and planning.

Funny thing about a know it all, if they would just listen to a sentence until the end, they could learn something but they interject too soon, assuming they “know it all” and they never get to learn the lesson. That is why a know it all stays exactly where they are and seldom learns anything new. They are too smart to learn. It’s a sad situation.

You could shut everyone up by doing these few things after the next barrel you chamber. Right after you finish reaming take a dial indicator that has 0.001 gradations, put it in the chamber and spin the barrel. If it has zero runout or near knowbody can say the way you do it creates sloppy or loose chambers. Then if you want to go a step further get a bore scope and take pictures of the free bore / land grove area after its reamed. This will show them you ream on center where it counts. I personally wouldn't chamber like you do but I'm definitely NOT going to tell you that yout method is wrong. 😊

No, thank you, I'll build my own, but do carry on, the only whining I hear seems to be coming from you may be you could use some cheese.

Whoever is saying he doesn’t know what he is doing is simply wrong. I called three different gunsmiths to chamber a 6.5-06 to 6.5x280 AI. They all said no, the reamer will chatter, the carbon build up will trash the reamer…etc. They were adamant that I needed to start over with a brand new barrel. Randy said yes right away, he was baffled as to why they all said no. He got the work done quickly and lo and behold, the rifle shoots beautifully. I just sent him two more rifles. He is, in fact, the REAL gunsmith. These other guys need to stop typing and start taking notes.

Some are meant to build and some are meant to talk. I am not sure you are meant for the talking. Let your work talk ....

Ok so in a nutshell you place yourself on the same level as Chuck Norris? 😂 Internet is full of troll you know. No need to make a video every time someone trolls you or you’ll get gut cancer. Just make awesome guns and let it slide.

From The Real Gunsmith's Wife, Cathy: Are you trying to insult us or hurt our feelings? You failed. We do and have, gotten work from all over the US for the last 50+ years, and this was way before YT. We have, currently, clients from all over the US and we've had clients from out of the country. Prior to YT our "ads" were word of mouth references and a few magazines We are very aware of the thousands around the country who haven't heard of Randy and that is fine. But our follower base is in the 10's of thousands, our views are in the 6 million + range and we hear from people from all over the country and the world. We have enough work to keep us busy for the foreseeable future. We don't strive to be everything to everybody nor to be anything but what we are. And by the percentage of Likes vs. Dislikes, and the correspondence, calls and work we get, we are popular enough to feel very, very blessed. Why any keyboard warrior thinks puffing your chest out and being a blow hard is necessary is beyond me. May you be blessed in your life so your angst about others success will disappear like a feather in a wind, even if others success doesn't measure up to your ideas of what it should be.
