Removing a stuck oil filter can be hard enough when you have the right tools. The dilemma is even more difficult when the correct tools are not available. Find out how I handled this when it happened to me.

I watched your video and enjoyed your efforts. I adapted your idea, I couldn't tie it up the same. I put a knot in the webbing and slipped the loop through the closed wrench small enough to wrap around the filter. Then I used the same leverage against the knot and loop to rotate the filter. It came off in 2 minutes. Thanks for the video!

You lucked out. because your filter edge is rough which has friction. Having a smooth filter here and anything and everything slips! Guess i will have to take screwdriver.

Maybe you could have used a few rubber bands or wrapped it with something to add friction. Add texture by roughing up the outside surface with something rough like a small saw or rasp.

Pretty good way to get it off, one thing I noticed is that the gasket from the old filter was still on the engine. I hope you noticed that too and removed it before putting on the new one. Like some previous comments get a different brand of filter like WIX or NAPA GOLD, which is made by WIX. Fram filters fall apart on the inside and if you are going to be leaving this filter on for as long as you did the one you took off in this video you probably were not filtering anything.

Next time you can just use a short piece of bike chain/timing chain or motor bike chain welded to an old socket and then cut a slot in the socket the chain will just fit through and tighten on itself, these are handy when there is little or no room around the filter, so just use an extension in the socket and a ratchet., do NOT use this for install as you will overtighten and deform the rubber gasket and it will leak, use for UNDOING only.

Great tip. I tried similar with a tie down strap and just lacked the leverage. Being 9 weeks shy of the 5 year anniversary of the suggested BiAnnual replacement, you can understand my need for leverage. The filter in question is for an air dryer in the compressed air system on my Mack Semi. The diameter of the filter is 5 1/2" and I just don't have anything that size with me.

Having problems getting the old one off my '94 XJS. Thing I can't figure out is that Jaguar very clearly emphasizes that a new one should only be put on by HAND tightening (about 1/2 turn after contact made). So, why is it so damn hard to get them OFF by hand (assuming the PO followed directions)?

Was the previous owner by chance an Orangutan or Gorilla? I only ask because, after I graduated and moved out on my own was the first time I ran into this problem. My Dad had changed the oil last. I remember being ticked off that he did my car when he was doing his. I enjoyed working on my first car, not an xjs sadly. Well he musta STRONG ARMED the oil filter on unconsciously/passive aggressively because it only came loose 7/8th the way thru the first complete rotation of the screwdriver I had ran it through with. Damn thing looked like I had peeled an oil filter like an orange

Pretty good idea 👍 Although I didn't have anything I could wrap around it, it did give me two ideas. After those didn't work, I resorted to just refilling, warming the engine enough to loosen it and just sacrificed the small amount of oil that spilled out while replacing the filter. Lessons to be learned - always hand loosen the filter first Buy an oil filter wrench just in case. Thanks for the inspiration ✌️

I looked up this video and I started to try your method, although I had a different idea while tying it, cuz my ratchet strap I attempted to use kept slipping, I tried one more time with both hands and I actually got it with my hands, tried so hard the first few times my knuckles cracked. My idea though, was to wrap the strap around it nice and tight so it overlapped across the back and the strap would bind on its self with tension, and tie it to the closed end, and looped through the open end and use the wrench like a pry bar to push it thus spinning the filter, maybe next time I do my oil I’ll try it out but figured I’d leave this comment incase it helps someone else with gettin it off, even though I got it by hand after 5-6 attempts. Cheers. Ah next video below yours! Dude did a variation of using a strap! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q5ubfMmp2N-ulnk.html
