When teaching classes I would always tell my students to first buy a knot book, next, a good pair of sunglasses and third, buy a fly rod/reel set-up. Reveals the importance of the fly fishing process. Great podcast by some of the best in the business - thanks for all the valuable lessons guys!

Objective’s definitely change the longer you fly fish….for me, it was how the fly rod/casting works, then improvement of casting, then understanding water and where “should” fish be, then it’s entomology, then it’s whenever you place a cast, you anticipate a hit…while fishing is relaxing and enjoyable, Catching is a Natural High!

It’s the fish that I miss that stick with me the most and motivate me the most. I’ll usually come back to the same spot an hour or a day or so later to try fix my presentation. Another thing that I’ve found that helps me a lot is fishing the same technical water consistently because it helps me master the presentation for that type of water and I also learn where the fish are holding, how the weather affects them, time of day, the technique, the flies etc.

One of the things that bugs me about rods is that each manufacturer seems to have their own idea of what "weight" means. So a 3 weight in a cheap MaxCatch will be closer to a 3 weight in a Redington, but an Echo and a Sage will feel like a 2 weight. Or the Maxcatch and redington will act more like a 4 weight...I wish there were some standards for what a weight class should feel like across the board. if i catch a 1 pound trout on a 1 weight should it bend it right into U shape? Also the conventional rod system is pretty damn close to each other. A Medium is going to be a Medium in both abu garcia, and ugly stick. an ultra light is going to be very close.
