I’m an American that had the luck and honor to be raised in a Viet-American mixed home. My aunt and dad rented rooms in our house to Vietnamese families. Pho was popular in winter (Pensacola, Florida), so December-February. Cooking pho was a ritual. Who am I kidding, cooking everything was a ritual. As a kid, there was no choice, you eat, you help!!! I can make Vietnamese spring rolls in my sleep. For pho, my job was to roast the onions and dried spices over an open flame. Great memories! Great people!!!

Just a few years ago you could buy a large bowl if Pho in Socal for around $8 or $9. Let's not be surprised that its less than $16 now. We should all be outraged by these inflation prices.

As a Vietnamese who once been to the States, I did the stupidest thing which was to order the largest bowl. The beef and broth was great, but not enough side herbs.

Lol the notion that asian food should be cheap is comical when a serving of pasta runs you around 15-20$ when it’s not even half the effort of making pho especially from olive garden. Go eat your chef boyardee if you want cheap food bud

It's not a Michelin Starred restaurant. It's part of their Bib Gourmand, which is more about not being fancy, but good value and well made.

I respect the Bib Gourmand but it’s really surprising how many “food critics” or even reviewers don’t know the difference. Perhaps they do and just say it to add drama? Idk, either way, slightly sad. Lol No hate just funny is all.

IMO, pho bo in vn is just meh. The only one I loved was pho ga in Ha Noi, which was >$5 a bowl.

@@dragont8654Let's me ask you a question. You see a giant pot of the broth, and you said it's too much MSG. Ok try yourself a giant pot of broth then just add 1 teaspoon of MSG and pour it in to the bowl and taste it.

1$ in vietnam is like 20k or 25k, an average pho is 75k so the price here is pretty balanced cuz the price in US sometime too expensive for vietnamese people

pho 79 is no longer tasty. I don’t know when , I noticed that they added too much MSG to their broth . I had headaches and extreme throats after I ate their pho. I stopped eating there during my latest trip to So-Cal this past November . Try Phoholic . They opened a new location on Beach Blvd & near 22 freeway. Phoholic’s broth is clear, and little to NO MSG. I didn’t feel thirsty , nor had headaches after eating their pho. Their pho bowls are delicious!

@@user-lf3hh1wv9vc i respectfully disagree. My body is very sensitive to MSG. I can only report from my experience eating pho at both places. if you like Pho 79, then enjoy it! I'm going to eat Phoholic. Their pho didn't make me thirsty, and didn't give me headaches after I ate there.

Not to hate, but they don't have a Star they are considered a Bib Gourmand on the Michelin Guide, meaning they did get inspected and the inspector loved their food and thought it was a good value. Still a great achievement.

I've been there and honestly, it's pretty good but nothing mindblowing. The pho does have a distinct taste though; IMO it was a bit sweet. I wouldn't go out of my way for there, but Pho 79 does have it's own unique taste that's worth trying if you're up to it.

Sriracha, hoisin, fish sauce, soy sauce, seasoning sauce, beef paste, chili oil, chili paste, crushed peanuts are just some of the condiments and ingredients you can put in pho. But if the pho broth is immaculate, no condiments needed.

The initial taste of the broth I wasn’t blown away…it was good but not great…but the more I ate and slurped on that soup the better it tasted…at the end I was happy with the soup and the amount of meat…top 5 pho for me for sure…

Actually. The best pho I've ever tasted was in Atlanta Georgia. The place is called Dai Loi. One location in forest park and the 2nd location in Doraville. I've been to Vietnamese restaurants around the country. But none of them compared at all. The portions are generous and the flavor is great. And I know the owners personally. That they even let me eat at their personal table. Great people and customer service. I love the bom bo hue. And com dac biet. Also the bon MI tit nong. I don't know if I spelled them right. But they will know what you mean. And yes. I do know how to use chop sticks. 🙂 Foreign people like it when you embrace their culture.

Sometimes I wonder if the random Asian restaurants in the US that get Michelin Stars just get them because they don't have a good baseline for good Asian food so the first one they try that's decently competent blows their mind.
