Island Pacific, a Filipino grocery chain, just opened up Lake Forest, CA. We decided to tour our first ever Filipino supermarket. Watch us as we go down aisle by aisle, show you what the grocery store sells, and end the video by paying a visit to Philhouse where we order some favorite and classic Filipino dishes including chicken adobo, beef caldareta, and lechon. What did we think of the market and the food? Watch and subscribe to find out!

Magik Sarap is used in cooking for that Filipino version of umami taste. 😊 Salted egg (red egg) is usually paired tomatoes to balance off the saltiness of the egg. It can be the eaten on its own with rice (of course since rice is life in the PH) or as side dish to tocino, fried bangus/milkfish (get the one that is deboned), longanisa, grilled chicken or pork, butted shrimp. Yum! 😃

Tip: if the Caldereta is not specified as "beef," chances are it might be goat. Even in the US. I really recommend eating it hot and sizzling on a hot cast iron plate with lots of beer. If you can get moonshine, even better. Note: these will be made out of what on a cow will be the t-bone and porterhouse, and mutton has smaller bones. Despite its popularity as liquor/beer chow that some people in the rural areas may eat with their hands or just a spoon, depending on how you bite into each chunk that may end up with you swallowing a shard of the spine or even the rib. I hold it with chopsticks over a bowl of rice (to sop up any sauce) and bite a bit off each chunk at a time to avoid choking on a sharp bone shard. As for the rice vermicelli noodles: unless it's the saucy ones bordering on soupy, they're almost always cooked on the bland side then it's up the diners to adjust the saltiness with fish sauce. I have no idea why but it's always been that way. Not particularly fond of this dish either but the fish sauce really helps.

Excellent--thanks for all the pointers. We'll definitely keep in mind. We've had goat before and could tell the difference between that and meat. In this case, yeah it was labeled as beef caldereta. I could see the noodles being on the bland side and acting as a vessel for all the other flavorful dishes.

Thank you for your honest review!! A lot of filipino food are salty so you need a lot of rice to balance it out. We only have a few ingredients that we are using for seasoning (soy, salt, bagoong, vinegar, garlic, onion, ginger)so we can't really compete with other asian food like indian, thai and vietnamese who has tons of spice s and other flavorings. And FYI, filos don't really like spicy food. So to sum it up, filipino food is mostly, salty, sweet or sour. Oh that sauce for the chicken bbq is probably a mix of banana kechup and soy sauce❤️

I like the surprise MMMMMMM!!! Next time try something cooked in coconut cream. I also like Lengua... or tongue. Honestly, Lengua is the best cut of meat but the most under appreciated. Lengua cooked in mushroom sauce. This is something we got from the Spaniards. Lengua con Setas. Also try Lumpiang Sariwa, or Fresh lumpia. This is cooked bits of heart of palm with other veggies stuffed in a soft Lumpia wrapper, served with a sweet sauce topped with fresh minced garlic.
