ANTIQUE & VINTAGE RESELLERS' SHOPPING SPREE & MUSEUM TOUR!
It’s really great to meet another KZfaqr in the Northwest! Stephanie of ‪@ThriftingAdventures‬ and her sons greet us in Centralia, WA, a town stuffed with antique shops that also offers great vintage thrift stores. So it’s off to find bargains together!
We start at Centralia Square, the original antique mall in what’s become one of USA Today’s Top Ten American Antique Towns. We peruse everything from pheasant taxidermy and a brass store scale to Christmas collections and Shelley china, make a purchase and then head to the nearest thrift store-which is right across the street! Thrift stores in this area are good for online and real world vintage and antique resellers, where locally-based and mom-and-pop secondhand shops offer items that chain thrifts would’ve listed online themselves. We find a nice variety of well-priced items for show-and-tell (and to buy!)…names like Dorothy Thorpe, Sascha Brastoff and Brad Keeler, and items ranging from 1950s kitchen to pendant lamps find their way into our shopping carts. We even turn up a few things late in the day at the local flea market!
With kids in tow, a trip to the museum makes a good diversion we all can enjoy, and a chance for us collectors and resellers to learn from vignettes that show how all this cool stuff was part of real people’s lives! Barberania, logging and blacksmith shops, vintage railroad and even an iron lung help us identify things we find in the wild when antiquing, and a terrific display of Native American beadwork and basketry delight the eye. Special sightings include a funeral carriage, painted theater curtain, cigar store indian and a display of the devastation caused by the eruption of Mt. St. Helens-and the now collectible products enterprising people made from the ash fall.
We end up having a great time, lots of discoveries and a little taste of the Northwest’s Antique Trading Center that make Centralia a place that we will visit again. Next time, we’ll take our thrifting adventures to the town’s numerous antique malls and shops!
Here are more of the things we discover in this video:
Weiss pin, beaded ornament, clown decanter, Goebel Co-Boys, waterfall furniture, slat top trunk, 1930s juicer, Princess House lamps, Treasure Craft, Italian wood creche, Noritake nut bowl, bottle art, fruit labels, feather hat, steer horns, Folkmanis puppets, David Winter cottages, mahogany coffee table, Italian glass pedestal vase, Descoware, Expo ’74 guidebook, piggy banks, Lenox cat, kitchen scale, Franciscan Desert Rose, lusterware nut cups, Geisha Girl porcelain, nudie glass and shakers, Prayer Ladies, vintage mixer, Wagner stock pot, mid-century kitchen plastic, Keebler Elves, canister set, toothbrush holder, etc.

That lidless elephant would make an awesome succulent planter. We rented a house once that had a purple toilet, tub and sink. When we bought the house next door and moved, the owners remodeled and tore the purple fixtures out. They put them by the curb for the monthly city appliance and furniture pick up. I begged my husband to go get them and store them in our basement for our remodel. I was in love with them. It was a 2 wk argument until one morning they were gone and they were not in our basement. I looked lol. I just dig this channel so much. George is so selfless to share all that knowledge. I've learned so much about things I have, some I never realized were as old and valuable as they are. It pretty much all came from garage sales and thrifting. Thx George.

My parents liked auctions and garage sales. At one auction there was a stuffed pheasant up for auction. She wondered who was “the damn fool” (her words) who won the bid. It was my dad. The pheasant immediately went to the garage and probably went in their next garage sale.

Loved the museum visit. I have a pair of stainless steel engravings from the Northern Pacific's streamlined Internationals. Every passenger car was decorated with a variety of artworks. The coaches each had four etched stainless steel panels based on drawings of Northwest scenes by muralist Vincent Maragliotti. I thought about them last night when you were talking about the railroad history of the town. I also appreciate your emphasis on the quality of what you buy...no chips or scratches. One of my mentors told me the same thing you mentioned..."You make your money when you buy, not when you sell." Bill

That lamp that is inside your booth with the white globe, is that hobnail? I have a white hob nail chandelier that I need to put up on Ebay that has 5 hobnail hurricanes with the globes under them and a center globe. Next, the ornaments, I have probably 20 of those, some of them I replaced some of the ornamentation on them, I had to search high and low for authentic supplies to do so. A few of them I had to use modern supplies. I have had them up on Poshmark, but I should put them up on Ebay? When my Dad, who was an electrician, passed away in April, he left a shop FULL of supplies from the 70’s and 80’s, and a lot of the lighting used to repair older lighting. Brand new old stock Bakelite lamp parts and chain kits for chandeliers and such. He was also given vintage fixtures when he put in newer modern fixtures, so I went through and gathered what I could to put up on EBay to help my step-mom defray the cost of living without income from my Dad. I have been struggling to inventory them and get them up on my Ebay. Sounds like it may be profitable to do so?

Hi!! I think it's a great idea to put those parts on eBay, that's the kind of thing that can go high to the person who really needs it. My milk glass lamp is not hobnail, would be better if it was. I also think with Christmas coming that maybe Etsy for the ornaments?

You know seeing the iron lung there I wanted to tell you that I worked in a long term care and rehab centre in Vancouver BC in 93 to 98. It was an old facility that originally had tuberculosis patients on one end and polio patients way on the other side of facility One older guy still preferred using an iron lung rather than being on a portable ventilator. Can u believe it??? I found it so disturbing right out of a horror movie I was a Recreation therapist for 30 plus years
@TheAntiqueNomad
@TheAntiqueNomad 3 жыл бұрын
That's really interesting! I wouldn't have thought the iron lung would still have been an option then. I imagine you'd be in high demand today

I was a recreation therapist and I think you r thinking respirating therapist. I retired in 2018 and I’m grateful I’m not in healthcare right now... it would be really tough right now wearing a mask all day long and all the precautions/ restrictions in hospital 🏥

I'm fairly certain I once found a 'sombero chip & dip' just like the Treasure Craft one you've showed but it was by Metlox. Was this shape & design common in the '50s or '60s?
@TheAntiqueNomad
@TheAntiqueNomad 3 жыл бұрын
Metlox and TC did virtually the same sombrero. When Metlox fell apart due to divorce in the family in 1989, TC was the only one left making them and expanded the line.

I know that they are not made by native Americans but what do you know about Smookin dolls from Missoula, Montana. I have two ...the small family of three..and my kids aren’t into my collections so I would just like to sell them at a fare price to someone who will like them. I would be glad for you to find the right people so if you want to consign them, I am for it........by the way I was one of those kids who were part of the trials for the Salk lvacine. Got the water thing, but among this first to get the real stuff. Incidentally, Jonas Salk refuses to take money for his great contribution to humanity. Sadly I don’t think this will happen if we find a shot against the corona virus.y.

I didn’t mean water, I meant polio.....as a kid in the early 50s I had a friend named Larry who limped because he had had polio. Such a horrible time and I remember all of my friends and I had to rest during the California summers. I am grateful my parents cared enough to be a part of this experiment.

Polio was such a scourge in my family, I'm glad you and they were brave enough to be in the trials! I think you're referring to skookum dolls? Please send photos to me at theantiquenomad@gmail.com

I apologize if it seems that way, certainly not my intent. "Ghetto" in that town is mostly white folks, I lived there a long time and that's their name for it. I shouldn't presume that saying that out of that local context is appropriate though.
