Shopping Like a Local in TIRANA, ALBANIA's Markets

In this video, we explore local markets in Tirana, Albania. First, we visit Pazari i Ri, also known as the New Bazaar. This large, open-air market is located on the east side of Tirana in one of the oldest and most historical residential neighborhoods in Tirana.
Vendors at Pazari i Ri sell fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts and dried fruit, herbs, olives, olive oil, honey, raki, tobacco, home goods, handicrafts, antiques, flowers, plants, and more. The market was originally built in 1939. It was renovated in 1959 and again more recently in 2017.
Surrounding the market there are many restaurants, coffee shops, bars, meat and fish shops, and other small businesses. There are also many apartment buildings surrounding the New Bazaar.
Nearby Pazari i Ri is the Mosque of Mahmud Agha Kokonozi, also called the New Bazaar Mosque. It is the oldest mosque in Tirana and was built in 1750 during the Ottoman era. It is one of the few mosques that survived the communist dictatorship under Enver Hoxha’s communist regime.
It is best to visit Pazari i Ri in the morning if you want to see the market at its liveliest with more vendors open. However, it is a fantastic place to visit at any time of day as there is always something going on in the area.
After visiting Pazari i Ri, we take you to some local produce markets where we have been shopping for fruits and veggies, not too far from Ali Demi, the neighborhood where we were staying.

You look like bloody arnold schwarzenegger in those sunnies mate. just found you both on here, were coming to Albania very soon and your videos are great, refreshing to see people actually get involved with locals and make an effort to learn the language etc instead of being an ignorant tourist. We did Tirana and Prizren about 3 weeks back, you are making me miss it and you are eating at our favourite place for those meaty sausagey things. I just wanted to give a shout out for you guys for being bold against people telling you that you should have kids as me and my partner are travellers and we have had those same conversations with people we've met around the world, the thing is we get everything we want out of life from travelling together ☺️ besides I have cats, they are what I get soppy over 😁

Thanks for your comment! Honestly, we've had that conversation a lot too, both in the US and abroad. It's always nice to meet like-minded people like you who understand. There are a lot of us out there! We love cats too 😻 We have a couple of pet sits with cats lined up for this year that we're looking forward to. How did you like Prizren? We haven't been to Kosovo yet.

@@Twocantravel a Cuban guy in a bar in Havana gave us a lecture once about not having kids and asked us what do we spend our money on instead, we pointed out we were sat in the hot sunshine of Cuba drinking rum with him in the depths of British winter back home 😁. Prizren is really quite pretty and interesting, there's still burnt out and damaged Serbian homes and churches there from a rampage that happened in 2004. There's the ruins of a Fort on the hill overlooking Prizren and you get great panoramic views from up there and if you take the track behind the Fort you get a walk through the woods and back to Prizren by the side of a river that has some nice little restaurants along it. Call to prayer is very loud in Prizren though as there's 40 odd mosques going off at sunrise 😁.

I think a lot of people just don't consider the option of not having kids so it seems really foreign to them. It's always nice to escape winter 😁 Prizren sounds really interesting and beautiful! 40 mosques going off at once sounds epic! There's so much more in this region of the world that we want to explore.

Great video! 😃 We're in Tirana from Friday for a week. I can't wait to see it. Great to hear you speaking a bit of Albanian. Ive been trying to learn via phone apps for the last year. I'm so looking forward to trying it out on real people! 😃 Will you still be around or are you heading on?

Thank you, David! We've been trying our best to speak Albanian! Most people do speak English, but it's always worth trying at least the basics. That's cool you've been studying the language! What app are you using? We are beginning a trip around Albania in the next couple of days, but we'll likely come back to Tirana again soon. We really like it here! @@Twocantravel Initially I used Ling but now I'm using Bluebird Languages, which is far better and I can learn whilst driving too. It's a bit more expensive, but I think it's worth it. 😃

Great video. Thank you for bringing Tirana and shopping at Pazari i ri so lively and so real. Miss it badly and I may not be able to go this summer. If you're still in Albania and plan to stay there look out for fruits and veggies during summer time and fall. The best is yet to come. A few more days in June and you can enjoy we call "ancient figs" big, sweet and juicy figs and mulberries. The best thing is to go to villagers houses especially in mountains and eat fruits and veggies that grow in their gardens ripped under the sun. It is a heavenly taste.

Thank you for such a lovely comment! The produce in Albania is incredible! It's so fresh and free from pesticides and other chemicals. Those figs sound delicious! It seems that many people in Albania grow their own produce 😍 We hope you get the chance to travel back to Albania this summer!

Your videos about Tirana are close to being exceptional many other videos about Albania I don't know they just I don't get the flavor of it but with yours really good thank you. Have you ever rented a car in Albania? Have you ever stayed in a hotel?

Thank you so much, what an awesome comment to receive :) We haven't rented a car in Albania (yet) but we've met other travelers who have. Two women told us they rented their car through a German company called Sunny Cars and it includes insurance. There seem to be a lot of local car rental places in Tirana and other cities. We haven't stayed hotels but we've stayed in some guest houses (family homes with some rooms you can stay in) but we found them through Airbnb. They have been great!

I’m currently in Tirana. Where was the location of your local produce stand, please? Looks amazing and has more variety than I see in my neighborhood (I’m about 2 blocks from the House of Leaves museum.) Thank you!

If you cross the canal near the Tanners Bridge there are lots of produce stands in that area and towards the Ali Demi neighborhood. I think the one in the video was next to this coffee shop: goo.gl/maps/TTsAohrQYN2cqAvy5
