I am 5' 4" (163cm) with a 28" inseam. This motorcycle is a 1996 Suzuki DR350SE with a 36" seat height. Forks have been slid up the triple clamps by about .75", but on paper, I am still far too short for this machine.
I have been riding it for about 5 months now in this form, and over 3500 miles, and have never had a problem with the seat height on the road. I am an intermediate rider with 5 years experience, so this is not something a beginner should do.
I have decided not to lower the suspension, but instead will just shave the seat by 1". I hope this video helps someone else who is vertically challenged, and think they can't hop on a dual sport because of it.
Update: I have since upgraded the seat to a 1" lower Seat Concepts seat. That 1" made all the difference in allowing me to at least tiptoe with both feet. I would consider this an essential mod for short riders, and highly recommend it for all DR350s. I can now ride for 3 hours straight in relative comfort.

Your video will help people. I'm 5'2", with a 27" inseam. I ride a Kawasaki Versys with a Speedy Gonzales link, a DR650 in the factory low setting, and a BMW R1100R with the seat on the middle setting. I have been riding for almost ten years. It takes some determination, resourcefulness, and time, but now it's no big deal to ride most bikes. Guys much taller than me will watch me get on bikes at bike shows and dealerships; some of them are sizing me up, to see if they could deal with the bike. Doesn't bother me.

That was inspiring.. I can kinda tiptoe with both feet on my bike and it can be challenging at times, more so in slow speed maneuvers cause i cant use my feet for stability if something goes wrong.. Im glad to see others trying to overcome similar issues. My bike's clutch lever broke yesterday thanks to a slow speed fall while i was trying to learn how to do tight U-turns and i felt really discouraged.. I have a lot to learn to improve my riding and It my height is something extra i need to overcome as well.. I was feeling really down today but this video and the comments below made my day. Thanks!

You will drop your bike time and time again. I still do it all the time. You just have to pick it right back up and keep riding. I used to get discouraged, but I don't even bat an eye anymore. Best thing you can do is get real handguards with a metal backbone if it's a dual sport, so you never have to break a lever again. Also, when in doubt, throttle out! The bike naturally wants to fall over when you are leaned over doing slow speed maneuvers. More throttle is the only way to stand it back up.

At 5'8" with a 29" inseam I was almost that bad on my first 08 KLR 650. I was on tippy toes and I dropped the bike 3X the first two weeks on it. I told myself, "Never again." It was stolen a few years later and moved to a vStrom DL650. I sold it after a few years and went to buy a 2022 RE Himilayan, but I walked out with an incredible 2018 Camo KLR 650 w/ 3402mi, over $3K of parts upgrades, extended warranty, maitenance journal, original parts, and extra parts. It has been a true blessing. Thank you, JESUS! Its about an inch shorter and I've only dropped it once during the first six months of ownership. The first KLR made me learn ninja slow speed balancing skills.

This dude is a fucking BOSS. I'm short at 5'8" and modern 250's are just too damn tall. started on a super sherpa 250 kawi and it was just right. klr 650's and dr 650's are just too damn tall to feel comfy on. dropping them turns them into cruisers. then here I am riding a ninja 250 after years on liter bikes and wish they made links to make it taller lol. Really, mfgr's should make a bike platform that takes different engines, then make it accept different engines. like a 125-400 cc beginner sportbike platform, a 600-1000 cc superbike platform. same for dual sports. make that thing modular!

I'm a girl who is 5'3'' with a 28'' inseam and I was able to get off/on a klr 650 with a 35'' seat height. Because I'm a girl I don't have the strength that a guy might have while maneuvering the bike around. As a background I grew up riding dirt bikes and I always had to ride tall bikes my entire life. I had to climb onto a tall dirt bike without a kickstand and uphill, imagine that. I had to push off from a tree lol. My first dirt bike was at 5 years old. I'm here to tell you guys that if I can do it you can. If you park on pavement you are fine. Just don't park it on top of gravel, mud, grass, or a steep incline. In either of these situations you won't be able to push off from the ground with one foot. As long as you see any of those things just keep the bike moving until you find even ground. If you do end up messing up and parking it in those things, be prepared to get off the bike and walk it; just be smart and careful. To get back on it with the kickstand down, just climb onto the bike and lean off one side with your hips to put the kickstand up. This part is kinda sketchy and takes practice. Putting your foot down and putting the kickstand up should be done in one motion. Push off from the ground again if you don't succeed and try again. It doesn't take special shoes to hook the kickstand with your left foot it just takes practice. I can do it in my huge stiff boots that you could walk on the moon with. Last, give it throttle and go.

@not tryna argue but If you need to take it on technical trails then you want something as lightweight as possible and if you can, something with a low seat height. This can happen by shaving the seat down (just make sure there are no pressure points afterwards). You don't want a KLR as a short person through technical trails unless its an occasional water crossing, light gravel and dirt. Simply because if you are on uneven terrain then you will probably fall. There are short women who do it, but they are experienced and know what they are doing.

@not tryna argue but i would look into the ktm 250 and 400, as well as the drz400. If you are taller than me they are both great lightweight options that will take you through the trails because they weight 100 lbs less than my cb500x but can go just as fast. I didn't get one because they were too tall for me, i used to be able to ride very tall bikes but now i have two post op hips and back.

If your a dirt road rider, street rider, and mild trail rider you can ride anything having to lean a bit when you stop. From 40 years of biking on cruisers, race bikes, and dual sports the seat height is very important if you off road more than just semi smooth dirt roads and fields. I have fallen many times over the years in creeks, side of hills, large ruts and climbing steep hills where i had to maneuver around trees, rocks etc where when I had to lean that direction at the time and I could not touch the ground. You either have to slide off the seat and hang on for life it seams to continue up the incline. If you think you can turn the opposite direction then you slid off the seat quickly to avoid hitting something you really do not have time to slide to the other side of the bike and place you other leg down. Slowing down to have time you lose momentum which is a real factor when off roading on steep trails. Now as a young man I had to have the biggest and the fastest dirt bike / dual sport. I have own all of them. 650 and down. My favorite take a road trip bike was the KLR650 with one tooth up front sprocket for freeway speeds. That made it suck off road having to clutch out on a hill or our of a bowl or creek bottom. I ended up carrying 2 front sprocket sizes. Worked great. 14k miles a year on that bike. I fell over allot in tight turns because I could not touch the ground. Lowered the bike 2 inches and fell half as much. Allot more confidence off road. Xrl650 Blew a new one up running 65 mph at the 500 mile mark on the trip, Used allot of oil also. Bike had 2500 miles on it when started the trip. Honda replaced the entire bike, They changed the sprockets before giving me the bike. Drove it 3000 miles on one trip after putting 1000 miles on it, Ran 70 / 75 MPH everywhere. Had to add a little oil every two gas tanks used. Much better bike then KLR off road in every condition yet sucked on highways and was wound tight even regeared. Was very tired all the time on the freeway. it was also lowered 2 inches, fell over allot until lowered then about half as much. Had a DR650 better than Honda on road. Not near a KLR on road, Better than KLR off road not near the Honda off road. At 2600 miles Suzuki had to repair the engine due to a cam bearing oiling issue. Told me I could not drive it 70 all day like that even with synthetic oil. They regeared it also killing to off roading on slow steep climbs helping on freeway. Was not lowered but lighter and a touch shorter then the other two stock bikes. fell yes but not as much. I now will go back to the KLR650 lowered and the seat cut 1 inch and carry two front sprockets it is an easy change if I get into harder off road enviroment. In out group we have never had the bigger dual sports get through the trails. To tall and to heavy to climb goat trails etc. I am 6ft tall with 32 in inseam and weigh 240. The best dual sport I have ever ridden was a xr400r with baja kit and the xr650 engine custom balanced for freeway riding. Was 3 inches lower then KLR or XRL. Never fell off road on the same trails yet had to carry two sprockets to be able to run 70 and 75 all day. Started running a touch of two cycle oil on long freeway trips and never scorched a Honda cylinder again. 100 miles at a time running 70 and 75 no issue and running a touch of quick silver in the gas stopped the honda from using oil. All bikes were jetted also for Honda's all come to lean to meet California crap. All bikes had better air filter and better exhaust which also help cool them a bit. So the moral of the story is it all depends on how you ride and what you expect the bike to do. We do not jump them just climb steep, ride hard on the roads and get stuck in the mud once in while. If they made a 600 engine on a 230 or 250 frame with 6 speeds I would buy it. Keep the wind in your face and close you mouth unless you like june bugs.

I had to narrow my options pretty much just to the Yamaha XTs until I found the DR on craigslist for a great deal and figured I'd give it a shot. I learned quickly that riding a tall bike is magnitudes easier than trying to stand up stationary. Once you get moving, the machine takes over.

DR650 is an inch shorter and can have the seat shaved by almost an inch by your dealer. At that point it sits at 34 inches which you either live with or lower the suspension. I get why people don't like the idea of lowering suspension but the bike's got over 10 inches of ground clearance and suspension travel, won't hurt to drop it a little bit and give you more confidence.

I've never actually sat on an R6, but I'm sure it would be fine. Any street bike should be no problem for most people. They're low to the ground, so all have short seat heights when compared to any dirt bike. The only thing I'd worry about is the horizontal reach to the handlebars for short riders.

@SamChou
@SamChou 5 жыл бұрын
That is somewhat true. But I cannot stress this enough: being short is only a problem from 0mph to 1mph. At all other speeds, your inseam is irrelevant, and a skilled short rider should be able to handle a motorcycle as well as a skilled tall rider. And at 0-1mph, in traffic, you are not likely to be in mortal danger. You are definitely more likely to drop your bike at a stop light though.

Pretty much the only answer is the Yamaha XT225, XT250, or TW200. Those are pretty much the only street legal dual sports with very low seat heights. But don't sell yourself short. There's always lowering links for pretty much any bike. If there's a will, there's a way. Build confidence, and then make whatever bike you want fit you. BUT, if you're a beginner, stick with a lower bike and get your skills up before riding a tall bike.

Just fine, actually. She actually helps the cause, since the weight of a passenger sags the suspension even more, and allows me put one foot almost flat on the ground.

I like to see you do that with a 500 pounds plus bike like a BMW dual sport with a 33" seat height. My 12 year old nephew can do wheelies on your toy bike.

Some people pass tic-tacs as energy pills and you would be one of those who would pay for them. The title says "Tall Dual Sport Seat Height" What he's riding isn't tall nor heavy. There is a video of a very short guy man handling a BMW F1200GS and that's impressive because that's a heavy and very tall seat height dual sport bike.

+Lilox Luv If the description is right, that DR350SE has a 36 inch seat height. Not exactly the shortest bike.

+Lilox Luv I think I know what video you're talking about. He gets the bike moving, throws a leg over and immediately does a huge wheelie? I was impresssed by that, too. But that's no comparison at all to the DR350. I didn't say it was a heavy bike, I said it was tall. The 96 DR350SE has a 36.2" seat height on the specifications, and I measured mine at 36". By comparison, the standard R1200GS has a 33" seat height, and 35.2" in ADV trim, according to wikipedia. The "very tall seat height" bike you provided as an example is still shorter than my "toy bike". Still, there is no comparison, as they are completely different bikes with completely different handling characteristics, as the 1200 is 500lbs, and 350 is 270lbs. But I'm glad other people found this video to be helpful.

Say what you will, but I've logged 15,000+ miles on this bike in every terrain, and am having a great time. I do drop it sometimes, but I pick it up and keep going. Timber! ...Braaap!
