Short Rows are used to create triangles or wedges within your knitting. They shape everything from bust darts to ear flaps. Basically, a Short Row is just that: a row that you don’t knit to the end of the needle. There are lots of ways to turn your work partway through a row, but our favorite is called a Wrap + Turn (wrp-t). This simple method prevents holes along the Short Rows and works well with many different stitch patterns.
04:32 Bonus Clip: How to Pick Up A Purl Wrap On The Knit Side
When working in the round, you may encounter a stitch that was wrapped on the purl (or wrong) side and needs to be picked up on the knit (or right) side. Here's how to pick up a purl wrap on the knit side...
Work up to the wrapped stitch.
Use the tip of the right needle to pick up the wrap, inserting the needle from front to back. Place the wrap onto the left needle. Note: If necessary, nudge the wrap so it is after the next stitch on the needle.
Next, slip the first sitch knitwise, then slip the wrap purlwise. Insert the tip of the left needle into the front legs of those two slipped stitches. Wrap your working yarn around the right needle to knit the two together.
The wrap will fall to the wrong side of your fabric... Nice!

Very helpful. I watched four or so videos and phototutorials on wrap and turn. This was the most helpful and clear. I foudn picking up the wraps to be especially challenging to learn. I made a test swatch where I wrapped and turned several short rows in a row so I could practice repeatedly picking up the wraps on the knit side only. I replayed that part of the video (around the 2:55 mark) over and over again as I got the hang of it. Only then did I try the same approach to learn picking up wrapped stitches from the purl side. Before that I had been trying to learn both at once and was just getting confused. I think I got it now. Thanks for the video!

Thank you for the great video. I have a question on a circular short row for the neckline. Where does the short row starts? In other words, where does the first cast on stitch for the neckline go? Is it at center back or front? Or can this be any shoulder split point if you’re working on raglan?
@PurlSoho

Wow! I am about to start a pair of 2 at a time toe up socks that employs a wrap and turn heel. It's the first time I'm doing this. ( I have made 2 at a time cuff down using a regular heel.) and this is a wonderful explanation of this type of heel. I'm anxious to learn this and your concise and complete explanation is perfect. Thank you! Why do some videos recommend using stitch markers? Also, is the second part of it (lifting the stitch below and knitting them together) called unwrapping the stitch?
@PurlSoho
@PurlSoho 2 жыл бұрын
We're so glad this tutorial was helpful! Some videos might recommend using stitch markers to be extra sure you remember which stitch you wrapped, but we've found it's pretty easy to tell just from looking. In answer to your second question, we just call that "knitting a wrapped stitch with its wrap," but your idea is great!

I’ve seen some videos where the wrap is done (on the knit side) starting with yarn forward, then slip, then yarn back. Is there a difference?
@PurlSoho
@PurlSoho 4 жыл бұрын
Not a huge difference as it creates the wrap in the same fashion, but we prefer this way because your working yarn is in the correct position once you turn the work. Try both and see which you prefer, there's really no wrong way! Thanks for writing in!

Thank you for a very good tutorial. I am knitting a raglan sweater (in the round) with a moss stitch pattern, and would like to raise the back of the sweater using short rows. Is there any way to knit short rows without disrupting the moss stitch pattern? I can´t seem to find a way to make it work, because the short row turns seems to disrupt the pattern no matter what I do! Any tips would be very welcome :) NB: The moss stitch pattern = *Round 1 & 2: K1, P1 til end of the round. Round 3 & 4:: P1, K1 til end of the round*.

On the third step, when you slip the stitch back to the LEFT needle from the right, does it matter if you're inserting the left needle in front or behind the stitch? Example, when you slipped the stitch back, on the knitside 0:53 you went into the back... Slipping back, on the purl side 2:06 you went into the front side/leg of the stitch. Is it twisting the stitch, if you slip it back into the stitch's front or back? Or does the stitch look the same no matter which side/leg you slip back with?
@PurlSoho
@PurlSoho 3 жыл бұрын
Hi! We think there may be a little camera work tricking these two moments, and we apologize for that! At both time stamps, Laura is slipping both stitches purl-wise, meaning she slips the stitch from right to left, without twisting. The way the camera focuses in on those moments shows her needle going behind the first stitch and in front of the second stitch, but in both cases, the stitches are slipped purl-wise. It's important to slip purl-wise for this technique because your aiming to to be as indiscreet as possible, and twisting your stitches would only highlight the turn. That first slipped stitch looks twisted, but it's just the angle of her needles. We hope this helps - and thanks for writing in!

(Starting every new row from the same end) So not semetrical stocking st like it's supposed to be since it alternates from knit to purl. Is the pattern wrong or am I just missing something? Am I supposed to turn the work again and knit across to start the next row? Pattern doesn't say anything about that. Neither do the yt tutorials I've been watching. I’m really struggling with purling a wrap with its stitch. I keep getting extra stitches and I think it’s because I’m only bringing the needle through the stitch and not the wrap, so the wrap remains and adds a stitch onto the needles. But it’s just such an awkward movement. Any tips?
@PurlSoho
@PurlSoho 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jay! It might help to think of purling the wrap with its stitch just like a p2tog. The working yarn must be brought through both loops before you can let the stitch fall off the left needle. It's definitely a slightly awkward motion, since the wrap sits lower down than the stitch, so I'd recommend taking it slowly and making sure the working yarn goes all the way through the wrap as well. Hope this helps!
