It depends on the amp. All these are fine basses but the Hofner is a must have for me, very light and the sound has real depth.

They all sound awesome. Every time I watch a video with short scale basses, I'm reminded why I want one. I prefer the feel of a regular scale bass, but you just don't get the same round and resonant tone when you increase the scale length. Owning a short scale could be an awesome studio tool.

I thought #5 was the Danelectro, and of course I was right. I play them almost exclusively. Initially it was because they're light (and short-scale), and I was having back and wrist trouble my heavy jazz bass. But I love the sound, most of all. #4 sounded almost like a Danelectro to me. I've actually been thinking of getting a Mustang, so maybe I will.

My favorites were the Danelectro and the Gretsch. The Danelectro took me by surprise. I didn't expect the lipstick pickups to sound that full. the Gibson and Fender sounded thin and rubber bandy to my ear. The Hofner sounded like a Hofner. Kind of the Tofu of bass tone.

Great video, Julia. Thanks, Thomann people. Best value for money: Gretch Junior (it's a great great electric bass , very versatile for/with different kinds of music, specially ROCK, man). If you are a Cream hard fan (mr. Jack Bruce did this bass famous), you're a professional musician or need a bass with those features: light, simple, reliable, small, easy to play, with great tone, (...and specially if you have money to spend. It's the most expensive bass of the list). Answer: Gibson SG Bass; it's a fucking classic, a lifelong bass. If you are a Garage-Punk music & 60's fashion big fan, you like Pop/Rock with vintage Fuzz effects or similar, ultralight, simple and funny Danelectro Longhorn is your choice. If you're a big The Beatles fan, you like classical 60s Pop or Rhythm & Blues, you want a light, vintage and very easy to play bass, Hofner Ignition Bass, definitely. And finally if you love Fender instruments brand, (a logical thing, man), you are an usual guitarrist and want to play a bass too, or play often long-scale bass and want to play a good short-scale, besides you have a little saved money but don't want a very big, heavy and expensive JazzBass or Precission: the small and beautiful Fender Mustang bass is the best election, man. Great tone and versatile. Choose short-scale or lose. Fun guaranteed.

Currently I use an Ampeg PortoFlex 500 w/matching 1x15 and Horn. I’ve also used it with my Hartke HA7000 Head and SWR Goliath 4x10 Cab. I like the Ampeg Rig better. I bought the First Series Amp and the Cab pictures showed a long Port in front but didn’t come that way. I had a lot of speaker buffeting so I called Ampeg and was told I needed to buy their matching 2x4 Cab and run them together? So I spoke to their Tech Department and was told to put 2 4” round Ports in the back which I did and it sounds Great! I’ve worked Small to Large Venues and ave never needed anything bigger!

@@TheNalo14 Sealed cabs tend to sound better with short scale basses because shorter scale length means bigger, softer low end, and sealed bass cabs have a tighter, more focused low end, so they generally balance well and compliment each other.

Nice comparison. The Dan sounded the most like a True 34" full-scale-bass - it had those upper-mid's overtones. Has anyone played the Sire U5, Sterling Stingray or G&L Fallout???

My thoughts exactly. I was surprised that I liked the longhorn, I thought it would sound thin

Same here. I thought the SG sounded thin. Didn't expect that.

Hi Julia .. Some of us guitarists have issues with normal bass scales (small hand spread syndrome haha). My bass of choice is is a Gibson Triumph Bass (Short Scale) from 1972. Maybe I'm biased as my main guitar is a Gibson Les Paul Recording from 1973 and they are a good matched pair that I can DI if I want to 🙂

Fun video! I love my Guild Starfire II but from this mix I liked the Gibson as it seems like it would cut through the mix well. Your choice is great for warmth. Thanks!

I liked the sound of the dano best, but the Gibson had a very prominent 2nd harmonic and it would be a fun and useful tool to get a different sound depending on the song

I play a Hofner Club Bass, it’s my favorite for its sound and because it’s easy on my arthritic fingers!

For the last year or so, I've been playing Sterling by Music Man short scale Stingray basses. The tone and playability are great. I've had trouble finding correctly-sized hard cases though.

I myselve have a Rockbass Corvette short scale. Unfortunately it`s my only stringed instrument with defective electronics as the neck pickup isn`t working and I didn`t find out whether it`s the wiring or a pot. From the played basses in the video. I liked the sound of the Höffner and the Danelectro the most, but I wonder if the the othe basses would sound better in a band context.

I do play short scale basses and own 3, the Hofner you played, a Squire Vintage Modified Jaguar and an Ibanez TMB. They all have a bit of something they bring to what I am playing. The Hofner would be my favorite of them all.

The Höfner Violin Bass (and the Höfner Club Bass too ) looks the best and has been for x decades. I also think his sound is the coolest. Höfner rocks the world.>>>>>> For all friends of the Hofner Violin Bass...must listen to this: Chris Rea, CD 2003, Hofner Blue Notes !!!
