I learned of this production through Aron Kincaid's memoirs, the film is very well made and follows the story closely - I prefer it to the theatrical release of Heart of Darkness.

Reading my way through the Conrad short stories and read The Secret Sharer today. Good to see this version and David Soul in the lead part.

"... Our hands met gropingly, lingered united in a steady, motionless clasp for a second... No word was breathed by either of us when they separated." This heartbreaking moment was turned into a plain handshake. Mehh... Nice shortfilm tho

"«I won’t be there to see you go,» I began with an effort. «The rest ... I only hope I have understood, too.» «You have. From first to last»-and for the first time there seemed to be a faltering, something strained in his whisper. He caught hold of my arm, but the ringing of the supper bell made me start. He didn’t though; he only released his grip." They even cut short this beautiful moment. Guess they considered the original story a bit too ambiguous and didn't want to risk audiences thinking Leggatt and the captain shared feelings for each other.
