Hi!
This is actually just a shorter version of the Short Turns Demystified video I released earlier this winter. Here is the link to that video: • Short Turns Demystified . I had a request for this video as I posted a link in the longer version and actually got some views. So I decided to post this video in case some people preferred to watch a slightly shorter version. Note that I actually made a new voice over at the section where I comment on the demo itself so you might want to watch it for that reason.
I’m basing this video on a technique I learned in Austria as a kid a long time ago. I call it the “Pre Turn Concept”. The reason for the name is that you make a fake turn in the opposite direction just before turning into the fall line. It’s a bit similar to a two footed release technique were you ease off your edges and tip your feet and skis into the new turn at the same time you pivot them around. However, my approach here is not from a standstill which I find to be some-what difficult but instead from moving forwards across the hill in a traverse.
First you go across the slope in a traverse and make two fake turn initiations by easing off your edges and skidding downhill only to straight away set an edge and force your downward movement to a stop. Extend up and jump back on track. On your third initiation, instead of returning to your traverse as in the previous initiations, you go for a real turn and pivot your skis into the fall line. You can do this as many times as you want. Then start making turns on your first turn initiations and then tighten your turns until you are linking short turns.
Best thing is to watch the video all the way through as there is important information from start to finish. And watch it many times as there is a lot of information. I’m also doing the video without a script so it’s more like a conversation between YOU and me than a straight forward lecture on the subject.
Please push the like button if you feel it was worth watching, subscribe and leave comments. I try to be active and answer as many of them as I can.
reg
Tom

Nice to see an excuse for the good old style. Then it was also called "easy Christiany" - this is the simplest and most useful technique of turning on parallel skis, which is suitable in different cases: virgin snow, steep slope, bumps, etc.

In short, I'm saying you should down-unweigh in short turns as well. The up-unweighing is a more natural (though counterproductive) movements than the counterintuitive, though more efficient, down-unweighing movement, and thus you really want to eliminate it from your skiing to focus on your form.
@gu5907
@gu5907 4 жыл бұрын
The short brushed turn has just the same elements as the modern carve turn. The only difference is the delay of edge angles from the outside ski. I really hate the word pivot because it implies active lower body rotation; the rotation of lower limbs is a BYPRODUCT of inside leg tipping, inside foot retraction, and inside foot pressing towards the stance boot (tension on medial muscles of your free foot, setting up proper technique). If it's not coming from these movements, the turn falls apart. Which is why I prefer therm brushed carve. You can at any point in the turn go from a brushed to a modern carve by engaging the outside foot which is also how the pros use it to time where in the turn they want pressure on the outside ski.

Down-unweighing, I like this term. It covers the essentials of the release. Didn't realise up-unweighing was a term, I should watch more racing on old ski geometries.

Short turn means finishing one turn and initiate another turn without interrupting. Thanks for reminding me this sample rule. Just interested to know how to figure out the estimated minimum craving turn for a specific pair of skis under ideal condition. Thanks.

Thank you. This was a very informative video. I liked what you said about the difference between carved and brushed turns and then highlighting the need for some other movement (bump or pre-turn) to generate unweighting when going at slower speed. In the demo section you showed the edge set and then said "extension" and I could clearly see the extension. In the latter part of the demo you were setting the edge to unweight and then it looked to me like there was no extension, only flexion with your unweighting to pivot into the new turn. Am I understanding this correctly? Please keep posting!

always interesting video. do you have a video explain the use of dorsi plantar flexion during the turns? im little bit confused in this hide movement , some teacher say to push big toe during the turn on the outside ski other say the opposite: to push big toe up for close ankle and feel the heel pressure .
@Triggerboy62
@Triggerboy62 4 ай бұрын
As I mentioned in an other comment, watch my new A-frame video. Nothing about dorsiflexion but if you pull your inside foot backwards in the turn the dorsiflexion increases. Depending on the boot stiffness. Anyway, always try to keep pressure with the shins of the boots. That is how you transfer power to the skis from your legs and upper body. Use stiff boots and lean forward during the pressure phase. Also watch my How to carve low video. Ask me more questions, I will try to help you. T

Thank YOU for watching. That edge rolling drill, or turn sequence, is to die for. I am using 155cm womens SL skis so they are really turning well but find a very flat well groomed slope and start out in the fall line to catch speed. Then start slowly to tip your feet from side to side. As you start turning more frequent, lower your position so that you can extend out to the side and flex through the transition. Hope this helps. We are not using any particular brand... my pants, the black ones with the white stripe, are Wölkl branded. I still use these as my main pants even if I have a new pair of Tony Sailer which are top of the line and to be used only when not working or racing. I also use a pair of Halti. I only buy ski pants on sale. The jackets are team wear. Cheers, Tom

You are doing an extension to release up move then twist the feet to pivot the skis? Is this the technique that World Cup slalom skiers strive to use to create short turns? They flex to release they don’t extend to release.
@zipmanify
@zipmanify 5 жыл бұрын
Triggerboy62 We see extension releases and pivots with hard late edge sets (windshield wiper) Z turns all over the mountain by terminal intermediates. Up movements disconnect the skier from the snow and makes them have to pivot and jamb the skis for speed control. Rounded brushed turns needs to be the goal. Flex to release with early edge change and tipping in the top of the arc should be the goal.
@zipmanify
@zipmanify 5 жыл бұрын
Triggerboy62 I’m disagreeing with you, extension releases disconnects the skis at the top of the turn so you are left with the only outcome, a late edge set. Is that desirable? Not in my book. We want speed control as early as possible which is in the top of the turn, not at the bottom. In other words, I don’t think demonstrating an extension release, like you are, is going to lead students to early tipping and shaped brushed turns. Bumps are another example where we should be using flexing releases not extension releases.

Triggerboy62 you note pitfalls with extension releases...which we see all over the mountain, windshield wiper Z shaped turns. It is pervasive in my opinion. The steeper the terrain, the worse the outcome for the student. What are the benefits that tell you it is better to build a skier’s No 1 go to turn technique by ingraining the muscle memory movements of extension releases, as apposed to flexing to release?

I started the video. I do not agree with the first statements, so I stopped watching. You state that the meaning of short turn is that you do not lose momentum. I say that the most effective way to reduce momentum is the short turn. In other words short turns are the best turns that make it possible to control our speed. By finishing the turn earlier we can gain speed and by finishing it later we can lose speed. We can make both kind of short turns without any problem. We always have the option of starting a new short turn during the old short turn. I think, that when an expert skier, like you, tries to explain ski turns for intermediate skiers , it is necessary to understand exactly what is the most important element and what is the next and so on. Only by making up a priority order of the elements can you really explain effectively. So i ask you, what do you think about the need of a priority order of the elements? What is the real difference, the most important difference, between medium wide turns and short turns? I have been thinking now a long time about these matters, I can tell you. How about this statement: "Release by tipping your skis into the turn and pivot during the float." A tipping (edging) of the skis will increase the pressure on the skis, not unload it. I think you wanted to communicate the following: "Unload the skis during the tipping (edging of the skis)". Or maybe: "Edging and unloading of the skies should be done together simultaneously". This is one of the complicated things one must do for a good short turn. later in the video: "up-unweighting by extension " you say. I say the opposite. During the extension of the knees you increase the pressure on the skis. It is a common misunderstanding you state here but if you think about it you will understand. The meaning of the knee extension is something else. By this you can help your body to move into the direction of the fall-line, this is the body projection.
