💬 LESSON DESCRIPTION:
Carsten, a student in one of my courses, reached out yesterday asking for advice on how to get started reading sheet music for guitar from jazz guitar lead sheets.
I do have some lessons on reading chord changes, but I realized that I haven't talked about reading melodies from guitar lead sheets yet in any of my videos.
So I decided to make this week's lesson on exactly that because I have a really effective method for it.
I didn't read a single note of sheet music until about ten years into playing guitar.
Once I realized that it was important to me it felt like it was too late.
I had to find a way to "catch up"... So I did.
I used the approach in this lesson, and it worked!
I'm totally okay with calling this technique a shortcut (because it's so much faster to get off the ground with it than other methods), but really it's just focused, targeted, and efficient.
If you've ever been frustrated by reading sheet music for guitar or by reading guitar lead sheets, then this lesson is for you.
Leave me a comment and a thumbs up if this video helpful.
Thanks for watching, and I hope you have a great rest of your week :)

This approach makes a lot of sense. Appears to be a good compliment to just memorizing notes on the fret board. Thanks again for another great video

Hi Jared. This is just great. Thanks so much. I've been able to understand the treble clef and the notes but Isolating a region on the guitar 🎸 is so helpful. Thanks a ton and Merry Christmas to you

Thank you Jared, never quite got to the point of wanting to try. Now you have really made life interesting, i’m not into improvisation or lead guitar but this is a lot more into the direction I like to go. Thanks.

This reminded me. It was a a few weeks ago I started in on All The Things You are, trying to figure out where I wanted to start the arpeggio improv. I wasn't being real strict with it, if I hit a flat 9, whatever, guess I'll make a diminished out of it. Anyway, I had listened to multiple versions because I like to do that and I ended up hitting notes that are actually in the songs melody without that intention haha. I knew right away and thought that was pretty cool.

Wow. I never thought to add limitations. I relate to what you said about starting to read music for guitar later down the line. Luckily I have experience reading for saxophone from highschool so I’m not going in totally blind. I was dreading the thought of having to go through a bunch of volumes just to have clarity. But this seems to be just the solution I needed. I’m sure at some point I’ll end up going back. I would like to go through a modern method for guitar which requires multiple positions. But for now this will do. Thank you so much!

Looks like a great system. There should be a law that requires any guitar teacher to reveal in the 1st lesson each octave of C major for the 1st 12 frets from lowest to highest and where each note is duplicated on other strings and frets. Like your reading system here this would go a long way to reduce confusion for anyone learning guitar. Thanks for posting.

So how do I know to use the G on the 4th String when there are other G’s on your scheme? Although you eliminated options near the neck and up the fretboard, you still have more than one note to choose what note to play or start with?
@soundguitar
@soundguitar Жыл бұрын
Thanks for asking Mark. There's only one note option per pitch within any one octave. So there's only one guitar note option for every possible note location on the sheet music. The lowest G would be below the music staff, the next G up would be the second line on the staff, the next G up would be the note on the top of the staff. Of course it takes time to get used to which note represents which fret on the guitar, but the principle remains that there's one option per note location on the staff. I hope that helps, but please let me know if I can help with any further clarification. -Jared

Thanks Jared! There are more than one option for each note even with this truncated version. How do I know I’m choosing/starting on the right note?

I think maybe you are confusing note names with pitches. Although note names are repeated, each note listed is a separate pitch. For instance the D note on the A string at fret 5 is an octave lower than the D note on the G string string at fret 7. Same note name, but their pitch is an octave apart. On the written music the lower D would be written in the space below the bottom line of the score. The higher D would be written on the second line from the top of the score. Maybe a simpler explanation is, if you play all those notes sequentially you will find you are playing a chromatic scale, and every note will sound a different pitch. Hope this helps.

This is really good, but you assume that we can look at a note on the staff in the key and instantly know that it’s, for example, an F#, or a G, or whatever. From the title of the video I thought that was what you were going to teach. Could you please do a video on how to identify notes on the staff, in different keys? I realize that knowledge may be so fundamental that it’s too far beneath your target audience, but after 50 some odd years of playing I can assure you that many of us guitarists don’t know how to do this.
