Shortening a leather belt from the other end

This belt needed shortening by about 3 inches, but I didn't just cut off the end and punch new holes. Instead, I started at the buckle end and cut the stitching, skived the leather and re-stitched. I used leather chisels to create the thread holes and contact cement to hold the leather in place while stitching. The needles are very blunt-ended and are meant for leather work. The thread is waxed and can be melted at the end to finish the stitch.
Here's a few tools I used in this video...
Razor Blades - amzn.to/31mpHQg
Razor Blade Holder/Scraper - amzn.to/371mISH
Leather Chisels - amzn.to/2Iu9GiH
Leather Hole Punches - amzn.to/2EXPBQU
Leather Stitching Needles (10 pack) - amzn.to/2X5Eobj
Waxed Thread - amzn.to/2WsziBt
Soft-Faced Hammer - amzn.to/2K5SeUL
Contact Cement - amzn.to/2Xx0Iay

OMG! Thank you. I have never done any leather work before. A while ago, I bought a bunch of nice too-long leather belts on a really good going-out-of-business sale figuring that there must be a way to shorten them. Some of them are beautiful vintage tooled leather, some are high quality plain belts. I bought most of the stuff in the comments. I shortened one of them and fixed some stitching on a leather jacket too. It was a fun and satisfying weekend activity. I am looking forward to doing the rest of the belts. I feel like I've gained a cool life skill.

Size 38 or above, sorry 🤷‍♂️ Same with pants. You can find anything easily up to like 52, but never below 32

you have to glue before making making the holes
@PatonHaus
@PatonHaus 6 ай бұрын
I find it’s better to put the glue on after punching the holes so that you don’t get glue on your punching tools.

How come once you take the buckle off you just don't kiss it goodbye? and use heavy duty/after market ones? and just punch two holes on both sides and install snaps?

I would have just bought a new belt at that point, no sense in paying to replace everything separately.

Isn't easier if he just makes an additional hole next to the existing ones?
@PatonHaus
@PatonHaus Жыл бұрын
That approach will work for many belts but in my case I wanted to maintain that end of the belt. You’ll notice this belt didn’t have a loop for holding the excess belt end, which is also why I didn’t want to punch extra holes as that would only make that end of the belt longer. I hope that makes sense. Thanks for watching!

What is it you're rubbing on the thread after you cut/burn it?
@PatonHaus
@PatonHaus 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Daniel, I’m just squishing the melted thread with the end of the lighter. The end of the thread becomes a ball when it’s melted and squishing it back into the hole helps to avoid it catching on anything or irritating the skin or clothing.

It is necessary to use both glue and also sew it up or will using glue alone suffice?
@PatonHaus
@PatonHaus 5 жыл бұрын
I added the glue as a temporary measure to hold the leather together while sewing. You should definitely sew the leather, but can likely skip the glue if you don't have any.

Bought a Levi leather belt at Kohl's a couple days a go, then realized it was too long, so cut off the end, now it is fraying, looking to seal it good - your way would have been much better. I saw how cheaply this Levi leather belt is made, paid $32.00, would not buy a Levi belt again. Want quality and this isn't it. The belt selection at Kohl's wasn't that great.
