As a retired airline pilot , I flew everything from the 727, S80, DC10, 757,767,777, and 787. The 757 was my favorite for just that reason, the power. This Finnish plane has Rolls Royce engines rated at 44,000 lbs of thrust each, it was just like a thoroughbred horse, itching to run

The 757 is capable of very short takeoffs if the pilot goes to max power. It has (deliberately) very similar systems and power to the larger 767 with essentially the same wing, giving it far lighter wing loading than most airliners. Also, from the sound of it, there was probably a pretty stiff headwind which can help reduce your takeoff roll quite a bit.
@Al-ud8qi
@Al-ud8qi 8 жыл бұрын
+Owen DeLong They have very different wings, the 757 wing is much smaller. 125' wing span vs 156' wing span is not essentially the same wing. Wing area is also much greater on the 767.

By going to Google earth I was able to get a pretty close estimate of the takeoff roll as 700m. This was based on the runway markings seen in the video. Then by googling the Boeing 757-200 I checked out it's Rated take off distances. These vary considerably based on loads, altitude etc. ( I used sea level) It gave 990 M as the dist req'd. THis certainly does make 700m a very short take off dist. for this aircraft.

The 757 is a fantastic aircraft. Their is no airbus aircraft that even compares to it in performance and mission capability. I have flown full 757s into Orange County California, and Jackson Wyoming both of which are very short. JAC is also at 6400 feet above sea level. It can fly from Denver to Honolulu or Chicago to Indianapolis. It Climbs like a homesick angel, cruises all day at M.82, and can land and stop on a slick runway on a dime with change left over. It handles well on one engine too. I will miss flying the 757. UAL Senior Capt.

I flew 757-200's out of SNA many times where we use to use a special take-off procedure for noise abatement. We would spool the engines up at the end of the runway than release the brakes and reach rotation speed very quickly and climb at a steep angle to gain altitude to cause less noise on the folks below us. That 757 would climb like a home sick angel like the old Boeing-720B . The Boeing 720B was a great performing aircraft also which I enjoyed flying. The 757 is a great handling airplane easy to land and will land short when required. (I'm not going unless it is a Boeing)
@MODECHARLIE
@MODECHARLIE 9 жыл бұрын
Bill McCandless No, engines are more likely to fail at maximum stress, like during the takeoff where it is essential to get the aircraft off the runway expeditiously. That throttle back is "climb thrust", a predetermined setting (that is usually less than max setting) of the throttles that it can continue climbing leisurely and safely on its route (You don't floor the accelerator of your car to drive right up to the top of a hill). There is no longer any hurry to get off the runway anymore, at about 1500 feet they just power back and climb away...
@nigahiga6400
@nigahiga6400 9 жыл бұрын
Bill McCandless The throttle back saves fuel and reduces wear and tear on the engine. A jet engine constantly being run 90-95% of full power will not last as long as engine that is run around 85%. The difference is significant. Part of the reason the early A340-200 and -300 series aircraft are expensive to fly was because the CFMs didn't give enough power, requiring higher thrust settings that both increased fuel consumption and spiked the maintenance bill.
@MeyersCTR

I used to do this all the time with 757s doing maintenance test flights. When the airplane has 86,000 lbs of thrust and the empty weight is 94,000 lbs total weight with minimum fuel might be 120,000 lbs takeoff's were VERY short.

Oh my, incredible lift. The 57 is easily the most amazing single aisle aircraft made with a beauty in the air of a graceful, athletic long-necked bird. I suppose Boeing looks at the 737-900 as taking the place of the 757, but I disagree, they should look at a 757 MAX with ceramics and new GE90 type power plants. The range on this puppy and comfort in flight are superior to the A320 and 737 families while using the same length runways

Several years ago I was on a Delta 757 flight out of Reagan Natl. Airport to Atlanta--and after pulling onto the main runway and holding for several seconds we started the takeoff roll which I noticed to being an extremely brisk acceleration more than usual and we rotated and completely airborne with the mains off the ground at the exact moment we passed the 3000 ft marker--the # 3 sign zipping by the wing and I thought to myself "well at least now I know what a 757 can do"...I remember the old days back when Delta & Eastern L1011's and American DC10s used to go in and out of Laguardia all day long-it's 2 runways being 7000ft and usually considered to be a little short for those giants but we never had any problems at all from what I remember back then when I took some of those flights...also, the same thing with Kahului airport in Maui which was even shorter back then but yet those same aircraft would go in and out daily and I have been on a few Delta L1011's landing there...sure do miss them too-I loved those birds and the sound of those Rolls Royce RB211's ...they would lull you to sleep easily on those long flights. :)
@Nfarce
@Nfarce 10 жыл бұрын
Those L-1011s also cruised nose high very prominently, and I remember how comfortable it was and the flight attendants having to muscle those food carts up the isle while in cruise... back when they actually fed you hot meals on domestic flights in coach. Last one I flew on (Delta) was into Denver/Stapleton and it was a rough landing after a major snowstorm. We were the first to land after our assigned runway was plowed and I remember feeling the aircraft slide sideways and the thrust reversers kicking up what appeared to be dirty snow mixed with pebbles over the wings out of my window seat over the wing (I could actually hear crackling of something hitting the side of the lower fuselage...so no telling what went in engines 1 and 3). The captain actually apologized for the scary landing. Hell of a memory to finish my last L-1011 flight!
@Dino0469
@Dino0469 10 жыл бұрын
Nfarce Since you mentioned about the nose high attitude of the Tri-Star in cruise--it's true and I remember back when I would fly out West from ATL to SAN or LAX in the 80's and 90's and at cruising altitude if I happened to be in a window seat on starboard side-which is where I usually sat on Westbound flights and looking North, I would often see one zip by in the distance headed in the opposite direction with that distinctive nose up attitude while in level flight with the contrails behind it...other aircraft do it at cruising altitude as well but not quite to the extreme of the L1011....as I have stated in the past, my all-time fav airliner was the L1011 with the 727 following and lastly being the early DC9 models prior to the MD80's starting with the DC9-10 on thru to the DC9-50. Those planes had so much character not to mention the noisy, smokey takeoffs and had much more character than the new generation 737-300-- 757/767/777's and Airbus aircraft of today all being new generation airliners. I loved the L1011 because it was very roomy, comfy in coach and easy to walk about and stretch without it becoming too crowded in the aisles or rear galley...it had so many lavatories in the rear-aft all lined up side by side wall to wall, long wait times in line to use the toilet was quite rare. I remember in the center lav that if you placed your ear against the back wall you could hear that center RB211 screaming with the S duct intake & engine being just feet away on the other side of that wall...I miss that old plane--it was awesome,with it's Rolls Royce engines it was easy to recognize by sound without actually seeing it, from inside the terminal you could hear it on startup even if you didn't see it... a unique plane and had very beautiful lines in it's design and to me, it was more attractive than it's competitor the DC10 of which was a great airliner but not as much to me as the Tristar...

That is a scary airport (was on holiday there). The runway was way too short and to risky once, so they decided to stretch it. But because there was no space left on the cliffs, they founded the runway extension on concrete columns, reaching out. This gives you kind of an aircraft carrier feeling.

WROOOOOONG! This takeoff lasted 22secs. On a DL flight from KMCO-KRSW in late August, 1987 on a B-727-200, we didn't use but a mere 1/3 of the runway. One third--and that was a jet which having swept wings sharper than the later gen. 757 &. 767 aircraft, just floated off the runway in approx. 16 secs. A few years later, in a B-767-300 from KBDL-KMCO in November, 1989, our takeoff was a mere SIXTEEN seconds from the start of full power, to wheels off tarmac. Now that was a shorty. Plus,the following month, I took a similar early morning flight from the same airport to KATL on a DL B-757-200, and the time was the same. 16 seconds. I'm not sure how this type of performance is possible, but dayumn! It is really impressive!!😳👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 😮Good video, juss the same.

757s are known for its short takeoff/landing distance and high lift in the thin air. Most of the airlines use them in high altitude airports. It is also the only narrow-body aircraft with the "heavy" call sign in ATC because of that wide wing span.

I flew into Madeira in 1981, before the extension of the runway into the ocean. Now, that is when it was fun to see planes take off and land on the short runway. On landing, just before hitting the runway, air currents would make the plane swing to one side and then the other. As soon the plane hit the ground, the pilot would reverse the engines, so that you felt your body pressing hard against the seat. There were two points at which the planes could exit the runway. While waiting to leave Madeira, I spent half a day at the airport watching planes land. Some successfully stopping before the first exit point from the runway, others having to take the second exit, but still far from the end of the runway and the welcoming ocean. It was after a serious accident where a plane failed to stop in time, that the runway was extended into the ocean, permitting the biggest planes to land.

One thing about the 757, its thrust to weigh ratio is high so unlike 737, which rolls further and rate of climb is slower, the 757 can stand on its tail and power on out. I am sure this is not the only stop for this flight and number of passengers and fuel make a difference. Even so, UPS has a few of them and loaded up and do short take offs all the time out of Ontario California airport. Awesome aircraft and wish Boeing would make more.

If you have air speed at V1, what 160? you can rotate. Maintaining airspeed also is dependent on the additional lift you can get with a headwind. Either way, your airspeed at V1 is everything. It means you either have sufficient lift for takeoff or you trim the nose down until you do. As if I knew what the hell I was talking about. I learned on a 1942 Aronca. An old Volkswagon with wings.

In the 1980s I was flying the B-757 and flew into St. Thomas, VI on numerous occasions. The runway at that time was 4500 feet long with a hill (about 500 feet) off the end of the runway. We used max power for takeoffs and always had a full load of passengers but not a lot of fuel because we were only going to St. Croix. It was normal to be off the ground in less than 2500 feet and we climbed at 25 degrees body angle as opposed to the normal 15 degrees and we would be about 1500 feet over the hill. Prior to that in the 727-200 we would do a left turn after departure and fly to the north of the hill, not near as much fun. The 757 was a fantastic plane with superior power to weight.

As I understand it from a Northwest pilot who is no longer flying, the standard takeoff on a 757 in most airlines is less than maximum. Occasionally they are asked to make a full power takeoff, which necessitates getting air traffic control approval due to the climb rate which at most gross weights pegs the rate of climb indicator. I do not know the takeoff roll for a true maximum effort take off in a 757. They do however takeoff spectacularly.

Airframe is a gem. However, I'm basing my estimation on the use of the displaced threshold. Beyond that, you can add the runway markings. The first set of hash marks indicates 500 feet, the solid blocks, 1000 feet and each set beyond that is 500 feet.

In fact the explanation is quite simple. I was told by a Finnair pilot that when flying from Madeira to Helsinky it is not possible to take off from Funchal with enough fuel to get directly there. So... the take off from Funchal with a minimum of fuel, then land at Porto Santo, load enough fuel to get to Helsinky and then take off easily, because Porto santo has a longer runway.

+Nuke Gaming TV Yep the 737NGs are slugs and ground hogs. Because of the engines and wing design it will never match the short field performance of the 757. And it only even remotely comes close to this performance when they are extremely weight restricted. Ala the 737-800 Short Field Performance equipped flying for GOL Brazil out of Santos Dumont Airport. The best replacement will be the A321 Neo LR with the larger and more powerful Geared Turbofans, approaching the mid to high 30k lbs of thrust per engine.

I think the whole Boeing sucks, Airbus rules and vice versa thing is silly and childish. They are both great manufacturers for what it is albeit with a different vision. Being that I'm unbiased and enjoy both manufacturers equally I can say without hesitation that the 737 and that includes the new MAX series is still NOT an adequate replacement for the 900-1000 757 airframes still in service that will need to be replaced within the next 5-10 years. The older 5 to 600 757s have already been retired and scrapped after 28-34 years of service. A high powered NEO LR will be the type airlines go for unless Boeing decides to re-engine and modernize the 757 putting it back into production as a MAX model or NG type. And by all accounts thus far no matter the pressure and lobbying from AAL, UAL & DAL they are holding their ground and sticking by their 737MAX or 787-8 business model. Boeing has made it clear they are willing to concede this market to Airbus as their pride and ignorance of the 737 product as a one size fits all solution has prevented them from understanding that the 757 market is not a niche one. A 752NG or MAX would blow the A321NEO LR away in every facet.
