I think it's better to say that these tiles don't form a pattern that starts over.

Clarification: It's not guaranteed that every possible "supertile" is repeated infinitely. Only some supertiles have to be repeated infinitely. Some combinations might not show up at all, because they don't admit a tiling of the plane. Others might show up finite number of times (which would be very interesting)

When you look at the algorithm of how to construct the whole plane it's easy to see: Every finite configuration that appears at least once will appear an infinite time.

It's a triskaidecagon (13 sides)

@@ThimsNire no, a triscadecagon is made of 27.5 degree triangles. The Hat is made of 60 and 30 degree triangles.

This short video shows what seems to have been Dave Smith's state of knowledge after he discovered this "hat", cut out numerous hats from paper, and found that he could put ever so many hats together. This doesn't amount to a proof though. Why not show us the H_8 and H_7 from Smith et al's paper, and show how *they* tile? That would then go some way to proving that hats tile the whole plane.
