The most serene and achingly beautiful prelude and fugue in the set

The ending to this one always gets me like no other, particularly the fugue

@@cameronshapiro6322 It could be that we're wondering, specifically, whether it is the (A) ending of the prelude, or (B) the ending of the fugue, that gets you like no other? Or (C) both? An A, B, or C multiple choice situation, indeed.

Would the composer be happy with this performance? Good recording, if this is actually him. I was surprised that Keith Jarret did such a nice job with this one (incidently).

Keith Jarrett and Svjatoslav Richter recordings are both recommendable, sound quality is nearer to our time.

The start is surprisingly very Chopinian.

I find it impressionist, a la Debussy.

@@manukvardanyan94 I can see what you mean, there is some metrical similarity. I, for my part, was thinking the atmospheres of Debussy´s preludes and images. Normally Shostakovich was a prisoner of Bachian counterpoint and soviet dictatorship but here (plus in prelude no 23) he has some calm, sublime moments.

@@texwiller4029 …in the same tonality with Chopin’s nocturne .. yeah there is also can be closeness with Debussy’s world… indeed this is so unusual for Shostakovich
