no i think we were all surprised when a youth orchestra played this well. I mean I'm in a very prestigious youth orchestra who has performed at the royal albert hall and is looking to reclaim it's national title at Birmingham symphony hall tomorrow and I have to say this sounds EXTREMELY professional.

SHOSTAKOVICH IS THE MOST BADASS COMPOSER!!!!! Just discovered him in spring of 2020. He was decades ahead of his time. If I were to hear his symphonies (10, 7, 5, 8, 11, 12) for the very first time BUT didn't know who composed them OR WHEN, I'd think they were for an epic action movie filmed after 1980. No other classical composer compares to him. His use of heavy strings is spellbinding. SHOSTY ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gustavo Dudamel brings out the very best of this highly talented group. His conducting evokes the elegiac and dramatic qualities, with which Shostakovitch imbues in this particular epic symphony; in my opinion, one of the composer's masterpieces, played here with both solemnity and passion. It's just astounding and very noteworthy, all in all, also a joy to listen to.

I'm going to break my own rules. I don't believe in the 'best' or 'greatest' but for me this the greatest symphony yet written, & this the best performance I've heard. Shostakovitch sees EVERYTHING. Love, beauty, grandeur, horror, cruelty, everything that is in this world. And it's driving him insane. The section starting about 12.40 (I wish I knew the technical terms for his genius, but whatever techniques he uses are always subservient to his music, his humanity) develops at 17 minutes into the most distraught, compassionate piece of music I've ever heard. It has me in tears. Literally stunning. To paraphrase: Dmitri Will Tear You Apart Again.

I play this nearly every day, sometimes more than once. It never fails to inspire and awe me at the great talent displayed here, as well as the genius of the work. Shostakovitch held his displeasure with Stalin inside all his life, then this exploded forth at the news of Stalin's death. Never have I been so overjoyed to celebrate someone's death so much along with the composer. And Stalin did it to himself. Imagine, even his doctors were terrified to touch him as he lay gasping for breath on the floor. A fitting end, as Shostakovitch certainly lets the brass and woodwinds blow out their breaths in happiness at his passing.

I listen to this music again and I think that what I hear is absolute musical perfection, which has not been equaled since Shostakovich wrote this symphony. When I listen to this recording of Shostakovich's Tenth Symphony, I not only hear the music, but I experience the whole history of the XXth century, with all its atrocities, which are still being repeated in the XXI century.

Yes, Gene, yes, yes, yes !! We know that this is a result of a wonderful project, called El Sistema, where maestro Dudamel came from. Unfortunately, however, this project, supported by the Venezuelan government, probably won't last. Theres a smell of coup in the air, and, as ever in Latin America, the local elite and high-middle class will take power. And, also as ever, will cut social costs, in the name of "financial equilibrium", which means, more money to the riches.

At 125 plus committed and competent musicians (with a good amount above the usual compliment of strings) the second movement, taken at the extreme end of the tempo indication, sounds even more menacing, hectoring and impactful than usual. Overwhelming barely begins to describe it and the rest of the performance as well. Bravo to the orchestra and Dudamel. Simply a composition of great breadth and depth of feeling/emotions (and of high craft, of which DSCH was most proud)...in the tradition of someone whose work he admired deeply, Mahler.
