In this episode of TFBTV's SHOT Show 2018 Range Day Coverage, Miles meets with Eric from Suppressed Weapon Systems.
Eric shows us their offering of monolithic suppressed barrels providing light integrally suppressed rifles for both AR style and bold action platforms. The barrels allow for a very quiet single stamp setup.

In theory you could truly free float the barrel and have the gas tube collect gasses from the suppressor instead of a hole in the barrel

I don't think the pressure would be great enough unless the bolt is very light.

Someone should do this to stand out in a crowded field of similar integrally suppressed rifles. For some rifles this could be a great way to delay cycling for reduced pressure. Suppressor delayed blowback, for example. No need for rollers or other implements, since gas won't work the action until after the bullet leaves the barrel and the gas reaches the rear of the suppressor, at which point it will also be a gentler pressure. However, such a gas system might be ammo-sensitive and need some sort of adjustable or self-adjusting gas port at the back of the suppressor for reliable cycling with a wide variety of ammunition. That's an issue for a civilian market but not a big deal to the military market. I'm not sure how much difference it would make to an AR. But it could make a for a very lightweight rifle that cycles reliably with a lightweight bolt. I'm not sure what the effect on recoil would be, perhaps less since there would be less reciprocating mass. Since it doesn't reciprocate until after the bullet exits the barrel, it may be easier to shoot accurately. It would also be higher velocity at the same barrel length, since no gas is bled off of the barrel to operate the gas system. It would operate entirely on residual gas pressure. Theoretically it would also make the rifle quieter to the shooter. Reduced pressures cycling the gun for much reduced pressure of gases exiting the ejection port. While the higher pressure in the barrel means a little more pressure upon the bullet exiting the suppressor, the pressure acting upon the action would reduce pressure of gas exiting the suppressor, since it would use energy and slow down the gas.

I don’t think you understand material science. Its possible there is some truth to this. The manufacturing process could create some grain boundary deformation, which would increase strength. Audi has a hollow crank shaft in their RS3, and they claim it’s lighter weight and stronger than a conventional crankshaft. Do you also think they don’t understand basic material science?
@CrankAddict
@CrankAddict 2 жыл бұрын
@@theronmatthews5369 I agree with the the grain boundary deformation to a degree. That's what dimple dies do. The deformation of the metal helps to recover some of the strength lost when holes are drilled. There is a balance in that process somewhere, and large holes will definitely shift that balance. As for Audi's crankshaft, you cannot compare a reciprocating mass that spins at 7000 rpm to a static load.

KAMOMI it's probably not as far out of your range as you might think. If you can afford a custom bolt rifle, you won't spend much more than you would on one with a traditional match grade barrel. I got one from them with a krieger barrel and it was cheaper than i could have done a regular build on a krieger barrel and bought a thread on suppressor. Thats not including the benefit of a lighter setup as well.

The its not stronger, they put holes in I beams cause they don't affect the tensile strength enough to make a difference but it cits down on weight, less material always means less strength.

Eric is the man being interviewed. He corrected himself to a different reply stating the same. "Eric Tonkin 3 weeks ago You are correct. After about 15 interviews in an hour i have a hard time remembering my name. A solid barrel is stronger than a fluted barrel. What i was trying to say was the holes reduce weight but still keep the barrel ridged and maintain strength, not make it stronger. "
@marineninga
@marineninga 4 жыл бұрын
@@frankc3690 But by lightening the I beams, the building is lighter overall which means the beams themselves don't have to carry much weight making it overall stronger than having a more mass being held by more strength. The biggest limitation in how high a sky scrapper can go is the strength of the materials, so if you can't make the beam stronger you make it lighter.

So if you have a round like supersonic or so, would it be weakened when gases expand? Rifles like "de lisle" had an integrated suppressor. How is the effect on the bullet?
@frankc8985
@frankc8985 4 жыл бұрын
Most integrals up to this point like the de lisle have port holes drilled into the barrel, sometimes only a few inches beyond the chamber. This allows gas and powder to escape causing a drastic loss in velocity. Our barrels are not ported in any way. Our design is designed and capable of shooting full power ammunition with almost zero velocity loss, depending on the cartridge being used and your chosen overall barrel length.

Is it rifled after all the milling? Because milling a rifled barrel enlarges the ID and decreases accuracy.
@suppressedweaponsystems6799
@suppressedweaponsystems6799 6 жыл бұрын
In some cases you are correct if milling is done improperly to a barrel it can reduce its accuracy. Our process has been refined to not effect the bore. We have air gauged the bore before and after our milling process with no deviation from the factory bore sizes. We stand behind our sub MOA guarantee.

I wonder if there is a lot of baffle erosion. Especially with the shorter 10.5" guns they were talking about. In the suppressor world, baffles are made of stronger Stellite and Inconnel. These are 4150 at best. Which is fine for hot head-on 10.5" muzzle blasts, I'd imagine baffles would not live a fraction of the barrel's life.
@erictonkin1388
@erictonkin1388 6 жыл бұрын
The barrels are made from 416SS. Yes the blast chamber and the first 2 baffles will see some erosion after 1000's of rounds. We have shot several barrels out in our 556 platform to test this exact thing. After about 8000 rounds (mostly Full auto fire) the throat and muzzle will be losing rifling and accuracy will start to fade. This is when most people say the barrel will be "shot out". We only saw a loss of 1dB at the muzzle and the ear at this point. But then we Pulled the barrel and replaced it. The tube is the serialized portion so no paperwork is necessary with a barrel replacement. We also have a rental rifle at a local range in Houston with over 15K rounds through it and still going (300blk). 8" barrel with almost no signs of baffle erosion and its darn near a smooth bore. Moral of the story- the barrel will wear our way before the baffles will.

That’s not why they put big holes in I beams on airplanes. That’s just to save weight and still maintain strength. They would be stronger without them. All said your barrel would be stronger in every direction if the lightening cuts were not there. But that’s the beauty of engineering. You figure out what you expect the stresses will be and design to that with a buffer. I’m sure your barrel is plenty strong. Little things like that just bug me. I get tired of hearing people say fluted barrels are Stronger. For any given barrel diameter. Say .920 a fluted vs a non fluted of the same profile. The non fluted will be stronger every Time. Ill probably get one of your bolt gun barrels though. 😁

@@frankc8985 what if there's no device, what if the barrel suppresses itself?
@frankc8985
@frankc8985 4 жыл бұрын
@@teddygrizz The "device" would be the titanium suppressor tube. Without the tube, the barrel is REALLY loud due to the aggressive muzzle break. You must have something containing the gasses coming out of the muzzle. The tube is that thing. The tube captures all the expanding gasses. Therefore, suppression. Therefore, NFA item.

What happens after the barrel wears out? Do you have to purchase a brand new integrally suppressed barrel and therefore pay another $200 tax stamp and wait another five months to hear back from the ATF?
@frankc8985
@frankc8985 4 жыл бұрын
You do not have to register a new suppressor when re barreling a rifle. The suppressor tube is the registered suppressor. As long as barrel lengths are consistent with tube length, you simply pull the burnt barrel, install a new one and slide the tube over the new barrel. New barrel, same suppressor. Just gunsmithing work, no new tax stamp required.

They came to us mid day while the event is going on. Not to mention you CAN hear the difference between the unsuppressed/suppressed rifles on the line verses ours, just listen.
