I do really really believe the only way to enjoy this game long term is to just experiment constantly. It's a stressful game if you put expectations on yourself. But if you try wacky things and try to make them work, it's never not fun.

Yay! Mechabellum. First game i think overlords should have gone on the left flank, grab artillery for them. Smash those frontline tanks. Or go for a meme and worm him, would have been fun. Edit: yeah, play for fun, not just to win. I like trying to give advice, but memes are always where it's at, no matter how effective they are. Edit 2: second game, getting the fire badgers was a good move. When the opponent has invested that much into chaff, getting multiple types of chaff clear out if worthwhile. Means flanks, counters, and forced respecs won't screw you over.
