Shotguns for SHTF
Here Brother Kennerd and myself do some shooting and discussion for uses, advantages, disadvantages, and skills for shotguns especially in a defensive scenario or a theoretical SHTF scenario.

I doo about 50% or more of my training with shotguns. When you are limited to 5 rounds in your rifles you can get your shotgun in battery so much quicker. A determined man can do a hell of a lot with a 12 gauge pump and a couple big ass knives than most people think.

All the gun you need to kill anything in North America. 12 Gauge ammo is heavy if you have to move from one location to another frequently on foot. Easier to carry 500 plus 22LR rounds if you have a Ruger 10/22 carbine for small game hunting and survival.

Some Bird loads BB - #4 (especially in Tungsten ) will kill a human quickly out to 30 yards. Tungsten is 40 percent denser then lead. the hell you can't. It wont pierce soft armor and buckshot wont pierce ONE sidewall of a tire, windshield or car door beyond 10m and wont do so at 5m if the angle of the shot is much less than 90 degrees. The shotshells are heavy, bulky, fragile, expensive, awkward to carry , slow to reload. TRY getting 7 hits per second with a pump 12 and buck shot like Micelek can do with an AR, and the autorifle can be SILENCED, with subsonic ammo. You cant take down conceal the shotgun, nor use it effectively with one arm. Given a riot barrel and normal 00 buck, there's head and shoulder sized holes in the pattern at a mere 30m, so you can be centered on a cover-user and never touch him, Ditto if he's head on prone to you and wearing a helmet. NOBODY is much good with $1+ per shot 12 ga slugs. If you were inclined to spend that much money, youd have a silenced AR with a 22 unit, saving you $1 per shot. You have no intention of using slugs swiftly, I know that cause if you were, youd use the rifle instead. Your blasts will call in every enemy within a mile radius and tha'ts likely to be dozens of them. Anyone can tell the difference between a shotgun blast and a rifle's crack. It says "I'm right here and I"m stupid/easy pickings"

Watching the news has got me casting 2 days a week and reloading the other 5. Last week i did 12g foster and pellet slugs, this week it's 00 buckshot. I went ahead and ordered a new mold for shits and grins. A .730 caliber pellet slug weighing in at 1 3/8oz in pure lead. I'll put em in 3"chedditte clear hulls with 30gr Longshot, bpi brushwad, nitro card, slug, roll crimp. Basically the Same recipe for 00 buck with a clear overshot card. If that big pellet slug works out I'll put that in my chest rig and replace the smaller .690, 1oz pellet slug,36grn Longshot, piston light skeet wad, roll crimp in a 2 3/4" hull (another proven go to).

Being able to one hand before reloads is huge, makes a (soft/3A) shield workable (racking a pump off a shield isn't great, you're set-up for jams and you need a bumper customized to grab with your slide assembly) without a buddy, actually usable for home defense. How does the recoil feel one handing a TAC-14 though? A fullsize 590A1 with a raptor grip isn't bad, actual shockwaves are 2-3 pounds lighter, a tac is about the same but the gas system timing is a wildcard.... you know what you need to do.

But if we were going to war, it would be a rifle, all the way. My first time seeing your video, pretty good, guys. Had a robbery once, guys dressed up like Burger King employees and were still on the scene. Had it not been for the presence of the shotgun, it could have been ugly for a couple of officers. Well... in SHTF bird load/field load can be made effective but requires a single/double barrel as anything other than a breach loader risks malfunction. Making wax slugs or cut shells from field load is fairly easy and pretty effective essentially making them a makeshift slug. So again they can be made effective in a pinch if that's all you have left.

You can, idk if your specifically talking about magazine fed shotguns too like a Saiga or several other models but we should have addressed it. Magazine based shotguns can have some reliability issues based on ammo and carrying the mags can be hectic when they are 3X larger than an AR mag, still a good potential though.

Probably best to stay incognito to them. Best with cover but some materials don’t pick up well with thermal either. But for small drones I would say (using Ukraine conflict as example) that a shotgun with a heavier shot birdload would take down a small drone.

My shotgun is so heavy I rarely take it anywhere while I lived in the mountains my go to rounds were number 4 buck 27 pellets moving the same as a 22 long rifle at 30 ft all pellets were on a man size target also carried 00 buck and slugs where I think the shotgun was useful was behind the point man moving through heavy brush or jungle if an ambush was sprung by the enemy hiding low to the ground and in heavy cover the shot gunner could fire 3 or 4 rounds of flechets into the enemy and kill or put there eyes out and I watched a girl ring a gong out to 500 yds with slugs like it was nothing.

There is a lot of variables there. And it also depends on range. If it’s just one of those small little personal drones within range, then yes. If it’s some super high altitude, communist Chinese drone, then definitely not.

A shotgun in SHTF is really more suited to a survivalist. I don't think it's the best gun for a Prepper. So, if I live in the country or in a more rural area, I think a shotgun is a great "go-to" gun to do it all. If you are in the urban or suburban area, you need a rifle. But if I'm in the country at my farm, I'm gonna set down the rifle and pick up the shotgun because it's good for most applications.
@thelasthuntsmanoutdoors
@thelasthuntsmanoutdoors 3 ай бұрын
Shotguns are used by military and police in urban settings all the time, the main thing is people constantly think of this line wolf one man army and in that scenario shotguns are extremely limited. But in conjunction with a squad of guys shotguns can be very useful. It’s all being part of a team
