WHY RED 2 | Mark Toia | Shot on RED

"So why do I choose RED? Well, it's pretty logical. It's a camera that's got so much color, depth, and incredible dynamic range that it can't be ignored. And a ton of resolution. And shoots RAW that you can edit and grade in real-time. And not forgetting it's got great frame rates, upwards of 400 fps at different crops. And the added bonus is the new V-RAPTOR sensor has another two stops in the blacks and another stop in the highlights to play with.
RED's 8K RAW file, gives me far more creative options on set and in post, and it's the single one reason why I shoot RED.” -Mark Toia, Director/Cinematographer

Thanks Mark, always an inspiration. Was thinking as a side note, with todays cinema cameras, I don't see any reason why its considered "unartistic" to pull stills from video for photography at this point. Isnt that what we did back in the day anyway? with motorized film rollers and stacks of contact sheets, burst shooting? then pick the best of the best (or the worst if it looks the best?) My friend said "yeah but thats not actual photography" and I don't see why not. if a picture is worth a thousand words, than 120 a second is..... Ive actually shot parties and used a flash with a DLSR while filming them. Always that few frames before or after the "flash" that really captures the essence of the mood. man we live in a great time. by the way, I watched the clip at 9:57 about 20 times. just amazing
@AnandaGarden
@AnandaGarden 2 жыл бұрын
"Not actually photography." Well, gee, I thought photographic art was heart first, brain later, and technology last. The only barrier I can see is that video is shot at slow shutter speeds, so you might not get sharpness where you'd like it.

If I may, Teddy, when one is shooting a moving image at 24, 25 or 30 FPS, often enough there would be a fair amount of motion blur. That is the primary reason for not pulling stills from a video frame. Otherwise there is absolutely no issue, and in my client work we have often extracted frames (usually DPX/EXR/TIFF) and given to the publicity & marketing teams. The still photographers capture images in higher megapixels and with posing specifically for marketing and post in mind, so this is more an exception than a norm

I recently moved from a Blackmagic 6Kpro to a Red Komodo and I have to say, whilst I think the Blackmagic Camera is fantastic, the difference is exactly what Mark is saying here - the RED image is always what I see and so easy to grade - true colours and skin tones are bang on. It just looks beautiful with so much flexibility in post, (which is also why it's Netflix approved). p.s. I've have pulled stills from my video and used it for photography jobs and yes they are beautiful too - perhaps my only slight push back is you do need to wait for boot-up times and occasionally black-shade if circumstances require, but that's more than worth it for anyone who is seeking the best final image. (if anyone is interested I will do a side by side BMPCC4k/BMPCC6kPRO/Canon R5/RED Komodo)

It just works so smoothly in Resolve even on lesser hardware. I wasn't sure if you had to transcode R3D to something else to work with it in Resolve or not.

Beautiful work! I wish FCP could handle Braw files :-( Red is beyond my budget. On the other hand, pre-processing in Resolve is not THAT big a deal. 1:37 Raw is what matters. 8:55 For those who don't know, 'resolution doesn't matter' refers to the perceptual threshold we crossed with HD images: images smaller than HD go soft if you try to blow them up. However, images that are HD or larger can be blown up and mixed and matched with other high resolution images with only a bit of sharpening. 4k and beyond are brilliant and better, but HD is a critical minimum. 9:01 The secret of shooting raw is it's super easy, (even with dual ISO). Love this bit!

As a hobbyist.. who just happens to love all things tech.. I have long preached at least the next level up in resolution, more fps, and RAW.. 16bit if possible. Most people say "most people watch on phones.. HD at best.. you dont even need to shoot 4K" I say.. I am shooting for the future too.. never know when you may need a clip 5, 10, 20 years from now. Why limit myself to 10 year old technology because the majority of people are still stuck on it for reasons outside of my control.. if I have the means and know how to record 16K 16bit+ RAW.. I would. Computers will continually get much more powerful.. already laptops can easily handle 4K RAW and even 8K RAW is not too far of a stretch if you get a loaded laptop for most scenes/clips. Desktop systems with Thunderbolt 4 NVMe RAID setups can easily churn 10s of TBs of data at 40gb/s speeds to the PC.. with PCIE5 systems now available from both Intel and AMD a few grand gets you a machine that can work with 8K RAW quite easily these days. Storage is super cheap relatively speaking.. even if you're shooting a few TBs a day.. on a budget for a commercial or tv show you can easily afford plenty of storage and offload speed especially when you don't need to transcode. Yah.. I don't get why so many like to push the "nobody watches 8K.. barely watch 4K.. at h.265 so you don't need to shoot anything past 4K60 at ProRes 422.. ". F that. I want maximum resolution, fps, RAW dynamic range.. "just in case" and for the future use.
@vivek_v
@vivek_v 2 жыл бұрын
Even if we had 16K screens, there is absolutely no need for it. And that's coming from someone who thinks 4K is often limiting in terms of cropping. 8K the most I would be reasonably willing to go, and what I would use if I had the resources to do so. Any additional improvements would be greatly appreciated in dynamic range and low light performance, NOT additional resolution.
@b3owu1f
@b3owu1f 2 жыл бұрын
@@vivek_v fair Point and I agree. There are steps of Improvement. Definitely more dynamic range and such before resolution. I would love to see a 5k or so camera eith 16 bit or more dynamic range before 8k 10bit for example.

What's annoying is their lock and key of the raw file patent. Would be really nice of them to at a bare minimum lease Red Raw out to other camera manufacturers like Apple does with ProRes so we could have some other options. I understand not wanting to open up the patent completely, it would be nice to let other cameras run Red Raw

I totally understand that this is professional high end cameras that cost a fortune, but i can't deny its moments like these i wish i had enough for something like that. My inner curiosity wonders how the world would look from my point of view through a camera like this, but its intangible at most. Maybe for the better... but i can't help but wonder...
