A mum from Middlesborough has blasted a school for making pupils stand up when a teacher enters the class, labelling the practice as “Victorian” and a “regimented power trip”. However, the school’s headteacher has defended the institution saying it is “getting the basics right” and teaching pupils to respect others. So should children stand for teachers in school and is it an important mark of respect?

It’s not power trip, it’s just showing respect.

We're living in an age that scorns discipline and self control

YES. Kids usually chatter and play and having them stand up it creates an interruption, a "the teacher is in and it's time to do work now" moment.

My god. This headteacher should be in charge of all UK education!

We need someone like her in the USA. Public education here is a free for all where the kids are in charge. It’s a big problem and why nobody wants to teach anymore.

Standing for the teacher in class and for the headteacher at assembly was quite normal at my school back in the 1980s. Discipline has gone out the window in too many schools now.

It is out of respect. Why on earth are the core values in life being turned into something else. Too many kids these days have no boundaries, respect, integrity. It's shocking. Discipline in a good way instills stability and security for children which should start at home but sadly in too many homes this is not the case.

Not sure about now, but we did this in Vietnam when I was a kid. Like many other comments said, it is about respect.

We never did this at my school and...... it was fine. We had the best exam results in the local authority area and I achieved good grades. This kind of stuff is just a power trip done by people who hate children (and are probably just child abusers).

Went to a high school that did this, I never saw it as a sign of respect, I just thought it was annoying and outdated.
