In this video, I review the Sigma 28mm f/1.4 DG HSM ART Lens for Canon EF while using it on my Canon EOS R5 mirrorless camera. I compare it to the Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 Macro and the Canon RF 15-35mm f/2.8L. I share my thoughts as I look though the photos and compare them to the other lenses I currently own. I thought I would document my findings to help other decide which lens to buy. I compare bokeh, sharpness, size and color. A wide angle lens is an essential lens for me as a wedding and portrait photographer, so I want to make sure I have a good one. If you have any questions about these lenses, let me know in the comments or find me on Instagram!

As a senior commercial video shooter I know about lenses so this video was not a big deal to me. But let me tell you about the deep and sincere admiration I have for wedding shooters. You guys are like the stuntmen of media production. Personally I would not touch a project where I did not have full control of the script and the ability to do as many re-takes as necessary. But you guys take on the most important moment in a couples life, live in real time, no rehearsal, no blocking, no lighting tweaks, no re-takes. Makes me nauseous just thinking about it. Respect to Shane and all you brave wedding shooters out there! Cheers from Sweden!

Shane, I absolutely love your videos! You always cover exactly what I want to see in a review and your edited photos are so bright and natural looking! I’m currently really happy with the Tamron 35mm f1.4 SP adapted to RF, a lot of the reviews showed it rivalling the 35L II with the same buttery bokeh whilst being really sharp and contrasty. Still on the heavier side vs something like the RF 35 1.8, but not quite as long or heavy as the Sigma 28! I’m quite new to wedding photography and I started with the Sigma 24-35mm f2 as my wide lens because I wasn’t sure how often I’d need wider than 35, it’s quite a nice option too, but I’ve found for most of the day it stays at 35, so I might be bold at my next shoot and leave the 24-35 at home, keep an ultra wide in my bag for dance floor shots etc and stick with the Tamron 35 1.4. Thanks again, always looking forward to your next videos! PS I can’t WAIT for Sigma to release some native RF lenses! Something like the 35mm f1.2 they make for Sony would be amazing!

Thanks SO much William! Sorry for the slow reply, I took a break from YT for a while. I too am hoping for some RF mount Sigma lenses soon. Or some Canon wide 1.2 lenses. Would love a 35 1.2 or a 24 1.2!

Thanks for different views of perspective many reviewers don’t pay attention to that aspect, but its important for event photography to understand how many people fit in photo frame at common ranges, because you can’t stay too far or too close when shooting some live scenes

I really enjoyed your video, great info on the Sigma 28mm! I find myself using Sigma lenses way more than my Canon's these days. I just photographed a wedding and used the Sigma 24-70mm Art on my R6 and and the Sigma 70-200mm Sport on my 5D Mark IV, yes it was heavy but so worth it. Thanks for the Sigma 28mm review, might be my next lens

Nice review. I love this 28mm lens. It's almost as good as the lens corrected sigma 40mm 1.4. The 2 only EF lenses I have and refuse to sell. I now use rf 28-70mm for weddings.

@@ShaneLongPhotography rf 28-70mm is great. I often used Sigma Ef 28mm 1.4 at f2.0 outside to avoid purple fringing. So f2 on the rf lens was not an issue. It actually has better color rendering and more pop with micro contrast. Sigma has more neutral rendering, which is still great.

Designed for FF but on a apsc camera it is a very good standard lens. So on Nikon you get 42mm FF equivalent and that is great.

What about Sigma 24-35mm f/2.0? it is a bit heavier than 28mm 1.4, but you get versatility. I believe this lens can merge your need for 24mm, 28mm and 35mm.

Amateur hobbyist/non-expert, D810 owner observation: My used copy of this Sigma, cost me $450 at a camera store. It is almost as sharp/contrasty as a 28mm f/1.4E I previously owned but appears to distort a bit less than the more expensive Nikkor.

Good day! I’m currently looking at Sigma 28 1.4, I have 24 1.4, judging by the pictures, 28mm has much less distortion, is that true?
@davidmpoliveira1

A 28mm lens doesn't really stretch the corners of the image, it gives you a very natural wide field of view. 24mm is more like an effect lens, it touches the limit of the ultra-wide angle range. 28 won't give you that, some people even call it boring for that reason. It's a moderate wide angle lens, whereas the 35mm touches the upper limit of the wide angle range. 28 sits right in the middle of the other two lenses.

Can someone help me understand how so much of the room seemed to be in focus at f/1.4? Is that a characteristic of wide angle lenses?
@bojolly3322
@bojolly3322 Жыл бұрын
The short answer is yes. Depth of field is affected by aperture, focal length, and distance to the subject. Because he is farther away and because it is a wide angle lens the depth of field is much larger than say a 50mm half body shot at the same aperture. This is another advantage to wide lenses, being able to let in the most light while still having something in focus. You don't have to be that careful at 1.4 on a 28mm vs a 50 or 85.

Sigma 30mm f1.4 DC HSM is your answer. Super small, Art lens. Excellent quality. Simple. It says it's a crop sensor lens but it covers the full frame on my R8 and R5c. A hidden gem not too many people know about and steer clear of because they think it vinettes heavily. It does not. Paid $200 for this used in mint condition. Best lens for the money I have ever bought. Oh and as a bonus if you have a crop sensor camera, like the r7 or r10, or the C70 which is what I use for video, and pair it with the canon 0.71x speed booster, you now have a 30mm f1.0 full frame equivalent lens. It looks incredible in low light. Almost like night vision and the quality of the shadows is noise free, especially when you use a c70 or r5c that has dual gain iso at 800 and 3200 in clog 2 and 3.

I just looked for more info on this and found a dpreview thread showing heavy vignetting on an R6 in full frame. Later posts indicated that with newer firmware it forces crop mode automatically… so if you’re not seeing the vignetting it seems your camera may be in crop mode and you’re not realizing it.
@JapaneseMonster
@JapaneseMonster 11 ай бұрын
@@timk8258 its not in crop mode. I untwist the lens just slightly and it becomes manual because the contacts are not aligned and it looks great. Vignetting is very minimal.

@@JapaneseMonster LOL. That's some pretty crucial information you left out considering you came on here recommending it for full frame RF cameras.
@JapaneseMonster
@JapaneseMonster 11 ай бұрын
@@timk8258 not really. In video, the camera does not go into crop mode when you attach a super35 rated lense and for photos, I do not mind having manual focus if I am capable of having f/0.99 on a Sigma Art lens that is razor sharp and it cost me $200.
