OH. MY. GOD!!! My husband and I have a Busine story!!!! When we first moved in together, finances were a touchy subject. He was constantly concerned we were spending too much money, we weren't. One day he was looking at recent transactions and he ran to me FUMING about a $203.67 charge for something he said was called "Pa-gahn-yay". He asked what it was and why I spent so much without him knowing. He showed me the transaction and it was written out as Pgne. I looked at him and just started cracking up! He was getting more upset, so I quickly gathered myself and told him "That is the short hand that the electric company uses, it's meant to stand for PG&E. He then started laughing with me and now, 10 years later, we still call it Pa-gahn-yay 😂

Miles I listened this morning on Spotify and simply had to come over to leave a comment about flushing. Not flushing is good for the environment but not in the way you might expect. You're right that water flows through the water cycle so it's not like we're depleting it necessarily, but you're also right we can only consume fresh treated water. That water treatment process (yes at sewage treatment centers!) is extremely energy intensive. So the positive environmental impact is actually about saving energy, not water!!

Another important part of water use, though it mostly pertains to agriculture. A large portion of the water used in California comes from the Colorado river, which actually no longer reaches the ocean in Mexico because the western United States diverts so much of it. There's some really interesting stories and politics surrounding the Colorado river compact, which definitely impacts the environment where the river does and does not run. LA also has some of its own really interesting history with water policy & environmental impact

I’m doing a watershed internship rn and have been trying to understand this stuff so here’s my explanation: You’re both right in a way. When flushed, water goes to a treatment facility to remove things that could be harmful then it’s put back into your waterways, which are often where your toilet and tap water are sourced. So the water does get cycled like Miles said, but to Sarah’s point, it takes energy to clean the poopoo peepee water so we can use it again. So we should be reasonably conservative with it

I work in sustainable building services (can't believe I finally have an expertise here 😂) and this is a great summary. When we monitor water usage as a sustainable measure it's the power intensive of running the water to a system and draining the wastage, treating that water, and running it back into the system. Generally a domestic house uses 200 litres a day

The reason wasting water is bad for the earth is bc water is a finite resource that takes POWER and GAS to move around. Droughts create more needs for the construction of water systems (and more and more elaborate systems as we use more water) and power to process the water. Also water access is not the same everywhere and getting water to harder areas would be simpler if we weren’t focused on getting water over to rich peoples lawns for example.

@@TheShauNanigans I get that. But most people don't realize that alot of times training dentists can be involved in your treatment regardless of who is your primary dentist. Sarah is right about the toilet flushing! Some toilets even have "half flushes" for water conservation. Basically, all the water in your plumbing is purified, treated, potable water, even in your toilet, so it actually IS wasteful and therefore bad for the environment to flush that water down the toilet, just like when you leave the sink running wbile you brush your teeth.

I think the idea is you are using energy to purify and treat the water (also after it is flushed it needs to be cleaned, so before and after). Most energy comes from dirty sources, and even if the energy is collected from clean non-polluting sources, that power could be going to transition other still polluting sources. So you are right it is not being consumed/wasted, but the energy used to clean and maintain that water that is the problem.

Apart from energy waste, wasting water is also bad for nature because loads of creatures live in fresh water... the more water you take out of nature for human use, the fewer water stays in the environment. At the same time, droughts get worse and worse with climate change, so the froggos etc. don't have enough wetlands to live in (amphibian biologist here 😅). The water coming back out of the treatment plant goes straight down the (usually canalised) river into the sea, not back into wetlands.

Thank you! This conversation is painful. If you are using water, it had to come from somewhere. It is highly unlikely it is going back there. A lot of communities don't even let people recycle rain water, which is crazy to me. I don't know if I would say flushing the toilet is necessarily wasting water in the sense that it was used for no reason. Watering a lawn when you live in a desert would be more of a waste, probably. We likely do not need to use as much water as we do when we flush, however. If you can wait to flush, you should. Gallons and gallons of water are used every time we flush. Unfortunately, our house is a rental, and the toilet clogs easily. Otherwise, I would let it mellow more often.

She's totally right about the water. The same resources that cause us to have water bills are being used up anytime you use water, it takes electricity to process waste water, retrieving fresh water depletes the resource in the environment and converting salt water to fresh is too energy intensive to be viable. It genuinely is good for the environment to not waste household water.
